A solo ride on the Steens/Alvord ORBDR-X

Another solo ADV ride, this time on the ORBDR-X on my KLX300R. It wasn't a challenging route, especially on a dirt bike, but the scenery was amazing and the ride was a blast. I started the route from the north end in The Narrows, so the first day for me was Section 2, and I rode Section 1 on the second day. The weather has been pretty warm so Ryland and I got out and rode Pickles Butte OHV near Nampa ID. If you have been looking at a better way to listen to music while riding your motorcycle bone conduction headphones might be the way to go! I talk about my experience using them with my full face helmet, as well as my experience with other options for music while riding. In April/May 2022 I took a trip along California's Lost Coast on my KLR650. Despite poor weather, a crash and minor mechanical issues the ride was amazing. The Lost Coast is beautiful, and the southern section is well worth checking out if you are an overlander or ADV motorcycle rider. Idaho BDR 2021: A Solo Journey

In August of 2021 I rode the Idaho Backcounty Discovery Route, or IDBDR, solo. The route runs along the length of Idaho from the borders of Nevada to Canada. I did the trip on my 2007 KLR650, camping most days. Despite lots of road closures due to fires, and lots of smoke in the air, the ride was amazing. Boise MTB Cottonwood Creek

This is a ride down the Cottonwood Creek trail from top to bottom. Cottonwood creek is one of the trails in Boise's Ridges to Rivers trail system. The trail drops down right by the Boise Bike Park, so I had to take one quick lap.
White Rim Trail April 2021

Riding my KLR 650 around the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park. Canyonlands in right outside of Moab, UT. My last time on the road I only was able to do about half of it, but this time I was able to do the full thing in a single day.
I wanna do this so bad on 18 klr,gotta keep telling my buddy to ride for the week not weekend as he likes to go full on all the time...he crashes alot.

Why won't they plug right into your intercom like the foam plugs did? I don't get what the prob was as you just left it with "Well that won't work". Wasn't mentioned but are those shock things bluetooth only?

Great video, Sir! I got to indulge myself watching you ride all my favorite CA coast roads. You definitely hit the best ones I know of. Willow Creek, Prewitt Ridge, Old Coast, Usal, Mattole, Howland Roads are some real special places. About as good as riding gets in my humble opinion. But it's home so....
I didn't think these routes were possible without a brand new 1200GS and $10k in gear. /s Well done!

I’ve bought cardo with JBL speakers, and same as you cannot hear anything at speed about 85 kph
I have your setup and got three or four experiments, even Bose sound cancelling but they hurt way too much as they are huge, and the best so far are earpeace filtered plugs. they filter out most wind noise and let you hear the Cardo even on the phone, Funny though people I call think I'm at my desk till I tell them I'm on I75 going 70 MPH. ;<)

I met an old man, in great health. 86 and rode all his life. Deaf, though. I rode 5 hours straight without earplugs, all 60 mph plus when i got my new bike. Tinnitus now. Don't be me! Definitely getting me some shox,. Heads up audio nav FTW!

Are you placing the conductors directly onto your earplugs? Many people do not know that the sound conducts perfectly thru foam earplugs

Great video, thanks! In my neck of the woods too. I had that same blown fuse issue this past weekend. I did not have spare, but able to start via starter relay terminals.

The reason I love this video is I rode all of Usal Rd on my Tenere 700 in the rain and it was slick and muddy as shit. Glad someone else went through it too.
That's awesome! I think the road being wet honestly made it a blast. I think I missed some views because of the clouds though. Atleast that's the excuse I'll use to get to go do it again.

The Gen 1 still rips! It's a Trail Tech Vapor. Pretty easy to install and they have a kit for the KLR.
Just saw your review. I tried using the Aftershokz Aeropex but the multifunction button at the left side randomly engages as it’s pushing against the side of the helmet. This keeps stopping and starting music. Wish their was a way of disabling this button then it would be perfect.

Thanks very much for this. I've been considering trying some conduction headsets: this video is very helpful. Hopefully, some manufacturer will produce a pair of these without the solid plastic piece that passes behind and around the back of the head -- replacing it with an elasticated strap or something that would fit even more seamlessly under a helmet. Hmmm... or maybe I could fabricate this myself.
That would be awesome. Hopefully as the technology progresses we will see something like that.

1st Gen KLR is an awesome bike for backroad travel. I love mine. I couldn't tell in the video if you were running a fork brace, but that combined with progressive rate fork springs completely transformed mine. So much better handling in the rough stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I'm not sure why it did that. I was using Davinci to edit, and I think I did something wrong taking it from there to UA-cam.
How long it take you to get from Elk City to Lochsa?
I think it took me around 10 hours or so. I know it was all in a single day.

Really appreciate the drone view of that track. Definitely made for a lighter bike. I have a 2001 KLX300 - kick start and not street legal - and it's a tractor on gnarly hillbilly sections around here. Thanks for sharing your ride.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunatley the drone got a little lost for the first section, but it worked well for the scenic sections. I was planning on getting the street legal non-R version, but they are impossible to find, so I ended up just getting the R and making it street legal. Such a great bike.
