    Such a heart breaking story. There are likely so many stories like that. Way back in the 70s, the government closed all the places that could have taken care of those with mental health issues. One such example was the Clark Institute in Toronto. I did a student internship at the Woodstock ON hospital. One side was for those with mental health issues. Today we have access to many drugs to control these issues, but who makes sure they take the drugs? All clients were deemed capable of caring for themselves and sent out. The places of "refuge and care" were closed down. Many were fine as long as they took their meds. When cared for, they took their meds. Once released they figured they had no need of them. Many of these people are homeless on the streets today. The concept that a 12 - 13 year old is capable of making decisions regarding her own health issues is absolutely insane. They simply do not have the capability to do that

    I've always questioned the fixation upon a sobriety date. If you truly want to make a lifelong change you can't put a timestamp on it. It's a form of all or nothing thinking, which is harmful to long-term recovery.

    I'm not surprised that the hospital units do not know about AARC because it is a private treatment facility where families need to pay for the service. In a health facility, it is not super ethical to promote private fee for service facilities. Can you let listeners know what the cost for treatment is? What happens for families who are not set up to be a "recovery home"? What I mean by that is families who live in limited quarters, do not have the resources to have an additional person in their home -- living in a rental unit that does not permit additional bodies etc.

    • @AshestoAwesome
      @AshestoAwesome 6 місяців тому

      Yes it is a private treatment facility. They are also a registered non-profit organization. I would disagree that it would be unethical for a health facility to have the information on hand for desperate parents regardless of the non profit status though. That is of course, assuming there is nothing unsavory in the way of "kick backs" or the like. We pick and choose very carefully who we choose to align ourselves with. One of the criteria for this, is making sure that their values and mission align with our own. To date, I have received zero financial incentive from AARC, and should that change in the future, the qualifiers remain the same. As for the cost, that along with the specifics of how the program works are available by getting in touch with AARC. Though as mentioned near the end of the episode by Raylen, the mother who has been through program, and much like myself wan not paid for the endorsement, made a point of mentioning that there are subsidies available and that AARC works with families who may not be able to afford it, in order to accept as many kids as possible.

    • @ciarabrady7929
      @ciarabrady7929 6 місяців тому

      AARC receives partial funding from the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Mental Health & Addiction which allows them to offer a sliding scale fee. Each family’s circumstances are unique but, for over 32 years, AARC have remained committed to prioritizing treatment for youth safety. When it comes to fee for service, AARC have remained consistent in their messaging that NO FAMILY WILL BE TURNED AWAY DUE TO LACK OR INCOME OR SAVINGS. The Recovery Home process is a mandatory part of treatment and, as a graduate of the program, I can understand why. Although overwhelming on paper, it is the favourite part of treatment for families and clients. It is part of the therapeutic process of the program and what makes the AARC experience and community unique. Unfortunately, this component does not work for all families, however, AARC is an outside the box organization that can consider individual circumstances. Hope this helps.

    My son is a survivor and living in recovery for seven years this month. I am thankful every moment of every day that I still have him in my world physically. For me, I want to focus on the positive aspects of his being. I am not ashamed of his journey and hold his value very high. To hear this podcast, I am uplifted by the focus on celebrating the lives of those who have gone on before us. The appreciation of their souls, their impact on us and on others. The recognition of real life help that parents need while they navigate a loss so profound there are no words to express their grief. Thank you Noreen for the work you are doing.
