Mike Sheridan LIVE / Huset Residency / April 2024
HUSET XENON presented Mike Sheridan performing an experimental solo show, the result of his April artist-in-residence at XENON, on April 12th, 2024.
As one of the very few instrumentalists in the world, he plays the rare French Cristal Baschet euphonic sound-sculpture. This instrument consists of metal tones that vibrate when the mounted glass rods are stroked with wet hands. It was invented in the 1950s by the two Frenchmen Bernard and Francois Baschet as an acoustic complement to the groundbreaking musique concrète of that time.
Utilising the electric guitar (Sheridans first instrument besides the computer), the two distinctive aluminum instruments form an acoustic/electric counterpoint; the cristal euphone with its acoustic properties and the electric guitar through an array of effects and valve amplification.
Common for Mike's use of the instruments are an intuitive approach to create soundscapes rather than riffs and melodies; through metallic sustain, resonance and electric/acoustic distortions, the goal becomes to become able release energy and emotion in sound.
In this way, Mike Sheridan situates himself between tradition and personal expression. Here the audience was invited to join in for auditory explorations filled with associations and impressions.
Two short films was also part of the performance; Nicolai Howalt's F.U.N.G.I. (6 min) and an untitled work in progress (16 min) by Mike Sheridan.
The concerts are made possible with support from Statens Kunstfond.
