However, the second story has a slight twist as the paper train the...

I didn’t meet Bob ‘Ben’ Cartwright until after steam on the Southern had disappeared and I’d become a driver at Woking Mixed Traction depot. Bob would often ride in the cab with me, either when he was going to work or going home as he lived near Alton and at that time was a young driver at Waterloo. We’d chat about most things in general and it was a pleasant way of passing the time between des...

I first met Eric Christian when I joined the Southside Training School as an Acting Instructor in 1987. He would normally be involved in any type of new rolling stock or locomotive that would require driver training mostly on the technical side of how the equipment on them functioned. When the 2-Car 456 Unit was introduced, Eric, Ralph Sullivan, David Timothy and myself took the unit out from S...

I first met Tim in 1965 when he rode on the footplate with my regular driver (Stan Harms) and myself whilst we were working the 6.09pm passenger train from Waterloo to Woking. To me, he always gave the impression that he was a man that you could talk too and expect a civilised answer. Following our first meeting, I always found him kind and considerate and he knew everyone on first name terms. ...

Excellent, my dad and i used guildford station alot in the 1970s and 80s when i was born and bought up in guildford.
I could listen to this narration & story’s all day long, it’s history now long gone.
Loved this video and the next one. My grandad was a lad telegraphist at Upwey and Easton. His dad was a ticket inspector at Weymouth. They would have known these drivers and firemen. William Didcock and his son, William or Bill were their names. William jnr used to ride his bike from Upwey to Portland every day he was rotored into work. This was in the mid 1930’s.
really enjoyed part 1 and part 2. Thanks for putting it all together. Do you have any more pictures of the building of the New Guildford Line?
Glad you enjoyed the video. Sadly I don’t have any further photos of the building of the New Guildford line but noticed today (viewing from Yorkie’s bridge) they are relaying part of the track today.
Great video. I've been trying to find out information about the old Guildford station, for a project I'm working on, and while I have found quite a few good photos on Flickr, you've added quite a few here that I've never seen before, and your commentary what all the things are is very helpful, as I am just about too young to remember the old station (I was born in 82).
Thanks Mark, glad that you've found it useful for your project. Local Historian David Rose and I are conducting a walkabout around Guildford Station and what was the old steam depot (including Yorkie's Bridge) on Sunday 22nd September at 10.00. We have a couple of places left if you're interested?
@@geoffburch7959 That sounds interesting. Where can I find out more information about it?

Thanks Geoff, brought back memories of my school days in Guildford and my interest in railways started.
One of my favourite spotting sites. Cross the street and a good view of the shed.
Excellent work that you have put into your videos buddy, thanks.
Thank you for all your hard work, and congratulations on a wonderful photo collection. And, at 28:15 'at last - a U-boat!' And plenty of 4CORs. I always used to seek them out; they had the best seats. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Great video and history lesson of Guildford station, I have only been there once for a training course in the early noughties
Fantastic footage Geoff loads of happy memories at and passing through Guildford 👍🏻
Thank you so much Geoff for all your time and effort on recording all of your photos and efforts in saving them for prosperity, thanks must also go to all the other friends of yours who gave so unselfishly for your compilations .Was that the first time a Royal scot class had visited Guildford ? Surely it must have been rare back in the day . Thank you again Geoff for such lovely memories.
the photo of Guildford station at about 02:30 wasn't taken in 1967, the vehicles appear to be Later, they are are L and V reg at my guess so they are mid-late 1970s vehicles
I stand corrected Keith - well spotted.
@geoffburch7959 it was obvious to me that the cars looked later than 1960s designs, but hey, we're human......
Thank you Geoff, this long awaited update on everything that happened after I left for Canada is greatly appreciated! Well done! Best wishes, Nick B
1:05 that labour party did some damage to this country, all these closed railways lines and pits ( i hope you haven't voted for them in 2024 )
I think you're thinking of the Tories!
@@andrewwoodgate3769 ahhh bless. the beeching report (he had no power) was basically sat on until 1965. Enter labour who then wholesale slashed the lines, the madness only stopped under heath ( that hurts me to say ) in 1970 Labour all the way and they closed hundreds of pits in that time frame and blair saved none in the 90's. use real facts please not wiki lefty garbage
Excellent series, bring back many memories
Well worth waiting for, as always. Thank you.
My Dad (1936 born) started as a cleaner at Southport then eventually moved to London and then became a fireman at Willesden and few other places… eventually passing out as a driver then moving to Bedford and ended up retiring in 1999…He doesn’t have internet access, and I have just had the pleasure of his company for a week as he now lives near Plymouth… He thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos and absolutely made my day as he was chuckling away to some of your stories. Amazing work! Thank you 😊
Super photos!
Thank you Geoff…….never been to Guildford used to be a hive of activity
Absolutely great set of videos………God bless Dai woodham
Great stories
I have just watched 4 or 5 of these films…………fantastic
That was good money in those days. When I started my apprenticeship at Hawker Siddeley, Kingston, in 1971 my weekly wage was £7.51 rising a little each year but on a fixed scale. Inflation was going mad at the time and because of the fixed scale of wages I was earning less than the first year lads when I had done my 4 years!!!
Spot on Geoff! Thank you 👍
Great video. How you remembered all the rules and regs etc I`ll never know. I loved the journey from Surbiton to Guildford via Cobham, It was a lovely route and I used to do it just for the ride.
Marvellous piece of railway history. Thank you.
Glad to hear your back Geoff. Always happy to hear you and railway stories from the passed thank you always
Love watching these videos of recollections and experiences
These further superb photos and commentary, bring back some happy memories. Thank you.
Thank you Geoff that was a very interesting film. looking forward to part 2.

Geoff Thank You ever so much for doing this wonderful video! 24:20 Looks like Schools V class 933 BR 30933 Kings Canterbury.
Thank you for compiling this, so many memories.
Excellent. Very informative and well-narrated. Thank you very much indeed.
Thanks Geoff, another great collection of Guildford memories....
Great viewing. Many photos never seen before.
Thank you so much for an interesting historical overview.
Thank you. These videos have been fantastic.
I was a secondman at Salisbury, and Fred was a Salisbury man. When we went up for driving(1978), Fred took me for driving( practical) . He knew that as a Salisbury secondman, I'd already done loads of driving, so as for teaching the practical side of things, he just sat there in the chair on the other side of the cab, and let you get on with it.
Thank-you!
Spot on Geoff! None better! Thanks
Delightful stuff Geoff.
Fascinating, and what a wonderful archive you've put together - thanks so much for producing these, Geoff. RIP Derek
I would love to heard more of Derek singing. Shame he’s gone now
Derek is an absolute brilliant singer
I trainspotted at Dorking North in the 70s and early 80s, but only ever got to Effingham Jn one rather unfortunate evening coming home late from work in 1990 very drunk and some random guy offered me a spliff and I had a drag, threw up, and fell asleep. Meaning I didn’t change at either Epsom, Ashtead or Leatherhead. Cue 1am phone call to parents at the phone box by the railway bridge. So I saw it in the dark with a sore head 😂 You probably still knew some of the guys at Dorking though. Fred, Mick, Simon, and manager Mr Dixon. Oh wow!! 6:11 I can still hear that thing!! And the hope it brought of the correct train…..
Guildford locos looked so varied. I grew up coming to Guildford for the cinema in the 70s then school in early/mid 80s (from Dorking), and looking at the long shots and the few that feature the station, it hadn’t changed much from this set. Guildford had the yellow canopy and green painted iron canopy struts the same as Dorking North did, so even though Dorking North was demolished in 1980 it always felt really familiar.
Is this the Dave Salmon that did LOADS of amazing postcards? Somewhere I’ve a postcard of a steam engine powering out of Dorking North toward Horsham from about 1955
Sorry, its not this Dave Salmon. However, I'd like to see the postcards.
