Shakespeare ATS 30 ($41 reel from Walmart) best catfish setup for the $$? Table top look
Terrible video!
How many fish have you caught with this rig?
Man can I buy some of these from you lol. I live in Huntsville and I will gladly buy these.
Iv thought about selling some. Shipping would be terrible if they had the foam on them. The noodles inner hole is not any standard size so it’s hard to pre make and sell with the buyer adding the foam
@@HookandBulletOutdoors I ended up making some of these the other day. If it was me going to sell them get foam that matches cut the pipe into sections and put a pipe cap on one end with the eye. Have the end user place the foam, other cap, and put a swivel to the eye. Cuts down on space in the box and cost. Could get a dozen easy into a medium size box that had some length.
Sacrelige speak my friend. The 5000 series are more of a bass sized reel. If you’re going after trophy sized catfish get a 7000 sized reel and drop in carbontex washers and move that handle over. If you’re not happy with that reel send it to me! 😂 Another option would be a Daiwa Sealine 47H or 50H. You’re not wrong the 5000 series is not designed to handle heavy lures and fish that size.
My point was that there is not a real difference from a factory 5000 to a factory 7000 other than line capacity. They don’t cast heavy baits well, they don’t have strong drag, they do last forever and have great parts support.
@@HookandBulletOutdoors I’ve been working on these reels for a long time the older models were really good and gears were made of metal. But don’t take it too hard I’m just messing with you 🤣. The good thing about these reels is that you can at least find after market parts and really sup them up. 🆙. I’m going to share a secret with you guys to make it cast as far as you can. Take the spool out. Now take the finest sandpaper that you can find like 2000 to 3000 grit and sand the side shafts on the spool. This removes any rough tool marks from the factory. Next take 0000 steel wool and polish those spool side shafts. Finally rub the spool shafts with metal polish like brass. Put a few drops of Remington gun oil. It has PTFE in it and make sure you oil your bearings. If your Abu comes with brass bushing, you will need to replace them with bearings. Now when you cast try for the country mile on your reel! And you really want to notch it up, remove the worm gear and line guide from your reel. Then you can really maximize your casting distance. But you will have to hand wind your line.
As for the drag make sure that your factory drag washers are dry. Don’t get oil or grease on them. I found out the hard way. You will notice a big difference.
i disagree about the Penn Squall being better. Especially when it comes to casting.
I find that the salt water reels handle casting heavy baits better in general.
Dude why not keep the dead bait
Man if you don't freeze it fresh right out of the water it's no good. Like if I froze that it would be rotten and not stay on the hook after it was thawed. To freeze shad you need to put it right out of the water into ice salt water slurry. That flash freezes it.
Good info 1 thought What if you put a elbow on the end. It will not dump water on you and it will not come apart. Just a thought. Give me your opinion. Never did pool jugs before trying to make a 1 time fix.
I’m sure it will work. I like keeping them as short as possible while still functioning as I want just because storage is always an issue with jug fishing. Definitely another way to do it tho, whatever works for you.
Excellent video. I had fun watching it. I cut their gills with game shears and throw them in the cooler. They are done and on ice.
Iv done that with salt water fish. Never tried with catfish. Old timers would cut the tail off big ones and let the bleed out that way. I throw most all fish over 10/12 lbs back so I never messed with bleeding them. I’ll try it out this year though.
Thanks
Yes sir.
How much weight do you think the trotline clips will take until failure.. im sure its much less than the energy needed to pull the jug around. But using them as on a diddy pole is different because once that pole is at it end its not moving.
I would say more than any catfish can muster. That’s a good idea for a short tho. I have a 600lb crane scale. I will test one.
Gread video! Any idea how to disable the auto engage? I have 4 of these reels for catfishing. Haven’t landed any big ones yet just dinks but I think these reels could handle some big fish.
Check in the comments I think someone linked a video on how to disable it. It can handle a petty hood fish. It’s drag may not be enough for the top 10% of catfish but for the most part it’s a good economic option.
enjoyed the video . good to see a husband and wife enjoying the outdoors together . GOD bless
Thank you. I’m trying to get better at video lol. We love hunting and fishing together. God bless you as well.
I enjoy watching you using jugs. I go weekly and absolutely love catching cats with my jugs. I also enjoy eating them. You may already have one but if not do a catch clean and cook for your viewers.

Thanks. Been trying to perfect the jugs for 20 years lol

Nice fish dude!
Thank ya. Scale said 36#
@@HookandBulletOutdoors Damn! Thats nice
Pickwick?
Yep.
Do the noodles ever come off the pvc?
I glue them on with wood glue. It’s easy to get off when I want to put new foam on but secure enough that iv never had one come off.
I glue them on with wood glue. The on there until I scrape them off. Which isn’t a huge chore.
Nice catch 🎣💥
Thanks 👍
Awesome videos, can you please do a tutorial on your method for quickly cleaning the fish?
Sure I will try. I know sometimes UA-cam will censor fish cleaning videos because of the blood.
I like mine better
I’m sure they are awesome. Everyone has their own way of doing it. I’m thankful there are many ways to skin a cat.
Good stuff y'all!👏😉
Thank you!!
Nice! You should lay off the coke though it's bad for the heart, less days on the water.
Allergies are awful. I should probably have scrapped that video and remade it.
😂
Jug on!!!!
Yes sir!!’ Been doing it all my life.
Where do you find the 110Lb coated main line? I can't seem to find anything but the larger diameter stuff online. Thanks
My affiliate link to the line is in the video description. I just checked and it is in stock at that link.
Wal-Mart or academy @@HookandBulletOutdoors
How deep were you lines? 25 feet?
Roughly. I vary depth depending on where I’m fishing. Some places I tie my jugs short for fishing shallow flats. Key with getting a good hook set with a jug is giving the fish room to swim down and set the hook.
@@HookandBulletOutdoors thanks. Looks like a good time.
Thanks for posting! Any suggestions on where I can find those 4" noodles? Thanks
Walmart is the only reasonable priced place I can find them. You can order them off Amazon but they are outrageous. I try to buy them up in the fall when pool noodles go on clearance.
@@HookandBulletOutdoors Thank you
I’ll give a try, appreciate your taking time making the video, thanx man 🤘
Why are you just fishing with one hook on a jug instead of max limit of 5? If you do fish with 3,4 or 5 hooks might make a video on how you do it. Your depths good. I've done a lot of jugging myself but just more hooks. Like your idea though.
Honestly it’s just for storage and ease of use. The one hook at the end helps me keep it less cluttered and reduces tangles. I use double rigs on rod and reel and it is effective and covering multiple depth ranges. When I jug fish I’m usually marking fish and dropping the bait on their head. Definitely a good idea tho.
When you make a cast, does the force of the cast cause the free spool lever to disengage because of the inertia on the handle? That seemed to be my issue so I removed that component in mine so the handle can't turn on the anti reverse.
It does. That’s my biggest complaint. I didn’t think about removing the components that trigger that. Thank you for the idea. I will definitely be doing that. I really don’t know why anyone makes a handle engagement system for a reel that doesn’t have a balanced reel handle.
@@HookandBulletOutdoors the mechanism I removed is located under the main gear. It looks like a star with 4 points. I removed that and the spring underneath it. I found other ways to do this, but they are more destructive and those modifications are permanent.
Looks like a sturdy drive line. How much is the maximum drag tension? I may get these to replace my elCheapo Abu reels.
Max drag appears to be 15 lbs. Plenty to do the job on a big catfish. I can’t complain about the reel. Casts good with braid. If you decide to pick up one please use my affiliate link in the description. Won’t cost you any extra but the channel will get a little commission off the sale.
Nice video but I thought ya shouldn't eat fish from Tennessee river
I’ve hear that about the Ohio and perhaps around the big industry areas on the TN but where I fish it’s clean clear water. I’ll trust it over the poop ponds store bought catfish comes out of.
That is in the Knoxville area where all the factories were

After watching this and your jugging video I have got to redo my jugs to get them deeper:-) thanks for sharing the info!
Awesome. Again thanks for the kind words. A few ideas for your new jugs. Depth is dependent on your lake. I fish deep drops/ ledges so I put mine at a depth they will sit on the slope but not the bottom of the drop. I always pay attention to my sonar, it will tell ya what depth range your fish are in. Hope you snatch some lips.
@@HookandBulletOutdoors I fish Smith Mountain Lake and Buggs Island, I have plenty ledges to try! 😊
That's some pretty Blues! Yum:-)
Great table fair. Farm raised catfish really gives the wild caught a bad reputation.
Good stuff 👏 new sub 😊
I appreciate the sub and kind words!!
The name of the rig is the high low rig it is popularly used in saltwater fishing off docks
Iv done some salt fishing but I don’t live near the salt so not a bunch. That’s cool and o can see it’s effectiveness in that situation. I use it to drag baits and not stay hung up all the time.
Renamed Tidewaters.
I threw the one's in the trash
That happens. Iv thrown some pretty expensive reels in the trash also. I had a Shimano that ruined me on Shimano reels.
Rig has actually been around several years. My granddad taught me how to tie it when I was a kid and I’m in my 50’s now. Just shows you’re thinking. Good job.
Thank you for the kind words. My grandfather started me catfishing. He is my inspiration for a lot of what I try on the water. Has this rig been effective for you over the years? It works great in the Tennessee River for me.
Great video do one on how you trow a cast net for bait
Will do. Thanks for the suggestion!! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Hello, thanks for the video. I have made mine similar to yours for years until I saw this design in the linked video. The ones that I have made now are much easier to unwind and to re stow once you’re done fishing . It also has the capability to vary your depth. Check out the video and let me know your thoughts . You tube - Fish4Fun, go to playlist, album - things I do for fun. , scroll to jugging for catfish. Not my video but you can tell that Jerry is not a novice . ua-cam.com/video/QruZCFhG0Mc/v-deo.html
I make mine the same way good job. You said you fish at Pickwick alot that's my fishing spot I live 15 miles from there. Maybe I'll see you there tkx
Thanks. I wish I was 15 min away. It’s an hour and a half drive for me but the fishing is so much better compared to the tenn Tom. I live 1/4 mile from it and choose to drive to pickwick to fish. It’s getting time for the lake to be much less crowded hope to see ya out there.
Is your float under or on top of the water?
The float is under water. Its purpose is to hold the bait off the bottom, its generally a more effective bait presentation and helps with getting snagged so much. You will have to judge how big of a float you will need to hold up your bait and hook. It tends to take a good size float for a large bait. I usually use a 2 oz sinker but that depends on condition.
What about using a large weight that the fish can't easily swim away with? Wouldn't that help hook up?
I have used larger weights and it tends to make it look like your getting bit in chop. I don’t believe, but haven’t tested it, that even 8 oz of weight would impart enough resistance to have a hook set using a 5/0 hook on a catfishs meaty mouth.
How do you keep the bait suspended? Looks like the hook is on the end of you rig. Let me know, thanks.
Great question! You have to adjust your jugs for the water depth your fishing to keep them off the bottom. I make some deep ones and some shallow ones but you can also tie a couple half hitches around the jug with the line to shorten up a long jug. If you fish the same area a lot it’s easiest to tailor your jugs to the depth you usually fish.
Awesome video thanks for sharing
Have one of these that I use for surf fishing and distance catfishing (100+ yds) heavy reel so I paired it with a heavy 12 ft rod. Zero complaints. Over 6 months in
I respooled with 50# braid and it will send a bait. I had a hard time casting with the 30lb mono.
Hi how is this reel I am thinking about getting one thanks
Iv been using it. With braid it casts heavy catfish rigs great. It’s drag is not very strong but for the money it does the job. I use 50Lb braid for main line.
Ok great thanks for your time and help 🐟
What type of glue you use.
I use gorilla wood glue.
I've got four ats30, had for three years. I cought some big 30 lbs, Reds , 50 lbs. Ray's, lots of small sharks there good reels. I converted them to a manual on and off release. no more engaging while casting.
Is there a video on this conversion? That’s only thing I don’t like about ot
How is this conversion done? I really like this reel but this makes it hard for me to use for bank fishing
