Realy hope someone can help me. When i test a armature commutator i set multimeter to 20M ohms then 1 wire on shaft and other wire on commutator, then get reading. Is this mean there is a short between ground and commutator? When set it on lower ohms i not get any reading. Just when set it on 20M ohms and 200M ohms i get reading.

At 2:23 When he says there is no resistance I think he means there is infinite resistance between windings and ground. Would have been nice to see if there was supposed to be resistance between the separate windings.

Aren't the commutators physically separated? More precisely, as opposed to being connected, and neighbors physically separated? Why is there contact between two neighboring ones?

The winding resistance is low on tge coils but wouldn't it also be low if the coils are shorted inside?
Of course, with a multimeter we can see: 1. whether there is contact with the ground 2. whether the composition of the winding is not interrupted. We can't see with a multimeter if the coil is connected to each other, I'll try to make a video about it soon, thanks for the suggestion....
@@auto018ms That's the problem, if coils are shorted together then the multimeter is probably useless. I have massive spark when I apply power to starter and I checked field coils resistance to the case and the multimeter came back with a high resistance but I believe if I connect battery power to coils and then touch the negative terminal of battery to the case the insultion will probably break down and indeed reveal a short. I think otherwise if I'm to use a meter it would have to be a Megger insultion testing meter. Brute force I feel is my only option if I don't posess a fancy meter like the Megger.

Due to the large section of the winding wire, the resistance is like that of a short circuit. GOOD
So how does one know if the starter armature is bad or shorted if a good armature has such a low resistance
