Переглядів 3205 місяців тому
Italy's right-wing government is nearing the end of the parliamentary year a time when Italian coalitions all too often fall apart. What are Giorgia Meloni's chances of survival? And why are she and her Brothers of Italy party fascinated by Hobbits and the threat of The Nothing? Morgan Fiumi discusses this and much else with The Economist's celebrated Italy correspondent, John Hooper.

Lorenzo Bartolini and the Truth of Nature
Ahh...fascinating....ahh.
after reading Iris Origo memoir it struck me her vailed disdain for the foreign coterie circle in Florence, some of whom buy and sell Italian art out of the country, making money out of money like a Jewish banker
Thank you, very interesting and informative..
Thank you for this highly informative, and thorough explanation of the construction of Il Duomo. After two visits to Florence over the past two years, I too have become interested in the construction. I am so grateful to know there are others like me who find this topic so fascinating. Again, thank you for all your hard work, sir.
Thank you, so interesting. Thanks again.
Brunelleschi and an altarpiece in Pistoia? And an anecdote. The late Walter Kaiser once met a powerful, wealthy visitor to Florence and asked her what she had thought of the Baptistery Doors. She was disappointed. They were closed.
Bravo, many thanks!!!!! GREAT series on sculpture!!!!! I have listened to it at least 3x!
Thank you for sharing this great talk, a very informative presentation of beautiful artworks; I was especially interested in the historical context & details of material production. I hope North Gates and Gates of Paradise also get covered in the future. As for the question regarding the significance of the reliefs on the altars, while the Ghiberti one features antique-style floral decoration and it is certainly possible to argue that no "meaning or significance" was intended and that is was "an aesthetic little flourish", the Brunelleschi one shows a mysterious figural scene. Amy Bloch's great book on the Gates of Paradise gives a fascinating account of the intricacies of this, and lists several scholars' opinions on it. Structurally it looks like an Annunciation, and I would bet that a range of meanings were intended: the Florentines began their year on March 25 - the feast of the Annunciation - and both events feature divine intervention mediated by an angel, while typological thinking connected Isaac to Jesus.
Outstanding!
Wonderful. It all makes sense now. Thank you.
Found the sound. Truly excellent. Compulsory viewing.
Looked fascinating. No sound?
Had to stop watching/listening; the sound was atrocious, impossible to listen easily. Why is material of such very low quality posted on line?

The fake "Michelnagelo" presented at 44:33 literally resembles some drawings in esteemed British collections. On the other hand, it might not stand a chance when compared with authentic Michelangelo drawings in the Louvre, Albertina, Teylers, especially those with his own hand writings.
Talking of the Jewish doctors, as a surname Medici probably indicates former profession (medical doctor) Medici being plural form of Medico.
What a fascinating talk thank you

Excellent talk thank you
Very interesting, my fam is ghibelline and fascinating to find more history italy. They ruled much of northern Italy for sev hundred years. King of Spain was very threatened by them. A lot has to do with the templars. And the 1307 arrest in france. Yet in Italy ghibellines were pro templar. So in my opinion according to our history this is the root cause of war between the Guelphs. The ghibellines were about preserving the sacred royal bloodlines of the empire, and the Guelph were pro pope, hence the constant war between the 2. Btw, Nobility comes from the oneness of state and church, so people who became certain bishops were also the princes. These same ecclesiastical bishops were the ones who crowned the emperors with the iron crown of Lombardy. And this is the only crown of Italian royalty. So the power to crown emperors is very threatening to the pope which was in france at the time. Our fam was exiled from Brescia an went to Milan under the protection of the visconte that ruled there. Because of this the emperor sent an army to Brescia a few years later to massacre the Guelphs. Idk how many know that the pope's were jus puppets of the medici bankers. I'm not defending elitism yet royal blood is very sacred thing. And is ancient with magic. I understand there's a misuse of the term Nobility and im learning a lot from your video and your accent is lovely❤. Ciao ciao🇮🇹💯💎
I discovered more precious gems of Florence from the lecture.I would love to see miraculous painting of The Annunciation in the church of Ss.Annunziata...
I’m confused what’s the name of this song?
Such ethereal beauty in situ transcends its art - the beauty is the faith experienced by virtue of its art - and the paradox lives. Thank you for the careful reconstructions herein.💐
Thank you for the info for my studies
Could we - possibly - consider thinking for ourselves as unique human beings - and stop - automatically - saying, to every question, "That's a great question." Can we not stay consciously awake?
When you finished I was out of breath! You’ve nailed the whole situation. Vasari was a second rate painter who hung his hat on “The Lives “. But your correlation of the frescoes with the Medici is brilliant. I’ve stayed with you through a plate of baked penne and salad , and did not miss a word. Great job and work. Can’t say enough. Thank you.
Reassured that I could skip stories phew
Engaging lecture! So fun to watch. Thank you.
Infamy! Either you are plagiarising John Andrews, or vice-versa. Entire sections are word-for-word. Whose lecture is this, really? - ua-cam.com/video/ftguObB7R90/v-deo.html
He's so funny!! I feel like so many jokes went over his students head 😭 he deserved a better crowd!! Jokes aside, very informative while still easy to listen to, very much appreciate the great content! ❤ thank you for posting this!
Bravo!
LOVE this!
Just got back from Florence and a walk up inside the Duomo. Bought a book in the gift shop (“Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Roberto Corazzi”) and now I’m obsessed. I have Ross’s book in my Amazon cart, and I stumbled across this lecture here. Fascinating. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion. 🙏
Really enjoy and appreciate the lectures by this gentleman. I hope you had a lovely wine-tasting trip!

Florence is Jewish influenced
Not our people goinm
Florence embraced the Jews yes
So is Florence a Jew stronghold
Very muddled presentation, he obviously has exceptional knowledge but lacks the skill to impart it in an organised and interesting way.
Very interesting and revealing. An excellent selection.
Fabulous presentation! Bravo!
18 mins in and all i see is an extremely biased view against Cosimo, his mother and religion. So a Catholic guy cant ride a horse and have other interests? Plus all the info so far can easily be found online. Has this guy ever interacted with a religious person? I guess he thinks we are all praying all day and witch hunting at night or something 😂
Please do something about improving the audio on these recordings. I can't even listen to this one it's so bad. Such a shame for the lecture 'sounds' like a very interesting one..
Excellent presentation on an interesting topic. Thank you for being so respectful about Catholicism. It's very much appreciated.
Thanks verymuch💐♥️
Thoroughly enjoyed this excellent talk thank you.
