Bargain Bin Bros Episode 1: Rhythm Roulette With A Twist Featuring Ryan Fresh
@RyanFreshhh (who is dope, go follow him) had an idea to buy 99 cent records for each other and then flip em for a fun double feature UA-cam project. This is a long video because I wanted to challenge myself to only use vinyl samples and didn't want to hide the struggles and many hours involved in the creative process. If anyone wants the stems or the drum kit from this project holler at me, we would love to get more producers involved and hear what others could cook outta this! Link for Ryans video below.

Serato or Traktor? Why not both?
Переглядів 1638 місяців тому
A weird hybrid I figured out when I couldn't get an all in one Lofi, portable beat/scratch rig setup in Traktor alone. This rig has all the functions of a 4 channel controller, a live beat sequencer and and portable turntable that can play actual 12" vinyl in a very lightweight kit with a compact footprint.

Yoooo this is hella sick. Gotta do another one

I agree i wish i could use a mouse as well. For now i would recommend a stylist pen
Right? They can get us stem separation but not a mouse? That's a good suggestion tho ill have to look for a fine point stylus.

Dude, I know this video is old (but amazing). Your setup is ridiculous, my OCD is flaring up. Let’s see, I’m tired of producing music, I think I’ll put the car on the lift and weld the frame for awhile. All with walking less than ten steps! Tell me you have a kegerator and an 80” TV right behind you!
I appreciate the kind words brother! That lab was an amazing workspace and I miss it sometimes but I found I needed to separate out my passions and found a new compound that lets me focus a bit more but still be only a few steps from the studio to the shop. A couple times a year I would convert that space with a 100" screen projector, set up a ton of retro video games, dynamic uplighting and all the speakers but it just got to be too much work.
Yes , an honest review , i just got mine for the mpc one ,and ill tell ya i fkin hate em , they’re exactly the same as the stock ones , the guy who i bought this one from had thick clear pads on , i immediately took those off, put the stock on cause it was so blinding ,i bought the fat pads for the mpc 1000 and THOSE feel like the original Akai mpc 60, 2500 2000 its a feeling not too soft but not dead ass stiff like this smh ,I’m probably gonna do a review and completely trash this purchase ,good review though bro !!
I will say over many months of use they softened up a little bit... But the consistency/accuracy of my velocity sensitivity has never been better than stock since the swap and I feel strongly if I had taken their advice and used two sets of "Corx" (the vinyl stickers you put on the actual trigger sheet) it would be even worse. What I have come to believe is if they are recommending you use "Corx" for your application, what they are really saying is "We didn't actually engineer this product right for your rig, so pay us extra for our band aid that may or may not help."
@@alchemix206I didn't see the corx available for the ONE I get what your saying about months of wear and tear , but the pad replacement thick pads for the 1000 were perfect right from the install , I just got my 1000 out the garage so I'm gonna do a review of these pads stay tuned haha
@@alchemix206also yes using two sets of corx ? Omg that would be insane hahahha
I just found this video. I was wondering if you thought if the Omni was a good turntable to learn scratching on?
The Omni is great for scratching, however if you do not own a full size turntable already I would start there. It will be cheaper and more versatile to find a used hanpin (modern technics clone) and simple mixer if you got the space for it. The Omni is awesome after you learn the basics and start collecting records as you can preview vinyl in store and refine fader technique without having to use multiple pieces of gear.

What exact exhaust header did u use? And do u have a CEL on? Or did u do a custom tune
It's a Miata header, I only have an upstream O2 sensor right now so I do have a CEL for downstream 02 but that one is mostly just for emissions. Just the stock tune currently.
@@alchemix206 im doing the same swap. Im looking for all the info i can find
@@Davincisgarage Sorry I'm slow to respond here. Hope it's going well. The one major issue I ran into was there were two connectors on the harness I had that fit the CPS and I first had it plugged into the wrong one.
Hi really good video Hey question for you Both bearings have the same diameter I'm looking for one of them and they tell me it's discontinued So if is same diameter I can buy 2 Hope you answer me Thank you 🙏
Yeah I think the distributor is confused. For the manual trans both bearings were the same but it definitely seems the input is the one that tears up fastest.
@@alchemix206 thank you 🙏
I'm renting one of these things before deciding if I want to buy it. I appreciate you mentioning the factory reset because now that I've done it, it's nice to know that the rental unit doesn't have a bunch of stuff messed with. For other people doing the reset, you should probably just look up the manual, but you need to press the "START/STOP" button once it turns on. Then once it says "ok" reboot it again.
Glad it helped! One of my students has one of these, still such a versatile and heavy duty rig in my opinion.
Just came across this video as I picked up a 93 B2200 a little while ago, and I'm looking into swaps, the FE3 seems to be the way I want to go, but my question is, was the engine mounts a straight bolt up? And did you reuse the same 5 speed trans that came with the truck? Thanks a ton man, I hope you still have this beauty.
So far you are the only one to combine the two. I have a Numark Ns7 and a Traktor Kontrol F1 , I want to know how did you go about combining the 2 softwares, i want to use the F1 to punch in different vocals on a free channel strip of my NS7 III. Can you offer me some guidance? 🙏🏾
It's way more simple than I was trying to make it at first. Serato is using the midi out with the AMX or in your case the NS7 (excellent controller by the way, I believe the new skratch attach device might let you play 45s on that rig). So I set Traktor to send out the laptops aux/headphones port and then used an aux to rca cable to line it into the spare channel on my mixer.
You have to set the latency to 0 it comes set at 5
Dude get to the damned review already.
Need to ask does anyone have any links as to how you get scratch samples on 7inch records. Ie which suppliers/sites can I buy these from? Love scratching this looks so cool 🎉
Mega DJ Center, Open Format, Jesse Dean, Mile High DJ Supply to name a few
excuse my question but in terms of feeling, why do you think is better using DVS Control tone than HID mode?
It is minor and hard to describe for me,... but HID control feels just a bit more like a controller with conductive jogwheels to me and DVS timecode just feels a little bit more like real vinyl. Both are fine, I just prefer a more classic vinyl feel.
@@alchemix206 thanks fot the reply. But still dont get it. How can a rane twelve (motorished turntable) feel like a conductive jogwheel if you don´t use DVS mode? 🤔
@@djatuncontomate I felt the same way about my CDJs when I used them HID in Serato. Something about connecting them to software reduced their measurable dexterity compared to how the jogs felt in standalone (possibly the extra latency?). I can also hook up my Omni one wire DVS and don't prefer it, I also did not like the first Phase that lacked RCA time signals as well. This is barely noticeable for most but I've seen other DJs demonstrate their ability to "scribble" (I believe it was Cleveland Terry) faster using timecode signals on here. Just a minimal difference and possibly not even very noticeable if you don't come from an analog vinyl background, but definitely an issue I've heard others voice as well.
If you come from a technic 1200 background, then get it. If you have tiny girlie hands, then get a pioneer controller..lol
I still love my Rane 12 and was really hoping my boys at Skratch Attach would drop a modular tone arm add on for it so I don't have to sell a kidney for a CRSS 12... But it doesn't seem like that's gonna become a reality for me. : (
Thanks for the extensive review on the rev1. I will run it through an external mixer for small gigs.
It's awesome for a small battle style controller. I'd like to try out the Rev 5 as well but all my money is getting saved for CRSS 12s.
@@alchemix206 Nice. I just picked it up with a case and will run it through an external to run some QSC K.2 12s.
The rev 1 can pretty much do anything . I can pull mashup and mixes really easy. It's incredible piece of equipment for under 300. It's ridiculous
Super great balance on this rig.
Why did you like it more than the Rev1, other than the pitch faders???
Overall build, form and function felt better on the Numark.
Finally a proper Djs deejay review , fck the specs ... U the only one talking bout usability in real settings.
Thanks man! I try and keep it real.
Great video.. How is the torque compared to the others , i.e., Omni and relooo...who has the best toque, of the portables out there?
I believe they are all pretty much the exact same motors and belts. Omni came with an aluminum platter for most of the others I believe that's an upgrade. But once modded with any aluminum platter I think they would all feel pretty similar, its super adequate for 7" vinyl.
Just a quick question! I came across a steal deal on 2 Decks but they mk1 For 800$ for both! Should i jump on them or they are worth nothing and Just get the mk2 for double?
in my opinion id rather have the mkiis. I've had to use midi cable DVS in certain situations but prefer an actual timecode being transmitted.
How can i hook it up to some old home theater speakers? They have the traditional red and black speaker inputs. HELP! & I want to add in my subwoofer as well
Any old wired speakers should require a "head unit" to send the signal out to the speakers. This head unit should have RCA inputs that can be sent out from the controller. A decent head unit will have outputs for left, right and a subwoofer that should be able to be hooked up with standard stereo wire. Check out local thrift stores for killer deals on decent head units.
Dose the Djj200 play music via Bluetooth speaker?
It can but really its more for just playing a prerecorded mix or auto mix. There is significant latency with almost all bluetooth tech and were only now seeing some companies release pro audio devices that have addressed this issue.
@@alchemix206 oh, alright good to know... a d I'm glad to know someone's doing Something about
@@alchemix206 it
Like your video and I think you hit the all right spots, have you notice the ground or hummm noise when you plug the USB coming from your laptop if your master lever is set to 3 o’clock? Doing some research I got told that that noise is ‘cause because there is no external power supply?
I did notice the sound card was definitely "entry level". I have a DDJ SR that is also midi powered and it does not humm at 0 or + DBs. I did end up switching out the REV1 for a Mixtrack Platinum FX and the sound was noticeably better on that rig (also midi powered).
See this is no way portable bro can’t just go chill at the skatepark and cut it up.Correction bad comment I thought wrong
The Omni itself has built in faders and is exactly as portable as a Numark, the best part is the one button fader/Volume swap since I do like to cut right and left handed. But I do prefer the more full featured experience and would not hesitate to take a stand to the skatepark and mix this way.
@@alchemix206 I never seen an Omni I’m too broke really but ngl I always thought like a Omni was a more serious piece I’ve never came across one I see what your saying I’m just not too versed at all, everyone I see online is usually in a setup similar to yours I honestly didn’t think they were like throw in backpacks and got out it up anywhere? So u can use that just analog?
@@RobertKrafty Yeah I was expecting a metal case and was a bit disappointed it was plastic, but its definitely a big step up from base portables. It's the only one that does not come with a plastic tone arm. Fully analog and has an Audio Technica cartridge that is way nicer than the standard needles on the rest. The big selling point is the onboard DVS interface so you can connect with one cable to Serato or Traktor which is probably why most people display that, but as an analog rig to just rock 7" records its a Cadillac of a portable. Like you said fully pimped out a Numark or Reloop can be hooked up just as nice but will usually run about $100-150 more than it takes to really max out an Omni.
hey man i'm also looking for a good "portable" dvs turntable system as well. so far, what's your experience between the omni, the stx (or other brand) regarding mixing ?
I never managed to get a second working portable in the mix. I bought an STX but it arrived with a broken tonearm spindle and had a few other issues I didn't like so it wen't back. Almost all these tables use the same motors I believe and where DVS on most modern 12" tables flutters about .3 BPM These can be between .5 to 1 full BPM. For the quick mixing I do as an open format DJ it really does not bother me too much as I'm usually doing the second deck internally or on a CDJ. I do worry if I had a second portable it might be harder to keep things aligned. All in all, I LOVE this Omni and have used it in place of a full turntable at many full 4 hour plus gigs without any major complaints. Would consider getting a second one but currently deciding if I should donate a kidney to start saving up for a CRSS12.
@@alchemix206 thank you for such a detailed comment 🙏 yes these crss12 look very very good but not portable lol.
@@iamandynewton The closest competitor to the Omni and much easier to get ahold of would be the Reloop Spin. My buddy has one and has been really happy with it.
STX
I went the pt o1 route suites me fine their all upgraded now
This company is sitting on a diamond in the rough, if only they would step up the build quality.
I agree, there is tons of potential with the concept/layout and I was definitely hoping they would have dropped a "Pro" model or something by now. I pulled it out more recently and was reminded how insanely horrible the touch screen is. Three taps on average to navigate anywhere and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to pressure or duration that makes it more consistent.
@@alchemix206 I would love to buy the company from them and create firmer spongier Version 2 build. Most reviewers are critical of the build. I have as yet to order mine.
They could achieve 1200 if they built a XL model that’s top notch quality like how Arturia keyboards are built.
Great video about this deck
Thanks man! Definitely would still recommend.
Thanks I know this is one year old, and there probably been a few updates. But I can't see this kit not being good for me, as I have not much skill in music theory. I'm using scaler atm, and it's pretty cool. velocity sensitivity is very important. And I'm not sure about the pads. I'm really glad I saw your video. As you covered all the points I was interested in. Tbh I think I'll wait till Akai or Native get something out on these lines, as the build quality will probably be better. And bugfixes/updates will probably get resolved quicker. Unlike other niche companies that bring out the important bugfixes with the new improved MK2 unit. Thanks 👍
There is another product called "Chord Bot" or something like that, that you may like better. I would have hoped for a cheaper MKii model of this Theory Board by now.
Bro, I thought that T355 had a stick of dynamite in it 😬
It gets so bad you can't even go on the freeway.
@alchemix206 I know the feeling. I am about to put both the input and the main shaft bearings into a 2010 Jeep Patriot.
@@MrWoodMan23 Good Luck brother!
As an mpc live user, what benefit are you getting versus pad perform? Other than strumming, which id love to have in the mpc but i end up using the humanize function.
Primarily just training wheels for exotic scales, I really only pull this out when I am programming an instrument I'm less familiar with or for inspiration while making a melody. Honestly even the strum features on this thing are very limited and not super impressive.
I just got mines yesterday mines has the bow in the middle too deff from the touch screen … wish didn’t have that
The touch screen is still one of the worst features. I used it not too long ago and was reminded how clunky and slow the touch screen is, usually takes 3-4 taps to switch menus. the main issue I've found with the wrapped case is it causes different velocity responses from individual pads. Still a neat toy... surprised they haven't made an MK2 that addresses these common issues.
Thanks! I ordered off eBay but they came to small? Any way you can provide link of where you ordered yours from? thanks!
I couldn't find the exact link. I know the part number was listed in the comments a few times but I could not find it during a quick check just now. I remember it being a Mopar part and cost about $130 for two new bearings.
Did you customize the tone-arm? If so, which brand are you using?
Yeah the carbon fiber tone arm was a simple and worthwhile mod at about $40. It's a Jesse Dean kit you should not have any trouble finding.
@@alchemix206 Aaah, i see. Thanks.. Yeah, Jesse Dean makes great products
I bought my STX last month. I've been spinning albums for years. Last night, it worked perfectly. Got off work today, turned it on and it will not power on! I did all the troubleshooting le shooting possible. For absolutely no reason, it will not power up! I am extremely disappointed to say the least
Thanks for sharing! That really sucks, sounds like they must have installed an out of spec power supply in that rig. I can definitely say I've only grown to love my Omni more the longer I own it and have used it for way more than just portable scratch sessions, it does work around here.
@Alchemix yeah i almost went with the omni instead. The price was the deciding factor. Stanton dj is sending me a new STX. But still... I have to send it in and wait for a new one. That's 2-4 wks. I didn't purchase it just to send it back and wait 2-4 wks. Bummer. All good. At least Stanton is replacing it for me.

Did you compare it to Xone 23? I’m planning to buy a 2 channel mixer for just mixing with turntables (nothing about scratching), and have read that Xone has the best phono preamps, comparing to others mixers of the same price range
The Xone would be a better all around option than this mixer, especially if you think you might get into mixing and scratching this one had weird crossfader settings I was not very fond of.
I installed the MPC stuff pads and there was no difference at all in sensitivity, with TWO sets of corx! The pads are not any softer than the stock. They are the same density as a silicone spatula. They do look nice. I had to reinstall them a couple times because you have to be very cautious for that censor sheet not to move out of place the least bit, and you have to play around with the screw tension of the PCB board as this will affect the pad response. Once I did all of this it was no different than stock. Disappointing. The best Akai MPC pads I have used are the ones on the MPK mini 3.
Great advice on the PCB board screw tension I hadn't considered that potentially effecting the sensitivity but it makes sense.
Amazing review! thank you for taking the time and making it detailed enough to answer all the questions.

What noise and/or other symptoms were going on before you changed these out? My 2014 Patriot almost sounds like a diesel while idling but is silent when I press the clutch.
Don't take this as a positive diagnosis but your symptoms sound more likely to be the clutch throwout bearing. Input shaft bearings are the opposite, noisy with the clutch out and while moving.
