    Sam, I started turning around 2005, about two years before I retired. I am self taught, because there are only a few turners in my area. I can't remember when I discovered your channel, but it has been a big help to me as I have made the journey to be a turner. I watch both your channels because I have learned you are never to old to learn new things. I appreciate the time you put in to make your videos for me to watch. I realize they require a lot of work on your part and I thank you.

    Do we know what the solution actually is? Seems like there is not enough of it compared to how much of the metal reactive paint that comes in the lit?

    Very interesting Sam. It's a little difficult to visualize the end result as you are applying the different colors though. I wasn't to sure about the whole process. However the still shots of the vase at the end is very nice. It certainly did dress up the plain wood. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2025 and stay safe.🙂🙂

    Thanks for this video! I was gifted to be able to take down a beautiful full Box Elder with gorgeous flame in parts but I am a newbie and have it mostly in huge limbs because I cannot for the life of me decide where to make my cuts! For every reason to go one way I think there could be reason to go another! Doesn't help that my curent lil 10" Beaver Rockwell doesnt give me much size options so do I wait on the whole think and let it keep drying until I can get a better Lathe? Perhaps my indecisiveness is a good thing?? I know it will dry painfully slowly in this large size but at least its only possibly getting better (dryer) and not worse the longer I wait right?

    Sam, feel free to do more videos on milling blanks. My favorite videos from your 4-ways partner Richard Raffan are his blank processing ones where he shows how get the most value from your wood.

  • @glencrandall7051

    Thanks Sam. I believe videos like this are much more important than those showing the turning. You pointed out several times here that improper milling of the log / block can result is wasting the prettiest parts. You have shown that these first steps are the critical steps in creating a beautiful turning. Thank you so much for this information. Have a great new year and stay safe.🙂🙂

    I was just given a bunch of wet cherry crotch wood and it needs to be processed quickly for storage. I was doubtful about cutting it up and here you come with just advice I need. I haven’t even watched the video yet but I had to pause and say THANK YOU SAM! 😊 I watched the video. Actually, I was hoping for more on the way to determine where the grain figure was best found inside the crotch or log and how to orient the chainsaw and then the bandsaw cuts. Maybe you could revisit this one day. It would not have occurred to me to use the feather as the side to a hollow form so thank you for that new idea! Happy turning.

    A scraper leaves a great finish and is the easiest way to smooth out ridges or gradually remove bulk without going too far.

    I enjoyed your discussion on the spindle roughing gouge. I seldom miss viewing the videos you post on both your channels. How was the tool rest positioned? Was the tool rest slightly below the headstock center point? At what angle was the gouge positioned horizontally when addressing the wood?

    • @samangeloturns
      @samangeloturns 24 дні тому

      That is a very good question. I think it depends on the diameter of the wood, your comfort as a Turner, which I think is very important. A lot of times using this tool you are not able to rub the bevel so you have to find a position where it cuts well. But I think holding the tool at about a 45° angle is a good place to start and I think the Tool rest should be a little below center so the cutting edge is right at center. Sam
