Balancing a Pressed Chest Voice
Переглядів 5802 роки тому
One of the issues that I see commonly in the bottom of the voice is having a "pressed" chest voice. It's when the vocal cords are coming together a little bit too forcefully. There is usually some extrinsic muscle tension happening and it's causing you to squeeze and force the vocal cords together a little too hard. This cuts off your airflow and makes it more difficult to get through the middl...

    Is it normal to find that the bubbles get bigger/stronger when you descend into your lower range? Or is that because my breath control is a bit off?

    • @theunlimitedvoice
      @theunlimitedvoice 2 місяці тому

      I would try to keep the bubbles as even as possible even as you descend. It may take a little more breath control to do that. It’s common to want to land a little harder into the bottom. Focus on keeping everything even- volume, intensity, vowel, and the bubbles and see how that goes. Let me know!

    Thank you for this video! Great to see how you helped her to even out the tone rather than letting it get shouty and stay in a really thick folds position as she went up higher. As someone who pivoted from the classical/MT world to singing more commercial for my current job, solid stuff here :) Incorporating Brett Mannings edge technique and pharyngeal exercises, particularly his 'nng' exercises are a few more absolute MUSTS, especially for us pivot singers! There's certainly more, but those two specially were major game changers for me, and now I'm singing commercial more easily and authentically than I ever did... And this is all before we got into even more nitty gritty details of vibrato speed, colouring, syncopation, articulation, consonant focus, and all that goes into these different commercial styles! It's a wild, wonderful world to explore and while there's no such thing a unicorn...I love a being of jack of all trades, and knowing I can wear many musical hats when I need to wear them at different times! But I still come back to my formal training because it's like medicine for me :)

    Except for the fact that you were a little nervous, everything you said made perfect sense, good information. I just want to say that, for most beginners watching this video. extending your "speaking range" or just taking that speaking voice higher, will take a long time, don't rush, focus on strenthening that ligter coordination, make it as poweful and AS RELIABLE as possible, bring it as low as you can before increasing the ammoun of TA or even attempt belting. This is specially crucial for lighter voices.

    hii should my straw be shallow or deep for range extension?

    • @theunlimitedvoice
      @theunlimitedvoice Рік тому

      As you go higher in your range, you may want to reduce the depth of the straw so that you have a little more airflow and less resistance. You'll have to experiment a bit and find the sweet spot where you still feel the back pressure from the straw/water, but it's not so much that those high notes are more difficult to sing. Using a long scale like an octave and a half is good for working on range. You can find a recording of that on my website under Blogs > Scale Patterns. Let me know how it goes!

    • @theunlimitedvoice
      @theunlimitedvoice 2 роки тому

      Hi Mirjam! It could be a couple of things. First, you might actually need a little more airflow/less resistance... so try moving the straw less deep in the water when you get up high and see if that helps. Also, make sure you are keeping a nice "UH" vowel in the throat. You can even keep it a little on the "dumb" side. Think "papa bear" voice. Let me know if either of those helps!

    Is it normal that I still have air to exhale after I physically can't do bubbles anymore? It feels like I'm holding my breath when I do bubbles, and the first thing I do when it becomes unbearable is exhale, but it looks like you're inhaling directly after. Thanks for the video! 🌟🌟

    • @theunlimitedvoice
      @theunlimitedvoice 2 роки тому

      Hi Maria. You should be exhaling all of your air as you do the exercise, so you wouldn't have any air left to exhale afterward. Make sure you are keeping your chest lifted and open while you do the exercise, all while gently pulling your navel into your spine. You can even imagine your ribcage is expanding while you bring the belly in. That should help you exhale all of your air. Let me know if you're still having trouble after trying that. Good luck!

    • @theunlimitedvoice
      @theunlimitedvoice 2 роки тому

      Hi! You will build up more stamina over time. Here are a few things to check in on though. 1. Make sure you are keeping your chest open and lifted. Don't let your ribcage collapse as you exhale. And, don't exhale so far that it feels uncomfortable. 2. Make sure you have the right amount of resistance. In other words, make sure the straw is the right depth into the water. You want it to be a little bit of effort to get the air/sound out. It shouldn't be so easy to get it out that you are actually releasing too much air as you go. Also, I like to use just a normal size straw to do straw in water. Not the tiny ones or the smoothie/bobo size ones. See if these tips help, and let me know how it goes!

      Just breathing through the straw won't help phonation. If you want to improve your voice, you'd need to make sound through the straw. What are you trying to achieve with it?
