Neolithic Monument mostly destroyed 'though the sheer stupidity of men!'
For this video, we are in the north of Wales, exploring a site named Ty Newydd on the isle of Anglesey
This site is a fine example of how ancient monuments, that have survived for thousands of years, have been robbed, vandalised and destroyed over the last few centuries... blown up to clear fields and repair walls... fires lit upon and underneath... capstones levered off... familiar stories across the country, but this site has experienced them all!
We’ve found a variety of descriptions and illustrations dating as far back as 1781, including two explanations for the missing stones. The site was once described as a ‘double cromlech’ but at present the monument consists of a 12ft by 5ft capstone partially held up by brick supports which were added after excavations in the 1930s.. In this video we’ll cover the known history of Ty Newydd and how its condition has deteriorated over the years.

Hi love the site and your vids BUT I would caution against the use of superlatives e.g. 'the finest' (beauty is in the eye of the beholder). While its hard to beat for example the sublime composition Bryn Cader Faner finds itself it within (between mountain and seascape), it is perhaps not as impressive a ring cairn as Carn Llechart near Pontardawe. I also note that your travels in Wales are largely dedicated to the national parks and the more traditionally scenic/tourist friendly areas. Could I suggest you also take in lesser known sites in the post-industrial South East - places like the above and Hen Dre'r Mynydd (old settlement on the mountain) in the Rhondda.

We don't know what the BBC left on the cutting room floor. It is true that in the 2021 documentary Parker Pearson was excited and believed he had found a stone circle which contributed bluestones to Stonehenge. Note however that his confidence did not replace his reliance on science; and he foresaw several more years of excavating and scientific testing before he could confirm his theory. Unfortunately in 2022 scientific testing came back which disproved his theory! On 1st August 2022 he published an article in Antiquity magazine stating: "In the light of Bevins et al.’s (2022) new analysis, which reveals that the stones at Waun Mawn have no geological match to the 43 surviving Bluestones at Stonehenge, it may be that none of Waun Mawn’s stones ever reached the Wessex monument." He did however have answers refuting Darvill's other criticisms (published in the same issue), including an important date which Darvill later conceded was off by 500 years. Please also note that this project was still a success in other ways, providing much new information including the discovery of two quarries which were proven to be the sources of some of Stonehenge's stones. Parker Pearson's article, co-signed by 14 other archaeologists and scientists, can be found here: discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10161300/2/Parker%20Pearson_How%20Waun%20Mawn%20stone%20circle%20was%20designed%20and%20built%2C%20and%20when%20the%20Bluestones%20arrived%20at%20Stonehenge_AAM.pdf

@oliphantfiction5144 Hi, thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful reply to the points raised in our video. While we do agree that MPP later became more pragmatic about some claims made in his papers and in the BBC doc, he and the BBC have never put the record straight. The bold public declarations were stated/presented as fact, and unfortunately, many people still believe them to be facts. For example... the two quarries you mention have never been proven to be quarries. At best, they are close matches to some stonehenge stones and therefore could be 'sources'... the continued implication that they have been proven to be quarries is the problematic reason why we made the video.... we are working on a follow-up that includes the latest statements from all parties, and we're currently waiting on further information regarding the altar stone (and the not very scientific way in which it's provenance has been suggested).

    • @oliphantfiction5144
      @oliphantfiction5144 5 днів тому

Thank you for your reply. This video was very interesting but the tone seemed personal, suggesting it was exposing someone's wrongdoings. I hope the second video will make it clear that in archaeology it is common for people to disagree, but that both sides are searching for the truth. Regarding the "quarries" and other issues, this video is expressing opinions, not facts. These opinions may have been carefully thought out, but they are not evidence which refute the theories of the Stones of Stonehenge project. Perhaps also in the next video the geologist's opinions would be buttressed by bringing in highly recognized geologists who share his opinions. Parker Pearson has made many important discoveries about Stonehenge which are near-universally accepted because his meticulous work backed up the theories. When he had a theory proven wrong (by his own scientific testing) he published the new information. Here is a passage from his 2023 book 'Stonehenge, A Brief History' which describes how archaeology advances: "Not a year goes by without a major discovery with implications for reinterpreting existing evidence and expectations....Theories are reviewed and modified or even overturned as new evidence comes to light, and it is often the case that a hypothesis can be discarded within days of starting an excavation. Archaeologists work with multiple hypotheses all the time. In favourable and fortuitous situations they may be able to test these, so as to reject some and retain or modify others. More often, they can only weigh the balance of evidence as supporting one theory as opposed to another. In such cases, interpretation is often not clear-cut and opinions may vary between experts, especially with new evidence and novel understandings which can take years to be accepted or ultimately rejected."

I was there a few times this summer, on a megalith tour of the island. The electromagnetic frequencies in the dolmen were very low, much less than the longer standing stones/dolmens on Anglesey. It's such a shame how badly these monuments have been treated over the years. Who knows what information they could have thrown up if they had been intact.

I would like to see a video on the night of the Samhain from the area of where the blue stones from Wales where quarried for the original circle at Stonehenge I would be interested if you think you had any greater clarity of thought while you were there on this night, Nov 11. Perhaps get answers to questions you would have never thought to ask . It is my theory that they believed they knew these stones heightened there ability to listen to there ancestors. Like the Australian Aborigine's, our ancestors also would have had song lines, these people were very advanced and knew how to listen to there minds .They had a far different relationship with the earth and there ancestors.

A few years ago a colleague and I visited this site as part of a broader landscape survey in support of a dissertation regarding a proposed disarticulated assemblage nearby. The cup-marks share an "alignment" (for want of a better word) with a worked notch on the underside of the capstone, perhaps speaking to some unknown astronomical observation lost to precession ( interestingly and speculatively the tips of ranging poles placed in the "cups" describe an arc across the sky ). The area does have a liminal quality and is associated with water nearby as is the case with many such structures. A note, signed by the architect would have been helpful, but alas there is none, so anyone's guess is as good as another.

I love stories of the Afanc, I grew up near Betws-y-Coed which has it's own version, about a mile south of Betws there's the beaver pool (which is just a wide section of the Conwy River) where the Afanc was said to have lived and built dams to stop the river flowing down into Betws, the road bridge is called the Beaver bridge too and is at the start of the short path down the famous Fairy Glen (like the Afanc, one of several in the area!) , the use of a fair maiden and chains is exactly the same, but in this variant the Afanc was dragged up Snowdon and thrown into the bottomless lake (I love how folk tales add features like this!) Glaslyn where it's said to still live to this day, that's the version my Dad scared me with as a child anyway, and he loved to embellish!

Stonehenge is a construction of a burial mound of some noble leader of the Bronze Age. Structures of the same design have been found in many mounds of Eurasia. Unlike the British one, these interior structures were made of wood. That's why the Romans didn't report Stonehenge, it was inside a mound that was revered and guarded by local Celts. Then the Romans left, and the Germans, Angles, Jutes, and Saxons came. The Germans excavated and looted the mound, of which only the stones of the internal structure remained. That's the whole riddle, that's the answer to the Stonehenge riddle. Greetings from Russia!

Very well done--a pleasure to watch. It occurs to me that the popular story of a stone being somehow moved by humans so very far, while it is probably incorrect, may help to generate the money that will eventually find the truth.

One of my very favorite philosophers is Montaigne. He had the words "What do I Know?" carved over the mantle in his study. Uncertainty is sometimes uncomfortable and certainly is not as entertaining as a good story, but I detect that this video is presented in the spirit of Montaigne. So I love it. Another philosopher who would, I suspect, agree with this video in Occam. "Entities must not be multiplied beyond need." A glacier picked up the stones and moved them. Simple as that. No first ring needed to make the chronology fit, not traces of a dragging path, no venerable cult of bluestones needed. Lies are long, truth short

Brilliant, yes... very much presented in that spirit, I don't know much about Montaigne but I like him already and will do some further reading! Glad you detected that and enjoyed the video 😊

Was the Neolithic culture destroyed by the Bronze age people, so that stonehenge was never completed?

Yes, that's one theory. Another is that they never had enough stones, so in the end they just gave up in disgust and went off to do something else.........

Hi guys, absolutely love your channel. I live in Bridgend, South Wales and as a lorry driver I have been to many of the places you visit, including Devils Bridge.. sadly however, I never have the time to explore these beautiful and interesting places as I’m always racing against the clock. When I get the time I hope to follow in your footsteps and teach my granddaughter about this wonderful country of ours 😊. Thank you so much for your amazing videos. I hope we see many more 😊
