      @tayleya Materials were: black boots that open at the front (I used an old pair of lace up ones), foam flip flops, craft foam, rubber cement, clay, hot glue, baby powder, black spray paint, and silver paint. Supplies/tools: scissors, dremel, something heavy to weight down the boots after glue, hot glue gun, hair dryer and/or iron, and paint brushes. Let me know how you get on, there are some other resources linked in the description that I used to help me when I was doing them. Any other questions just let me know and best of luck!

    My first time coming across this art form….and first thought was “amazing!”…. second thought was “what kind of paint do they use so that the colors don’t bleed into the actual pages of text?”

    • @mcieart
      @mcieart 2 місяці тому

      @@hazeleyedsoul3282 thanks so much! All my books, and the typical way others would do this too, are painted with watercolor. The trick to having it not bleed into the page is making sure that it is tightly clamped/pressed during the painting process and to not use too much water on your brush. I usually dab off my brush on a piece of scrap or a clothe before putting it onto the book to make sure the excess water is out.

    • @mcieart
      @mcieart 5 місяців тому

      I used old boots I already had on hand, but if you don’t have that I would suggest looking at second hand and thrift stores. You want something that comes up over the ankle, mine were lace up boots that I just cut the lacing off and that worked well.

    This is brilliant! I only have one question: isn't it possible that the acrylics expose the paper to mould? My books all seem to have a problem with humility...

    • @mcieart
      @mcieart 5 місяців тому

      I use watercolours when painting my books and haven’t had any mould issues. In reality you aren’t really using much water on the actual pages themselves and I also make sure everything is fully dry before I spray a sealant. But because the book is clamped tight the water when painting doesn’t travel into the page and stays more on the edges

      I use professional grade watercolors and a sealant so as long as it is handled with care and kept out of direct sunlight it should last for a very long time. There are some pretty old books, couple hundred years, that have fore edge paintings still.

    • @mcieart
      @mcieart 7 місяців тому

      This is actually a pretty old art form, it used to be reserved for really special books and you’ll see it on things like old bibles so as long as it’s taken care of it can really last. Because watercolour paint goes into the paper, where I would say acrylic more sits on top, it’s not like there’s really a separate layer on top of the paper to brush away. Of course if you handled it roughly or damaged the paper then it would damage the painting as well. I just uploaded a new Foreedge painting and you can see when I can the pages that I’m rubbing it with my fingers but it still looks the same 😊

    • @mcieart

      Thanks so much! Yes this is done fully in watercolour and then once everything has dried but the book is still pressed closed I spray it with a Winsor and Newton professional fixative/sealant. I still wouldn’t recommend heavy handling of books after they’ve been painted but you can definitely touch and move it without disturbing any of the paint.

      Hi! I’m glad that this video can be in anyway helpful 7 years later. Since it’s been so many years I don’t have every exact answer but hopefully this can help: •Dremel: If I remember correctly I just got one at Harbour Freight for like $8. Nothing fancy and I think I used a bit that was like a rounded point. I did some tests before to see which effect I liked best. •3D filigree effect: if you mean the part on the straps I did that by carving the shape I wanted into some dollar store clay and then filling it with hot glue. Once the glue dried I cleaned off the clay and painted the dried hot glue shape. It was a bit of a pain so you could also try sculpting it directly with air dry clay or similar •Filigree pattern: unfortunately I don’t have one to share but I would suggest looking up some references and trying to copy them. Honestly mine didn’t look as nice up close and a good paint job can hide many mistakes •Foam: I don’t have the exact foam but again I just bought a cheap pack of thin craft foam for the filigree and covering. The green foam is upholstery foam, 1 inch I think, that I glued and then cut back. I wouldn’t recommend this it was way more effort then the outcome was worth and if you went this route I would use way thinner foam •Material list: off the top of my head this is everything I used: old pair of boots, craft foam, upholstery foam, rubber cement, scissors, exacto knife, clay, hot glue gun, black spray paint, various silver paints. I hope this is helpful and if there’s anything else I can answer just ask 😊

    • @kittycatgirl1139
      @kittycatgirl1139 9 місяців тому

      @@mcieart thank you so much! What kind of foam would you recommend then- craft foam? And to get that cool effect- the silver effect do you recall what exact kind of paint you used? Thank you once again for your through response :))

    • @kittycatgirl1139
      @kittycatgirl1139 9 місяців тому

      By the filigree effect I was referring to the toe part of the shoe since it pops out! Does that make sense ?

    • @mcieart
      @mcieart 9 місяців тому

      Hi, yes I would recommend craft foam sheets for carving in the filigree work. If your base shoe doesn’t have the shape you want you could add some upholstery foam under the craft foam sheets but it might not even be needed so I would try seeing how the sheets work first before adding the extra expense. For paint I just went to the craft store and bought 3 different silver and metal effect paints, one as a base, one more antique silver for shadows, and one very bright silver for the highlights. Then when painting I did black spray paint over everything, followed by dry brushing the base silver over top. Then I went in with a detail brush and did the darker and brighter silvers in the areas I felt could use more definition, just on the edges of the filigree and around the fake bolts. And yes, that 3D filigree on the toe was done via a very basic mold: roll out some 99 cent clay, carve the shape I wanted, then fill the carved bit with hot glue. Once it was glued on and painted it looks more professional and not like hot glue haha. Hope that makes sense!

      You definitely should! You can find wooden book presses on Etsy if you search but honestly I would suggest that when starting off buy some clamps from the hardware store and and using those with some thin wood or something similar in either side to help hold the book flat. • @mcieart
      @mcieart 10 місяців тому

      Honestly I’m not picky, for most of my books I only end up using 2 or 3 for the whole thing. Usually the bigger one to help hold more paint and do larger areas of single color and then a very small pointed one for detail. Some of these are actual watercolor brushes but I often just grab whatever I have to hand that happens to be clean.
