    If I was a Civil War era general, the thought of having other units on both of your flanks would offer strength and security. Sickles moving forward makes no sense. Even with the geographical features he might have thought were more defensible, moving forward exposed his flanks. Sickles almost cost the Union the battle.

    Sheen, for all the criticisms, gets one thing very right about Lee: Lee's pain of knowing he's going to lose the war and is just wasting precious lives on both sides. Lee is a pitiful person. And Sheen did this justice.

    The best things about the movie Gettysburg: 1. Tom Berenger's incredible swag as Longstreet 2. Martin Sheen's increasingly demented rendition of Lee 3. The "there is no time!" sequence which is just great The absolute worst things about the movie Gettysburg: 1. I am sorry but Jeff Daniels is a ham 2. The score that tells you exactly how you must feel at every moment 3. The utter failure to capture the horror of what unfolded there, and the apparent absence of any intent to capture it

    Question: Didn’t Sickles have a second in command who he was talking to in order to get a second opinion from? Did this officer write his version of this battle instead of saying “he was probably thinking this or that”? Sickles must have been trying to figure a plan and had some input from a second in command. I feel that the importance of West Point training is that you learn to listen to commands.

    • @battleofgettysburgpodcast

      Sickles's senior subordinate was General David Birney, commander of his First Division. Birney is a Sickles supporter but not a West Pointer. Check out our video on Second Division commander Andrew Humphreys where we discuss a little more of the West Point / non-West Point dynamic in the Third Corps.

    Sickles is wrong all the way around. And is lack of military training shows here. Meade, upon seeing Sickles' new position, tells him that this is undefendable ground - for either side. But it's too late. The attack has begun. Had he stayed where he was, V Corps was still there to defend the Round Tops. if need be.

    The federal and confederate officers were trained in napoleonic tactics-the theory was that both ends fought and the reserves -so to speak - from the center was sent to refortify the ends leaving the middle of the line less populated with soldiers.

    The movie Gettysburg is a work of historical fiction that unfortunately frames most Americans' understanding of the battle and the Civil War. Much of the dialogue is apocryphal, it never happened. While the movie is entertaining and could be the reason some people become Civil War enthusiasts, it is a fairly poor piece of history.

    I’m glad you discussed the scene where Longstreet tells Lee that Meade is now in charge. As a real student of the battle, I’m always dismayed that historians gloss over this important point in history. They never discuss it. It kind of goes with the fact that they hardly ever discuss Meade anyway. Some historians talk about the battle and Lee’s decisions and it seems like Meade wasn’t even there. Which strangely enough Meade actually predicted later in life. Lee really wanted to fight Mr “FJ Hooker.” I have to believe when he found out it was Meade It was bad news to him. I wish you guys would expand on that. I’ve never heard one historian ever going to detail about this. I’ve studied this battle so extensively. I personally think it made a huge difference in the way the battle was fought not to mention the outcome. If you were playing an NFL football game at 1pm on Sunday and found out at noon that it was a different quarterback it would definitely change your strategy. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

    • @battleofgettysburgpodcast
      @battleofgettysburgpodcast 5 місяців тому

      Thanks George for the comment. We also discussed this topic in our 'June 28' podcast episode. Lee likely would have preferred to fight Hooker after Chancellorsville, although we can wonder if Lee didn't much care who they threw at him at this point. Hence the line, "There may be an opportunity here..." As much as Gettysburg enthusiasts talk about the damage that was done to George Meade's reputation and image, one can argue that nothing was more damaging in modern times than his portrayal in Killer Angels / Gettysburg. The notion that Meade didn't really do anything is what one comes away with from the novel / movie. (For anyone who says, "it's just a movie," sorry but we encounter people in real life who have that perception.) As we noted in the podcast, we like to poke fun at the inescapable idea that Winfield Hancock was running the Army of the Potomac. We like Hancock too (who doesn't?) but come on!

      @@battleofgettysburgpodcast thank you so much. I’ll look for that old podcast. Thank you for your input. I agree with you. Even Meade predicted that years to come it will be like he wasn’t even there. I’ve actually been on the battlefield and asked by people where Grant was during the battle. Jefferson Davis had a very high opinion of Meade. And he said so did Lee. I have always found it very revealing that the first thing Lee said after he signed the surrender documents at Appomattox was “please make sure general Meade knows about this.” I think he knew it was Meade who was pounding him all those months.

    Always keep in mind that "Gettysburg" is a MOVIE, not a history lecture. It has to appeal to millions of non-historians in the compression of a couple of hours. The move "Patton" has gargantuan historical inaccuracies but the producers and directors successfully convey the essence of who the man was and what he did, which is the whole point. If you want an academic presentation, there are lecture rooms at West Point.

    • @battleofgettysburgpodcast
      @battleofgettysburgpodcast 5 місяців тому

      No, we don't want an academic presentation. But it is what it is -- we encounter many people who take all of it or parts of it as straight history so it's fair game to set the record straight.

    The John Wayne movie was far superior to the 2004 film because it gets the viewer in the heart. There is a deep emotional connection to the Alamo and the defenders. Laurence Harvey was epic as Travis. The film may not necessarily be history, but it inspires.

    • @battleofgettysburgpodcast
      @battleofgettysburgpodcast 4 місяці тому

      I probably agree with you on that. The Wayne movie made me want to learn more about the Alamo as a kid. The 2004 film is superior in terms of accuracy, although as we know not without its own flaws, but is lacking in inspiration. In our opinion, of course.

      We might agree with you on some of that! Personally, I think he is stronger at the beginning of the film but seems to deteriorate in front of our eyes as the film progresses. Interesting to speculate what the movie would have been like with a "stronger" Lee, although we often note that the "sick" Lee is more consistent with his portrayal in the novel.
