    Well done, beautiful quilt, I might just be able to open one of my jelly rolls to make something similar 😅. A little tip you might like to hear, randomly fold your lovely quilt so the wadding doesn’t form permanent and unsightly ridges along the fold lines.

    I started a simple crew neck raglan by Ann Budd, I am watching my number of stitches and measurements like a hawk. I have trouble with the fitting. I also started a pair of dk socks for Christmas gift. The pattern is out of the Saltwater Gifts book. Enjoy those books. Your sweater looks warm and cozy and the color is fantastic for you.

    • @leighk1275

      I'm sure there must be other mordants, but it does depend what you're dying

  • @lynnesmith6827

    I laughed when you mentioned you had many more avocado pits than needed. I did the same thing when I explored natural dyes. I saved several freezer bags full of pits and skins only to realize later that I only needed a few to make my dye pot. Most of them found their way to our compost pile. I purchased 100% cotton white nightshirts to experiment with, knowing no matter how they turned out I could wear them. Wasn’t thrilled with the streaks running through them and the color varied wildly. I’m glad I tried it but once was enough for me. 😂

    • @leighk1275
      @leighk1275 10 місяців тому

      Yes, my compost heap saw a lot of avocado action too. And I need not have enlisted friends to help save them either.

    I was really interested in your dye process Leigh I have some white cotton which I do embroidery on and sometimes think a coloured background would be good how many avocado skins and stones did you use? My cotton is white so would it be a stronger colour after dyeing.

    • @leighk1275
      @leighk1275 10 місяців тому

      I think three or four stones would give you quite a good colour for an A3 sized but of fabric.

  • @leslieambailey
    @leslieambailey 10 місяців тому

    Hi! I like your result in cotton! For wool, I don’t mordant when dying with avocado or yellow onion. I do add vinegar, but I don’t even think that’s necessary. There are enough tannins that you’re not supposed to need mordant. Maybe you might try again with wool or silk!! I agree - the less complicated the better!

    Nice experiment 😍 I’ve read a few natural dyeing books and done a bit of natural dyeing and this is the first I’ve heard of different mordants for protein v cellulose 🤔 In fact, one of the (many) great things about natural dyeing is that you can throw wool and cotton in the same pan and the dye will work on both 🤩 I now need to do some research, thank you 👍🏻

    I enjoyed (always have) your podcasts/postcards. I have no podcast but often work from my car. I recall your " office" from your car. These days I have a constant companion wherever I go AND I make sure my little Charlie (dog though he's never been referred to as a dog. He's an excellent person). Is with me. I toyed with plant based dyeing using Polk berries. Poisonous but make a beautiful HOT Pink. I didn't soak my fabric first thinking the water would dilute the plant material. I just plunged my old sheet into the color bath and let it sit there until it was a pleasing color to me. To set/mordant the mess, I used white vinegar after rinsing most of the extra dye out. Just saturated the fabric well and hung it to dry. My children were very small then so there was no leaving things set. Were I to dye these dsys, I thing I'd use the dame process but dye more fabric. The color you have is Beautiful. Hope you continue to Plant Bade Dye. I'd like to try Onion. Might not be a good idea but then again? Thank you ❤

    You are hysterical. You are going to put those socks into the cabinet!!!!!!! (For a few years) 😅. For some reason, after numerous pairs of socks knitted over the years, I cannot figure out how to do a toe on a sock. I’ve pulled it out several times and still Greek to me. The first sock toe I got so flustered I just forced it and well I really need to rip that back too. I should put them in the cupboard because every time I sit down in my chair I can hear them screaming at me in the project bag next to me to fix them.

    I seldom have willpower to go back to big fails.. I used to put them in the bin and squirt bleach on them to make sure they were out of my life. I don’t use bleach now so often big fails get attacked with scissors or burnt in the bonfire of humility (my wood burner). Then I can walk away and erase that the horror ever happened. I am not proud of this. In my sketchbook I have found copious glue and a pretty picture hides most mistakes

My biggest mistake is that I haven’t cut the fabric in careful enough squares or rectangles and had no forward planning of what to do with the little shapes when I have finished. Hello Leigh! Boreray is one of the islands in the St. Kilda archipelago but I'm not sure if that's where the sheep breed originates from, or whether they are related to Soays which are the traditional sheep of the main island and now run wild there. More investigation is required! Your spinning sampling sounds fun.
