Watch me ANALYSE PAPERS with my students
In this video, I explain how to analyse papers and journal articles while doing it with my 1st year students.
The process required to effectively read and analyse papers and journal articles involves 5 stages, and I go through the entire process: 1) identify potentially relevant research papers, 2) extract meaning, 3) structure meaning, 4) add meaning and re-evaluate structure and 5) write from analysis.
Learning how to analyse a journal article effectively can fast track your ability to carry out your literature review, while at the same time work towards producing a high quality literature review.
It is often the case that students know reasonably well how to read journal articles, but they struggle to understand how to analyse journal articles effectively. Understanding this challenge, I developed a systematic process to help my students develop the required skills, which I apply in this video.

    Hello Dr. Can you have a lecture on identifying theories appropriate for the study?

    • @DissertationAcademy
      @DissertationAcademy 10 днів тому

      @@aniMATHed Thanks for your comment and suggestion. I don't have anything ready to record about that specific topic, but I will add it to my list of future topics to cover. One thing I can say is that you should see theory as the lens which you are going to observe the object (i.e. the context of the research). When searching for possible theories, the challenge is to identify possible lenses to observe the object we want to study.

    Thank you very much. Just one question, do we build our themes and meaning based on the findings articles, ?also, how do build meaning and themes if each article has it own research context and design?

    • @DissertationAcademy
      @DissertationAcademy 27 днів тому

      Thanks for your comment and questions. Answering your questions: 1) there is no single way of doing it. I guess we can consider two areas when 'building' our themes: structure of themes and labels used to describe themes. You can use theory if it has been done before but you can also come up with your own structure and labels. 2) You can borrow existing structures/labels from others if broadly speaking they make sense in your case. And sometimes we can take thinigs from what seems a fairly different context and use it in ours, as long as it still makes sense in your context. Hope this helps

    One quick question. I see you have many videos on academic tools/apps. What would be your ONE go to place for academic research - especially literature review in social science - even if it is a paid option? Please guide me. I can buy only one subscription. Thank you!

    • @DissertationAcademy
      @DissertationAcademy 2 місяці тому

      @@RaihanJamil thanks for your question. I think there are still benefits from doing the literature review the old fashioned way - manually. Simply because analytical tools can only look at the surface meaning of the papers rather than analyse the deep meaning / implicit assumptions. This said, some parts of the process can benefit from automation and the support of tools. I have not delved enough into AI tools but sometimes I use a PDFGear (free tool) to help me analyse papers faster. There are also good visualisation tools (litmaps - free and paid) to help you track links between papers.
