Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970. It continues to be celebrated annually on April 22 and has even gone global! A huge catalyst for Earth Day, Rachel Carson was a marine biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She was increasingly concerned with the damage humans were causing to the Earth’s fragile ecosystems. Her work raised awareness and galvanized the environmental movement. After a particularly horrible oil spill in California in 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson was worried that politicians were not addressing environmental issues. Inspired by the grassroots organizing of the Vietnam War protests and demonstrations, Senator Nelson created Earth Day to promote conservation awareness and involvement. About 20 million people showed their support at the first Earth Day event. In 1990, Earth Day went global. The demonstration that year saw support from 200 million people in 141 countries!
