ROBERT C. MARTIN at NDC 2011 This just might be the thing that brings a mathematical rigor to TDD! If nothing else, it will certainly help programmers choose which tests to write next, and how best to make them pass. Transformations are like refactorings in that they are sim...

I'm a very mathematical person, so this kind of work would infuriate me as I always want to *understand* what the code does and why it works. Nevertheless, I will adopt this kind of thought process.

It is actually mathematical process. The process of regression actually. You gradually fit it by using new tests as higher order of derivatives. You find the best fitting algorithm which uses the least amount of resources. You can probably automate it to a degree.

These comments are like Saudi women telling Sebastian Vettel how to drive lmao Listen and learn, fools. Stop defending your ego via the nonsense your nobody college professor taught you. Read any of the books Bob has written, now ubiquitous among craftsmen in SE.

You totally wrecked an otherwise fairly good lecture by needlessly ripping braces out of working code and laying a completely unnecessary trap for the next programmer to come along! It is just plain idiotic and serves no purpose whatsoever especially when you arrogantly say "I don't like braces and I'm not going to protect you by leaving them in! Put your own damn braces in if you want them" as you selfishly broke the code by removing them.

@@anjanikumar745 perhaps because it does not fall inevitably, and it's not so easy unless you know quicksort already.

Most of those CS puzzles have practical prototypes, (e.g. the dining philosophers). What's the origin of the goat/cabbage, (or the politically incorrect cannibal/missionary analogue?

"River crossing problems first appear in the Propositiones ad Acuendos Juvenes, traditionally attributed to Alcuin of York (c. 732-804). The earliest extant manuscript is from the 9th century. Alcuin essentially gives three problems. The first is the problem of the three jealous husbands, the second is the problem of the wolf, the goat and the cabbage, and the third is the problem of the two adults and the two children, where the children weigh half as much as the adults." ... "By the end of the 19th century the problem was stated in the form of missionaries and cannibals, where the cannibals must never outnumber the missionaries. The earliest version of this form that we know of is due to Pocock who describes the problem as well known in 1891. This formulation has remained popular and has also been varied to explorers and natives. (Comment added at proof stage: we have since found a verson of the problem in Mittenzwey's Mathematische Kurzweil, which first appeared in 1879-but our edition is 1918.)"
