Congrats on 1000 hours of CI. Don't worry about speaking yet. I am at 1260 hours and still not speaking yet. I may try speaking at 1500 hours, we will see. Thank you for the info about the Crosstalk WhatsApp. - Dave

I am glad you are better! And i fully agree that these ideologies are not designed for specific needs of individuals. Broad principles are good, but do whatever works for you. When you are fluent, no Spanish speaker you speak to will care what methods you used. They will just be happy that you can converse with them.

why won't you speak?

Even if you had 5000 hours of input, you won't get better at speaking until you do it. It's an entirely different process. That's why there are a lot of people that can understand but not speak a language. This has been my experience, but I'm just random dude in a comment section so....

I totally agree with you about your point - If I'm wrong only doing CI, I can fill in later with grammar and it will be a lot easier. That only makes sense to me. That's how I learned my native language. Mom & Dad taught me grammar through example. I'll get it. :)

I support your hours counting method 😂 there is no right answer, the strict counters have “artificially” low numbers, if you count everything it’s “artificially” high, there’s just no perfect method and no need to be obsessive, like you said. It all evens out.

I think building your listening is harder than pronunciation, once you improve your pronunciation it will stay relatively good, but maintaining a vocabulary is hard if you don't get input often. I think when I was at around 900 hours I sounded a lot like you do right now, I'm at probably over 1800 now and I'm finally starting to develop the accent of the country from which I get most of my input, Mexico, rather than just a full on gringo accent, which is cool.

Gran trabajo amigo. Veo que estas haciendo un gran esfuerzo, sin duda ese es el camino, trabajo duro. Pero con todo respeto me permito hacerte algunas sugerencias: 1º RELAX: Pásalo bien, comente errores, improvisa, no tengas miedo de decir cosas mal. 2º Olvida tu preocupación por el acento, no vas a conseguir tener un acento de hablante de español hasta que no vivas bastante tiempo entre personas que solo hablen en español. De todas formas la riqueza de nuestro idioma radica en la gran variedad de acentos y formas de hablar el español que hay por todo el mundo. No tiene el mismo acento un chileno que un nicaragüense o que un hondureño. Incluso dentro de España existen diversos acentos distintos (y otras lenguas como el euskera, catalán, gallego y bable). De momento y por mucho tiempo vas a tener acento de "guiri" que es como llamamos en España a los extranjeros. Eso no es ningún problema. 3º Deja a Mark Twain, que era un magnifico escritor, un genio de las letras, pero no escribía en español. Estas aprendiendo español, lee autores españoles, mexicanos, argentinos, uruguayos...etc. Las traducciones del ingles al español no sirven para aprender, acude a la fuente original del idioma. Tenemos formas de expresión propias que no existen en el inglés. Personalmente elegiría a Borges (argentino) por la enorme riqueza de su vocabulario, muy culto y porque tiene varios relatos cortos que son muy buenos. Pero lo mismo te sirven Gabriel García Márquez, Benito Pérez Galdos, Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca y muchos mas. Dime que tipo de literatura te gusta y te recomendare un autor de habla española. 4º El cine en español y sobre todo la música son dos herramientas muy útiles. Puedes ver cine en lengua española con subtítulos. Pero lo mas divertido es aprender cantando canciones en español. Hay mucha y muy buena música de todo tipo en español. 5º Lo mas difícil de la lengua española son los tiempos verbales y escribir sin faltas de ortografía. Mi consejo es que dediques una hora al día solo a la conjugación de verbos. Recítalos en voz alta para oírte pronunciar y forzarte a hacerlo bien. Tomas un verbo, el que quieras, y lo conjugas en todos los tiempos verbales y en todas las personas (yo, tu, el, nosotros, vosotros, ellos) en modo indicativo y subjuntivo. Ve poco a poco pero con constancia. Para aprender a escribir, escribe y despues lee lo que has escrito en voz alta. Yo soy español de España, concretamente soy de Sevilla. Muchos te dirán que la forma correcta de aprender el español es aprender el español que se habla en mi país, España. Yo no estoy muy seguro de eso. Creo que como hablan el español en América es tan perfectamente bueno como el que hablamos aquí. De hecho a veces tienen una forma de hablar mas sonora y bonita. Por ejemplo cuando escucho hablar a una bella mujer uruguaya me derrito por dentro , jajajaja. El Español es un idioma complejo, no es tan practico y directo como el inglés, pero no es imposible, animo y suerte. Si tienes alguna pregunta estoy a tu disposición.

Just saw this in my recomendations but well done, I know it might be a struggle with the r's, accentuations and tenses, well also vocabulary but just keep practicing. Sorry that you get comments from trolls but everyone who wants a learn a new language there's always a struggle and it's understandable and most if we live in a country that doesn't speak the language we are learning.

Listening is the hardest thing. Don't worry about your accent or speaking until you feel comfortable with your listening comprehension. Just focus on listening to things where you can understand most of the input.

Great work! I am just at 300 hours but was forced to speak during a recent trip to Mexico. Everyone could understand me, but I couldn't understand them unless they were speaking slowly about a topic I initiated (e.g., talking to uber driver about the location). Your speech is much better than mine. Unlike others in the DS community I do think it requires practice and won't come just from listening. My evidence for this is I know many immigrant kids who can understand their parent's tongue but cannot speak. They must have had tens of thousands of hours of input, but never needed to speak. They essentially do crosstalk exclusively.

If La Gata is too fast for you and you're not understanding what she's talking about then the level is too high for you. You could try slowing it down a touch and see if you understand better, if you do then watch her videos on a slower speed. You can decrease the speed better with the custom in the speed settings. With custom it does it with smaller increments. If you slow it down and you still struggle to understand her then I'd listen to DS videos or other at a lower level for a while then come back say after 50 hours and try again. She does speak fast and the level is advanced. I've seen a few DS acquirers at 1000 hours that listen to that level. Some find it quite easy and some not so. Keep going Alex. You'll get there. 👍

Hey Alex! As you know, we've been dealing with the speaking issue too. We are both at about 770 hours though. Since being here in Spain, we've gradually started speaking more and more as the months go on and espeically as we have to do a bunch of things to settle down, like the bank, post office, pharmacies, doctors etc etc. It's tough! One of the things that we are finding and Greg and I just talked about this earlier this week, is our pronunciation of the vowels. If we don't pronounce those right, then we are dead giveaways for non-native speakers. We were practicing with the word Chocolate. English speakers can have a tendency to insert our vowel pronunciation in maybe the first O. We might say ChAcOlate. The first O being a soft A. But Spanish is a hard O for both O's. It's the subtle things like that. So I would say, focus on the pronunciation of the Vowels and instantly you will sound more natural or native. Good Luck Alex!! Let's do this!

Im not worried about my speaking so much. I feel fine speaking, writing and reading... but listening is my big problem. I listen and listen and listen and it never gets better. I can listen to dreaming spanish, I can understand at least half of their advanced videos... but then If i turn on a Spanish podcast, movie or TV show, I dont understand anything

Good job! Ignore the trolls who are telling you to speak. I get the some comments but I am not going to speak until I feel I am ready and the language is starting to emerge. I hope to start speaking around 1600 to 1800 hours. Keep up the good work. We got this! - Dave

On Dreaming Spanish did look at videos in a certain accent or did you just watch all regions?

Did you read and write as part of your learning? Did you start that after lots of listening first or did you do both right out of the gate? Or are you purely going for input?

I’m at 800 hours and charlas hispanas podcast has been good for me to get quality input I just skip the grammar episodes. There’s almost 1200 episodes all around 10 minutes so plenty to keep busy.

For those who "accidentally " stumbled upon your channel, what's a crosstalk? Two people talking each in their own language? Did you come up with it yourself?

for everyone reading this I recommend "Language Transfer" there is an app but you could also just listen to it on youtube although personally i prefer the app since i can download the audios to listen to them offline and i can track which lesson no. i am on. It's all free and i'm pretty sure once you try it you will get what i am talking about.
