Girl you are not alone❤. My dad encouraged me to be a doctor even though I didn’t want to. And afterwards, I wanted to make him happy and I decided to embark on the journey. I have no passion for medicine neither do I like it. But I was passing my exams as discipline > passion when it comes to success most times. There were times I wanted to quit but I look at my dad and realize the amount of money he has invested, I look at myself and look at the time I have invested and in my head I was like… I can’t stop, I have to go on I already started. I forced myself to put in more work and not be a crybaby and while I did that it helped me to get better. While I still don’t have passion yet, I have developed some interest sort of in medicine but it isn’t enough to make me happy with this course. I am in my 5th year now and I’m ok but not all that ok at the same time. I also found out that after graduating yes you keep writing exams and get to do internship, then nysc, then junior registrar and senior and consultants. Series of exams would keep coming and the healthcare system is toxic and can raise anxiety, seeing patients die everyday, standing for over 30+ hrs, and it’s just crazy. The burnout is crazy. I’m just looking back at those days I was in secondary school and all these things, I knew it. I knew what it was that medicine was about and that’s why I never wanted it. But yet I embarked on it because at the end of the day even though I wanted to make my dad happy , it was still my choice.
