      I've never tried that, and I think the glass would probably break from the tension caused by the shrinking paper, unless it was very thick

    I’ve watched two of your shorts and already I have learned four great tricks. Using a ruler and a magnifying glass while painting never occurred to me. And even though I use reference photos, I never tried sizing as large as my paintings, since they are never quite that realistic. But from now on I will use all those tricks! Thank you!❤

    I don't understand why you don't paint the background first with negative painting for the birds. Wasn't that remove a lot of these problems

    • @watercolorish
      @watercolorish 26 днів тому

      Hi @@phillipstroll7385, because watercolor paint remains water-soluble even when dry, any area of dense, dark color can potentially contaminate and muddy adjacent lighter areas if they touch while the lighter area is wet. That’s one reason why the watercolor rule of thumb is to work from light to dark. Also the smooth even finish of my dark backgrounds is easily damaged by accidental scratches or scrapes or by the use of masking, so it looks better when I do it last.

    Great tips and I am curious about something not really related to the wash which is why you are using tape on this painting as opposed to butchers tape which you used in some of your other videos? Also - the complexity of your line work is just phenomenal. You have that much light and dark and no running!

    • @watercolorish
      @watercolorish 26 днів тому

      Hi @@Lightcode, I use that brown water-activated kraft tape (also called watercolor tape) only for stretching my watercolor paper. It is not removable without paper damage or adhesive residue, so I cut off the taped edges when a painting is finished. For masking, including along the boundaries of the painted area, I use drafting tape, which looks like masking tape but is less sticky. Hope this is helpful 🙂

    I'm an old-school offset press operator for over four decades, and was just given watercolors as a gift after I expressed an interest in painting, and I'm so happy I looked up "preparing watercolor paper for use" FIRST THING and found this video! The reason I mention offset printing? Humidity is sometimes my enemy, and sometimes my friend! My relative humidity meter that has hung on the wall of the Print Shop is usually the first thing I check if I'm going to run tricksy paper, like extremely lightweight carbonless sheets, during a very dry spell, or and extremely damp spell of indoor weather. And if i'm havving trouble running a particular stock? Check the humidty! Paper can be so picky, and I've ruined some very expensive pre-collated NCR in my time! This is good knowledge, and I thank you!

    Hello and thank you from a new subscriber - the detail, narration and dry sense of humor make these very enjoyable. Like others on here, I had no idea that block paper still needed to be stretched, although certainly I have observed buckling (just didn't realize stretching would solve the problem). I have a question (in case you're reading this). Would this process be effective if the paper was stretched in this manner, removed from the drawing board, and then taped onto another, lighter board? I ask because I like to work on fairly small, light boards, not something heavy like your example. I don't have a great workspace, and tend to work on multiple paintings simultaneously, so I need to compact things as much as possible. Thank you again. Looking forward to viewing many more of these.

    • @watercolorish
      @watercolorish Місяць тому

      When you stretch w/c paper, it remains under tension from drying while attached to the board it was stretched on, which is what prevents buckling. If you remove that tension, then it will ripple and buckle again when wet, even if you tape it down to another board, sorry

    Advice for how to get into a gallery? Sadly I feel like it’s a “who you know” situation. But what is the process typically/traditionally? 🤔

    • @watercolorish
      @watercolorish Місяць тому

      This is a very big subject to address in a comment, but in a nutshell, yes it helps to know people. I was recommended to the galleries I currently show at by an artist friend who used to show there, and she was someone I met through a non-profit community gallery I showed at 20 years ago. So, one piece of advice is to go to gallery openings regularly and meet people, not just to promote your own work but also to cultivate friendships and hear about opportunities from other artists. If you don't live in an area with many art galleries (i.e., not near a major city), you may need to build these relationships online. If you haven't already, put together a coherent body of work, meaning it should be 10 - 15 works that look like the mature output of one artist with a distinctive and consistent style rather than experimental or student work. Create a website and/or social media accounts that show images of your work and provide an artist statement and exhibition history, so you can refer people to it, either by email or by handing them a business card or postcard with your info on it. Some galleries have their submission policy on their About page, and you can check to see if they accept artist submissions and what they want to see if they do. Many galleries don't, because they are bombarded all the time by unsolicited artist submissions, which they will send straight to the trash. If you have never exhibited anywhere, you can start out by entering juried shows in non-profit alternative art spaces -- this is a way to build a track record and start selling your work to people outside your own network. Anyway, I can share more advice on this subject in a future video, if you think that would be helpful. Good luck!

    • @watercolorish
      @watercolorish 4 місяці тому

      I have found the brown kraft tape does not peel off the watercolor paper without leaving a residue. Even if you soak the edges to remove it, there may be some of the adhesive remaining that could yellow over the years, so I think it's best to cut it off. Maybe a larger paper size would be the solution for you...?
