T1N Sprinter Series - 16 - Pioneer Single DIN Stereo Installation

Typically, the stock radio and speakers in these vans are terrible. I made modest upgrades to them and, while they still aren't the best, I can still enjoy relatively loud music while driving and make bluetooth phone calls easily. The Pioneer head unit was $90, the wiring harness was $12, and the speakers I used (in a different video in this series) were $25. I forgot to post this video a while...

Mid-way through, there's about 20 minutes of just me talking while the engine warms up. I won't be offended if you skip past that :-) I've driven about 2K miles since this repair and no additional carbon is leaking out of the injector ...

Hopefully a couple of weeks of dry weather will come soon and I can take care of this the right way.

    Wow. Well done what a massive job. I just changed out my T1n wiring harness, and I can say finding one in decent condition now they aren't being make any longer is like gold dust. I will keep my old one as its repairable, but note that my Sprinter previously had a mild case of Black Death in one injector, which caused all the wiring covers to disintegrate and that led to the engine stalling at highway speeds on 2 occasions from electrical shorts. Very scary. I highly recommend checking under the top cover regularly and recognise that sound of the engine 'tick' at the start of this video. Let's call this video a classic 'cautionary tale'.

    PS In relation to the reliability of diesel fuel injectors. As stated the 2009 Ford focus estate 1500 diesel has done 218,000 without the injectors being replaced. My other car a 2012 Ford focus C-max 1600 with a different clamping system holding down the injector just like your sprinter is currently at 62,000 miles and I am now in the process of replacing a fourth injector. I have in other places read that others have been having this problem but Ford does not accept that there is an issue with injectors for the particular model at its year. Thank you again for the video and if people are impatient looking at it they can slide along the play stripe to move on the video and soon find where you resolved the problem.

  • @SuttonCourtenay
    @SuttonCourtenay 5 місяців тому

    Great account in real time of your struggle the black stuff and being able to overcome the issue with one injector. Seeing the original state you would not credit that one leaking injector could be responsible. I had the same issue 7 years ago with one injector. I started to smell what I thought was exhaust fumes and thought it was where I was going in traffic and being a diesel I didn't hear the puffing noise till I opened the bonnet to do other work on the car. Only when I removed the top cover could I see the black crud aound one injector. I cleaned just like yourself but could not get the injector to budge. If I had seen your video it would have given me the confidence to persist. As it was a call out mechanic came to my home and did exactly as you did running the engine, getting it hot and eventually by twisting it was removed. After her left, I replaced the seals on the other three injectors.The car had done about 150,000 miles when this happened and now at 218,000 without ever having to change the injectors. A 2009 Ford focus estate diesel 1500

    Great video & Well done, I hope you were very pleased with yourself for fixing it & gave yourself a huge pat on the back. I had the same issue on a 2002 sprinter but it was the injector right at the back.😱 I paid £500 to have it cleaned repaired as I simply wouldn't have been able to do it myself. The mechanic who did the work damaged the rocker cover & I had to buy a salvaged replacement for £85. I had other injector problems a few months after this & a couple of copper washer issues occured. I had a trained Mercedes mechanic work on these & he resolved all the injector issues. The black death is so common on these engines. Ignore the negative comments, there are far too many dickheads on UA-cam!!!!

    Three words: Gel Paint Remover (not the California-safe kind if you can get it). Keep piling it on and it dissolves the build up, wipe away with throw-away paper towels and repeat. The solvents captured in the gel do evaporate, so you want to keep piling it on; you can slow this by covering it with clear cling wrap. You HAVE to wear gloves, eye protection and long sleeves when you're working with this stuff. Learned about it years ago to de-coke pistons in rare vintage Euro motorcycles when tracing down cracks during cylinder head & piston inspections , and it's used to de-coke the power valves in two stroke dirt bikes as well as cleaning piston lands/rings without the scratching the surface treatment off. Neat thing is, if you let it do it's chemical thing and keep wiping away the goo and re-applying, you can see the original machining/casting in the surface, Keep the lid on the can, I use spray can plastic lids and plumbing metal acid flux brushes to apply the stuff and pour out as needed. Once you got down to the exposed injector hold down plates you could have just poured this stuff on from the can and let it sit. Next time, right? 😀 You stuck with it, I love watching people work through problems, using what they have and what they know so far- that's how we learn and get better, having problems, we don't even remember the easy jobs! Watching 20 minutes and I kept cringing at all the carbon block accretion you have going on there (it is indeed the worst I have seen from just one injector!)

    • @DromaticGnome

      Totally valid question. No time. No money. No confidence. The van was given to me from a family member with a lot of issues. I did what I needed to make it safe for a cross-country trip and then made the journey with my fingers crossed and a bag of tools (2,800 miles in limp mode). Once I reached California, it ended up as my daily driver and I was only able to make minor repairs when I wasn't down for more than a day or so with it. I just kept driving it everywhere and it stayed running strong and I was afraid to look under that cover. Eventually, a new noise started happening and then I got it home and started the work in this video that very night. My hope is that there's no other residual damage from running for so long with that leak. I guess I'll find out eventually...
