Night in the Woods' Most Profound Question
Night in the Woods discusses about some heavy topics: the reverberations of history, family legacy, religion, and mental health (to name a few).
But the biggest, most profound question it asks isn't about any of its grand ideals; it's actually a rather simple one. It's a question that we all ask every day.

The Horror Game That Hates Horror Games
Переглядів 99 тис.Місяць тому
Alan Wake' relationship to the horror genre is a strange one. It's a horror game that seems to... not want to be a horror game. - Support the Channel! www.patreon.com/iamadot Follow for Updates: x.com/iamadot64 iamadot64 - Games Discussed: Alan Wake (2010) / Platforms: Xbox 360, PC / Publisher: Microsoft / Developer: Remedy Entertainment / Creative Director: Sam Lake / Genre: Hor...
The BRUTAL Irony of The Last of Us (and Other "Cinematic" Games)
Переглядів 23 тис.2 місяці тому
The Last of Us has been the center of discussion in the decade since its original release. Many games, released long before and long after it contain well-paced linear stories... yet the game feels somewhat different from its "cinematic" contemporaries. The Last of Us reveals a brutal irony, not just with itself but with games as a storytelling medium. (I used the PS5 remake cuz its shiny.) - S...
Bayonetta and The Dodge Roll Revolution
Переглядів 17 тис.3 місяці тому
Bayonetta is one of the most over-the-top adrenaline rushes of a game ever! But if you ask me, its most interesting mechanic isn't an offensive one... but a defensive one. Intentionally or not, Bayonetta (and another historically important contemporary) ask an important question: How can the parts where a character is NOT dealing damage be as empowering as the parts where they are? - Support th...
The Thousand-Year Door Exploits You (and That's Okay!)

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is one of Nintendo's most fiercely beloved games. While many people are nostalgic for the game itself, its story is all *about* the power of nostalgia. It's a game that makes its own rose-tinted glasses. - Support the Channel! www.patreon.com/iamadot Follow for Updates! x.com/iamadot64 iamadot64 - Games Discussed: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year...
Super Metroid's Greatest Moment
Переглядів 103 тис.4 місяці тому
Or maybe it's the worst moment. Super Metroid is much more than its structure. Its maze-like map is filled with memorable moments that make the player question what else is possible. My favorite moment in the game is only a few seconds long but it encapsulates the spirit of this genre-defining classic. - Support the Channel! www.patreon.com/iamadot Follow for Updates! x.com/iamadot64 instagram....
Games Where You're NOT the Main Character
Переглядів 3 млн5 місяців тому
Video games have an interesting relationship with the term "protagonist." While it should be obvious who the main character of a game is, sometimes it's a little ambiguous. In this video essay, we'll look at three games that challenge out notions of what a protagonist can be. - Support the Channel! www.patreon.com/iamadot Follow for Updates! x.com/iamadot64 iamadot64 - Games Disc...

Persona 5’s Phantom Mechanic
Переглядів 108 тис.7 місяців тому
Everything in Persona 5 matters... until it doesn't. Atlus' acclaimed RPG video game is a masterclass in game design. Every decision the player makes affects something else in the game. Except for one thing: the romantic relationships. In this video, we'll break down the romance paths Joker can take to see what Persona 5's relationships actually do on a mechanical level. - Support the Channel! ...
Why Are No Two Pikmin Games Alike?
Переглядів 32 тис.7 місяців тому
Pikmin is a series of contradictions. Nintendo’s underrated real-time strategy video game series has remained fundamentally the same since the first game released on the Gamecube in 2001. Despite that, every game in the series has a distinct feel not found in the other games? Let’s take a deep dive into how Pikmin’s small tweaks can lead to big changes. - Support the Channel! www.patreon.com/ia...

In my opinion, Edgeworth in Episode 3, was awesome. My favorite part was “OBJECTION! O-Objection! I object to the witness’s talkativeness!” And the judge just goes “Objection sustained” lmao 😭
Hatoful Boyfriend belongs in this category, though I cannot elaborate at all without spoiling anything.
leftist type of problem, real niggas use crack and thug that shit out
this video is so well made u made me cry dudeee
awesome video! love the editing, insta sub thanks to a random recommendation 💪

Genuinely The best video i have seen in a LONG TIME
i really want to watch this but i also want to play this now and don't want spoilers
Bea is love. Bea is life.
i think LuLu was the most forgettable Story-wise, she was the most minimal arc. But i guess you could say her character developmemt happened during her first two pilgramages that we were never part of
I'd argue Hollow Knight is another game in which the player isn't the main character. The main character is the Hollow Knight itself, the player is just a random knight who got far enough to aid the Hollow Knight in protecting Hollownest.
the orange cat is named Firestar
Ope, time for a replay. Just like that.
*walks in* (Ahem)... Rain world *leaves*
"Walking the dog, raising a family, any sort of role like that is just fine. Even if you don't have anything like that, even if all you can do is eat, shit, and sleep... even if you're stuck in bed sick, even if you spent your life with no connections and nothing remains of you... more than memories made in one's image, it's within the little, tiny fragments that remain, drifting off, where the value of a life lies." Words from a manga I really like. They felt appropriate to leave here.
This will never not be my favorite game.
this was a good video but i felt like the inclusion of the punishment structure was lacking connecting material to the rest of the discussion. although i understand why, as "games as punishment" is generally not a desired outcome for any individual game
great video, great visuals
Stumbled across this the day after leaving facebook. Thanks. I miss my friends but it is what it is
My favorite "not about you" game is The legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom. Now, you might be like "that is not true", well, the game is centered around saving ZELDA and sealing away GANONDORF, Link is just the one who does it. Actually, all mainline Zelda games are like this. Zelda's and Link's roles are reversed in echos of wisdom, but the story becomes about saving Link.
Im crying
Eels, honey.
Alan Wake isn't a horror nor an "anti-horror". It's just a bland third person shooter in a dimly lit environment that repeats itself ad nauseam.
What the hell is psychological horror!? No one ever explains without just simply describing normal horror. I'm out... Skip the intro.
One of my favorite games of all time. It just stuck with me.
Well fuck. Now I'm crying. Damn, y u do dis two me. Seriously though. A year or so back, I lost a friend who meant the world to me. He was there by my side for over 15 years, and he was robbed of a future at the age of 32 because of a cancer he had under 5% chance of actually contracting. Fate and luck weren't on his side, and I was left losing the friend who was the pillar for most of my other friendships. Soon, I became the outcast, and my friends drifted away. They moved on and left me behind. Yesterday, I looked up to my friend's picture and realized I couldn't remember his voice anymore. Not really. I have an idea of what it sounded like, but that's it. That hurt. I'm not an old guy, my memory is pretty solid, but life has no need for the sound of a voice, only the messages it delivered. It hurt, knowing I'd left a piece of him, this time. But your part at the end fucking broke me. "A best friend you can hold close forever, even if you drift physically apart. In a way, it doesn't really matter what happened yesterday or what tomorrow may bring. For tonight, we are together." I wish I had thought to say that to him. I may be an agnostic, but I do hope he can hear that somehow, some way. It was really beautiful.
This video goes so hard. The subject matter. The delivery. The visuals. When Mae’s eyes open at ~17:00 as the music swells? Literal chills and tears. Thank you for this experience, and thank you for the perspective.
i lost my bestfriend two years ago. when you said, for tonght, we are together, i teared up a bit. every night i had with her did matter, and it still matters. thank u for this video. <3
Am I the only one who was able to hang out with Greg and Bea for all 6 hangouts in one playthrough?
where the **** is rainworld
Here i am crying at 1 in the morning. Beautifully crafted video for a beautifully written game ❤️
Night in the Woods launched at a very significant time for me. I'd left two courses that didn't work out and was in my second year in Psychology. I like to think this game helped me graduate. And helped me reconnect with old friends. And opened new ideas for my story writing. For the longest time I resisted the modern setting, it was this game that gave me that push. It breaks my heart to this day that there will likely never be a sequel.
This video Rocks! Too bad the creator died, R.I.P. another game was gonna be made
My personal favourite for this trope is ultrakill, where you basically play as the villain
Children of the light
This game helped me process grief, grappling with being unable to return to college, unable to maintain real friendships with anyone who wasn't in physical vicinity. A lot of depression about who actually is interested in being a friend, and the realization that out of everyone I had regularly interacted with since middle school, through high school, and new friends in my first year at college, maybe 2 were still interested in keeping in touch once I couldn't regularly visit them myself. I had never understood how much I was scared of being alone until it was put into words.
i really loved this video. Great work.
This video came to me just when I'm going to go through with dropping out. I'm 2 days away from turning 20. Non of my family knows, my closest friends do. I am tired. I played this game when I was 15-16. I have to replay it.
It’s too early for me to be crying over a night in the woods video essay
It's disturbing I picked the same hangout order the 1st time I played
It's games like night in the woods and Celeste that mean more to me than any AAA game ever could. They are genuine and relatable works of art that stick with you. Great video!
I just experienced this irl
This video made me cry so much, the game made me cry so much. I couldn't relate more, this game spoke to me like no game ever did before.
greg was too unpredictable for me to choose him
Time and time again, I always get reminded with beautiful videos like this how much NITW means to me as it came out when I was a 18 but didn't know what I wanted to do in my life. You did an amazing job with this and thank you for making it.
😭
I mean… okami stars a wolf as the player character, and it didn’t get much attention when it first came out. But Okami is much more story based, and you don’t really know what the protagonist wants or know much about her. The other characters are much more focused on, just with you as the protagonist helping them. The whole reason the protagonist in Okami awakens is to help other characters. The protagonist is just a side character, in a way, because basically all the characters are blind to the fact that she is actually a god. They just kind of treat her like any other character, except being a bit surprised that she’s a white wolf.
i love this game and this is the best essay i have seen, good job!
There was a great article in the now-defunct gaming magazine Kill Screen about how the Courier isn't really the main character of the Fallout: New Vegas DLC questlines. All four are stories that the player enters, and resolves... but it's never about _you_. Honestly one of the best pieces of game writing I've ever read - it also did some extremely cool things with web typography - and I'm so sad it's not easily accessible anymore.
man life is beautiful. this game has always resonated deeply with me, and I think this celebration of just.. THINGS, events, many quite ordinary, is why. there is a lot of beauty in the mundane and in how we interact with other people and build relationships. I love that people are STILL talking about night in the woods. also fun fact I used 15:35 as my senior quote in high school lmao
