Turns out the fungus thing was wrong. It had been a lie from the beginning if you read a line from the lady who was faking being the sorrel house tour guide. She said she could see that ashlyn opened up a massive rift that could have taken her too. Meaning ash can subconsciously open up portals at midnight. My theory is that she was born at midnight, and she managed to open the rift(which mind you was out of her control) but that spent all of her energy. The sorrel weed house just so happened to be an energy source that ashlyn had absorbed. Which is why she and everyone involved(including all of their parents) get put into the phantom dimension at midnight
