Last week all the songs in the Top Ten moved up one position. This week the entire Top Five remains the same, which could be good news for the record at number six, Cat Stevens’ remake of “Another Saturday Night”. That listing ties The Cat’s highest charting song with his version of “Morning Has Broken” from 1972. Elton John has his ninth Top Ten record as “The Bitch Is Back” jumps to #7. Of John’s last nine releases only “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” has missed the Top Ten. It stalled at #12. Blue Swede has their second Top Ten as their version of “Never My Love” moves from #13 to #8. They went all the way to number one earlier in 1974 with their remake of “Hooked On A Feeling”. Bad Company takes their first chart listing into the Top Ten as “Can’t Get Enough” is now at #10. Ohio Players from Dayton now have their highest charting record as “Skin Tight” moves to #13 surpassing their “Funky Worm” which peaked at #15. Miracles continue to score big as “Do It Baby” at #16 becomes their biggest record since “Tears Of A Clown” went all the way to number one in 1970. Also doing well is Steppenwolf, who take “Straight Shootin’ Woman” up to #29. It’s their highest charter since “Rock Me” hit the Top Ten in 1969. Bobby Vinton, who hasn’t been in the Top 40 in over two years is back as “My Melody Of Love” jumps thirty-two places to #33. This could be Vinton’s biggest hit in a decade. Songwriter Jim Weatherly has a Top 40 hit on his own as “The Need To Be” sits at #34. Earth, Wind & Fire have their second Top 40 hit with “Devotion” at #35. Raspberries have their fourth Top 40 hit with The Beach Boys-sounding symphonic “Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)” at #36. Kool & The Gang, whose last two records went Top Ten move higher as “Higher Plane” is now at #37. Carl Carlton, who had his first Hot 100 listing in 1968 finally makes the Top 40 with his remake of “Everlasting Love”. Quite the opposite for James Brown who enters the Top 40 for the 43rd (!) time with “Papa Don’t Take No Mess Part I” at #39. Another Swedish group, ABBA, who went Top Ten with “Waterloo” a few months back hit the Top 40 with their follow-up, “Honey Honey”. Hues Corporation keep rockin’. Their “Rock The Boat” hit number one and their “Rockin’ Soul” rocks onto the Hot 100 at #63. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, most well known for their Top Ten recording of “Mr. Bojangles”, has a nice debut at #78 with their remake of “Battle Of New Orleans”, a song written by Jimmy Driftwood back in 1936, and was the number one record of 1959 by Johnny Horton. Also following up a number one record the last time out, George McCrae debuts at #80 with “I Can’t Leave You Alone”. Fancy, who took “Wild Thing” into the Top 20 are back with “Touch Me” at #87. Like Hues Corporation and George McCrae, Paper Lace shoots for two number one records in a row as “The Black-Eyed Boys” is new at #88. Three newcomers debut on the Hot 100 this week...all in a row...Brother To Brother, Carl Douglas and Sammy Johns...at numbers 93, 94 and 95 respectively. And one of those songs will hit number one! The number one album this week was “If You Love Me Let Me Know” by Olivia Newton-John. Next week...Subtracting nothing from nothing equals one. A King hits the Top Ten, a man, who sang a song about that King is back on the chart after a nine year gap and The Godfather Of Comedy Rock makes his Hot 100 debut. Rest In Peace Cissy Houston! You are now singing to The Lord face to face!

Olivia Newton-John scores her first number one song with the ballad “I Honestly Love You”. The song was co-written by Jeff Barry, who also co-wrote “Sugar, Sugar” with Andy Kim, who held down the number one slot last week with “Rock Me Gently”. In a rare chart phenomenon, all the songs in the Top Ten move up one position. If this trend continues, Cheech & Chong will have a number one record in nine weeks! As mentioned, Andy Kim was at number one last week and this week takes a dive to #12. It’s the second week in a row that the number one song dropped to that position. Barry White did the exact same thing with “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe”. Could Olivia follow the trend? The Tymes now have their third highest charting hit as “You Little Trustmaker” moves up to #14. Only “Wonderful! Wonderful!” and “So Much In Love” have charted higher for the group, reaching numbers 7 and 1 respectively. Carole King is back in the Top 20 for the first time in over two years as “Jazzman” is now at #19. Her last Top 20 record was “Sweet Seasons” back in early 1972. The Miracles stretch back even farther as they move to #20 with “Do It Baby”. Their last Top 20 listing was “I Don’t Blame You At All” when Smokey Robinson was the lead singer. That song peaked at #18 in 1971. Bachman-Turner Overdrive have their third Top 40 hit in a row and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” leaps to #28. John Lennon has his seventh Top 40 hit since leaving The Beatles as “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” is at #33 in only its second week on the chart. Elton John provides background vocals for the song. Righteous Brothers continue their comeback as “Give It To The People” become their ninth Top 40 hit. Gordon Lightfoot’s follow-up to his number one “Sundown” enters the Top 40 at #35. Steppenwolf, who haven’t had a Top 40 hit in over four years is back with “Straight Shootin’ Woman” at #36. Brownsville Station collect their second Top 40 mention with “Kings Of The Party” at #39. John Denver continues his streak with his third Top 40 record in a row as “Back Home Again” is up to #40. His last two Top 40 hits both went to #1. Neil Diamond is back with the highest debuting record of the week as “Longfellow Serenade” blasts on at #59. Prelude, a folk trio from England, take a Neil Young song and recorded it a capella style and hit the Hot 100 at #87. Master storyteller Harry Chapin is back on the chart with “Cat’s In The Cradle”, a song that was inspired by a poem written by his wife Sandy and reflects on the distance created by a father and a son during a lifetime. Tavares, a family R&B group from Massachusetts, debuts with “She’s Gone”, a minor hit for Hall & Oates recently. Elvin Bishop, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has his first chart appearance with “Travelin’ Shoes” at #90. Bishop is the former lead guitarist with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Atlanta Rhythm Section from (where else?) Atlanta are also newcomers to the Hot 100. Their first song “Doraville”, named after a northeastern suburb of Atlanta, comes on at #91. Pointer Sisters, known for their retro funky blues style go country with their latest release as “Fairytale” debuts at #92. Last week O.C. Smith debuted at #91 with “La La Peace Song”. This week, Al Wilson’s version is new at #94. Wilson earlier in 1974 went all the way to number one with “Show And Tell”. And the race is on! The number one album this week was “Endless Summer” by Beach Boys. Rest In Peace, Kris Kristofferson. Your songs will never be forgotten!

Andy Kim (real name Andrew Joaquin) has his first number one song as his comeback hit of sorts “Rock Me Gently” tops the chart. Kim becomes the fourth Canadian act in 1974 to hit number one following Terry Jacks, Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Anka. It’s also the third song in that year to start with the word “Rock” after “Rock The Boat” and “Rock Your Baby”. Kim has been in the number one slot before but as a co-writer. His song “Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies became the biggest hit of 1969. British studio group First Class with singer Tony Burrows, who has fronted other studio groups, takes a nice jump from #12 to #5 with the summertime hit “Beach Baby” as autumn kicks in. Cat Stevens’ version of “Another Saturday Night” moves up to #8, surpassing the original recording of the song by Sam Cooke which reached #10 in 1963. Florida band Lynyrd Skynyrd hit the Top Ten for the first time with “Sweet Home Alabama” at #10. Barry White takes a deep drop from #1 to #12 with his “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe”. That’s the steepest fall from the number one position since Simon & Garfunkel did the same thing in 1966 with “The Sounds Of Silence”. Not a great way to get into the record books, but that won’t last long. Capitol Records rereleased The Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and it gives the band their 28th Top 40 hit as it rides the wave to #36. The song originally hit number three in 1963. Country singer Marilyn Sellars takes her first chart appearance into the Top 40 as “One Day At A Time” comes in at #37. John Lennon, whose last chart entry, “Mind Games” made it to #18, has the highest debut of the week as “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” blasts onto the Hot 100 at #53. Earth, Wind & Fire, who have been doing better on the Soul Chart than on the Hot 100 have a nice debut with “Devotion” at #59. So far their biggest pop hit has been “Mighty Mighty” which made it to #29 earlier in the year. Newcomers B.T. Express, a disco group from Brooklyn, dance onto the chart at #60 with “Do It (‘Til You’re Satisfied)”. ABBA’s “Honey Honey” breaks away from Sweet Dreams’ version of the same song as their song moves up to #61 while the latter stays firm at #71. Garfunkel seems to doing the same thing to Tim Moore as his “Second Avenue” takes the lead. However, Moore is the songwriter. The consolation is Moore will get the royalties regardless of who wins with the bigger hit. Jud Strunk, who hit #14 with “Daisy A Day” in 1973, returns to the Hot 100 with the patriotic “My Country” at #81. Smokey Robinson continues his solo career as “Virgin Man” hits at #82. American Soul, R&B, Disco group Ace Spectrum have their first entry with “Don’t Send Nobody Else” at #83. Marvin Gaye, whose last solo appearance, “You Sure Love To Ball” missed the Top 40, takes his live recording of “Distant Lover” to the chart at #85. Charlie Rich once again has two songs on the chart on two different record labels. His “I Love My Friend” on Epic moves up to #25. His “She Called Me Baby” on RCA debuts at #86. Al Green continues his chart hot streak as his latest “Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)” jumps on at #87. Same goes for Three Dog Night, who also haven’t missed, debut with “Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues)” at #89. Pop/Country/Singer/Songwriter and keyboardist Billy Swan has his first chart entry with the roller-skating sound of “I Can Help” at #90. Another battle of the songs is brewing as O.C. Smith, perhaps known by his biggest hit “Little Green Apples”, comes in #91 with “La La Peace Song”. Next week expect another singer to debut with the same song...by a man who reached number one not too long ago. And Three Degrees, who have had one relatively big hit on their own, “Maybe”, which made it to #29 in 1970, but hit number one as background vocalists for MFSB’s “TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)” take the lowest new entry position this week with “When Will I See You Again” at #94. The number one album this week was “Bad Company” by Bad Company. Next week...a woman loves us...honestly. The top ten songs all have something in common. And a soulful family act goes country. Farewell September. Hello October.

Barry White, “The Walrus Of Love”, takes a nice leap from #5 to #1 giving him his first vocalized number one song. This singer/songwriter/record producer/orchestra leader and former Los Angeles gang member went to number one with the instrumental “Love’s Theme” earlier in the year as the conductor of Love Unlimited Orchestra. He is known for spoken introductions and this particular recording was based on a marathon love-making session he had with his wife and he still wanted more intimacy. Don’t you miss the days when someone can sing about passion and not get graphic??? In one big jump, Olivia Newton-John scores her third Top Ten record in a row and highest charter so far as “I Honestly Love You” blasts from #12 to #3. Billy Preston keeps his streak alive as all four of his solo Top 40 hits have now made the Top Four as “Nothing From Nothing” moves up to number four. I wonder if four is Preston’s lucky number. Stevie Wonder has his seventeenth Top Ten hit in eleven years as “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” gains ground to #9. He almost had six Top Ten’s in a row but his last release “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” stalled at #16. Johnny Bristol changes direction and moves up to #10 giving him his first Top Ten record as a singer with “Hang On In There Baby”. Ohio Players from Dayton now have the second highest charting hit of their career as “Skin Tight” slithers up to #27. Only their “Funky Worm” has performed better. That song peaked at #15. Elton John has his twelfth Top 40 listing in less than four years as “The Bitch Is Back” jumps to #30. It’s nine Top 40 records for family group Osmonds as the Johnny Bristol song “Love Me For A Reason” moves up nicely to #37. The Godfather Of Soul, James Brown, continues on with his 43rd Top 40 record as “Papa Don’t Take No Mess Part I” is now at #38. Souther, HIllman, Furay Band take their first Hot 100 charter, “Fallin’ In Love”, into the Top 40 at #39. J.D. Souther passed away this week. This talented singer/songwriter also appears on the chart as a co-writer of the song “James Dean”, which debuts at #92 by Eagles. Teaming up with record producer George Martin has certainly helped the band America as they are back in the Top 40 for the first time since “Don’t Cross The River” inched up to #35 back in early 1973 as “Tin Man” moves from #51 to #40. Mac Davis continues to hang on as his “One Hell Of A Woman” at #45 has now been on the Hot 100 for six months. Bachman-Turner Overdrive has the highest debut of the week with “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” at #65. They are still looking for their first Top 10 record. This could be the one. John Denver shoots for three number one songs in a row as the title track from his number one album, “Back Home Again” has a nice start at #70. It’s back to back for the same song by two different groups. “Honey Honey” first hit the chart by the group Sweet Dreams, but the writers of the song, the two guys from ABBA, with some help with some friends, move up as the records sit at numbers 71 & 72 respectively. And although not back to back, Art Garfunkel debuts at #77 with his rendition of “Second Avenue” while the writer of the song, Tim Moore, also debuts #83. And the battle of the songs begins. Television personalities Hudson Brothers, a trio from Portland, Oregon, have their first chart listing with “So You Are A Star” at #86. Bill Hudson was once married to actress Goldie Hawn and is the biological father of actress Kate Hudson. Carl Carlton, once known as Little Carl Carlton, has been releasing records since 1968. This week he has his third Hot 100 entry with “Everlasting Love”, a remake of the Robert Knight hit, which peaked at #13 in 1967. The Polish Prince, Bobby Vinton, who’s latest song “My Melody Of Love”, which is partially sung in Polish, returns to the chart after a two-year gap at #88. Vinton was the best selling male singles artist of the 1960’s, scoring four number one songs, but he hasn’t reached the Top Ten since 1968. Canadians have been doing very well this year and another newcomer from Canada hits the chart this week. Gino Vannelli from Montreal debuts at #89 with “People Gotta Move”. And the remakes continue as Texas Pop-Country singer/songwriter/guitarist Sam Neely has his third charting record with the old Roy Hamilton recording of “You Can Have Her” at #90. Hamilton took the song to #12 in 1961. The number one album this week was “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” by Stevie Wonder. Next week...another Canadian and another “ROCK” song reach the summit. A British Cat is back in the Top Ten. A comedy duo have their biggest hit. And a former Beatle makes a nice debut. Happy Autumn! 🍁
