I adopted my granddaughter so iam the only listed parent on birth certificate. How will that work when it asks about second parent when there isn't one?
The question under "tell us about your parents". If the parents are legally married but separated do you answer married or not? The separated option is only available when the parent is providing the information.
How do you answer the question referring to "tell us about your parents" if the parents are legally married but separated? The only option is married or not married?
Hey I’m stuck on the student finances part, what form would i find that information the 1040 or 1098-T?
Ok I am the parent and I am filling out my child's fafsa so when I log in I'm saying filling out as a parent so is there any walk through as a parent not as a student
My son qualifies to file his FAFSA as an independent for his grad school. For some reason he is unable to enter any personal finance questions such as bank accounts. The area is grayed out and inaccessible. He submitted a help ticket 3 weeks ago and it has been crickets.Any ideas how this may have happened?
How do know if you were approved
Do I need to include 401k and IRA accounts as assets ?
Is there a certain minimum amount of non-retirement assets or income whereby it would be a waste of time to fill out the FAFSA? For example, if your assets are over X millions or if parent's income is over $350K/year? I realize that things may change if you have multiple kids in college but just wanted to know at what point does it become pointless to go through this process. Thanks.
if you receive federal benefits, you dont have to put your parents finances? Are you able to just submit it?
This was very helpful and clear. Thank you very much for putting it together!
Thank you for the step by step walkthrough, it is a great help especially for those who have not knowledge on how to complete this form. Greatly appreciated
If I cannot finish it in one sitting will it save? Or does it have to be completed in one sitting?
In the student assest section as a peraon who dosent work with not being involved in any of the quuestions will it just be 0 0 0
He didn’t do it right because at the end it’s supposed to say Congratulations. There’s something he didn’t do.
He’s walking thru a demo, he’s not actually applying.
Yoo please reply me I can’t access the signature aspect and seems others have been having the exact problem
My dad is having trouble with the signature part since him and my mom fail jointly every time my dad puts my mom Information in and try continuing there a red box that pops up we’ve tried calling help hotline but it was a no go so idk what to do now
Unfortunately, this is a technical problem with the FAFSA. You might try to call Federal Student Aid for help with next steps. studentaid.gov/help-center/contact
Thank you. For students filing the paper-based application and mailing it with post office, do they still need to create an FSA ID number?
Yes, students should still create an FSA ID because after the paper FAFSA is processed, they will manage the FAFSA and federal student aid benefits on studentaid.gov, which requires an FSA ID to login.
@@collegemoneymethod Thank you for prompt reply. So students should create FSA ID for future logins to access their accounts on studentaid.gov. What about parents? Do they also need FSA ID to login and access their child's account in future? Thank you again for your help.
Very clear and thorough. Thank you for breaking things down and explaining why they ask certain financial questions because it helps us fill out knowledgeably.
You are so welcome!
So single parent filing with foreign taxes and other the other parent know about is unknown. Then does the IRS retrieval shows zero itself? And what to fill up about the other parent? In short how not to get the form rejected in these cases?
I have a question on checking/savings totals. I am on my 85 yo fathers accounts to help him pay his bills, but its his money that he gets deposits from his social security and his pensions. Do I include those amounts in my total?
No, you would not have to claim that if it's a joint account for purposes of helping your father with his finances.
What if I accidentally clicked on yes to only apply for a direct unsubsidized loan. Will I be able to change it? What do I do?
wait until the form has been processed and you *may* be able to change it.
Do both parents need to be invited and do both parents need to fill out the form if they are married and file joint?
No, if parents file taxes "Married filing jointly" then only one parent needs to be invited and contribute to the FAFSA.
Thank you for your explanation! In the foreign income exclusion section: if the number is negative, then can I put a minus? or just put zero? ex). - 50000
You're welcome. You should put the positive amount of the foreign income exclusion.
Thank you @@collegemoneymethod
what if i dont have parents or spouse ? whos gonna be my contributor?
Why am I not seeing the parent asset questions on mine? Please help???
There are three reasons why a parent may not have to answer the parent asset questions. More information can be found here: www.collegemoneymethod.com/new-paths-to-excluding-parent-assets-from-eligibility-calculation/
Hey, all my credentials are correct but the direct data exchange page isn’t popping up for me. Any solutions?
I am a student made less to $2K / year so I did not file the tax returns but I have open Roth IRA for the income I made from working. Do I need to include that Roth IRA balance in "Current Net Worth of Investments, Including Real Estate" Reply
No need
No, a contributor never includes balances or amounts in any qualified/retirement account.
if you haven't filed 2022 IRS Form 1040 or 1040-NR?,do you click no?because i havent even been in the work force and im a senior in hs

Excellent - very clear. TY
Glad it was helpful!
your videos are very informative. please do a video on how to fill FAFSA form for someone who does not have any parent
How do you edit the form after you’ve submitted ? Is there a way to edit it before fafsa can determine the amount of money you’ll be receiving? Their new website made this so confusing for me
How does the contributor go from using their cell phone to using a desktop to input their infomation
I am really confused with the new FAFSA. Separate not legally divorced. Filed 22 as married. salary >150K Income 2023 (due to separation) is in the 30's with a second child applying to college. Wont the taxes for 22 affect the SAI? How to I report this on the new FAFSA? please help
if i was born and raised in texas what do i put for my date the student became a legal resident of texas?? do i put my birthday?
What happens if you accidentally clicked yes for the unsubsidized loan only because I didn’t know what it meant. And finalized it 😓
I’m pretty sure you can edit and resubmit like previous years
So I made an account for both my mom and I. Does it matter which account I do my fafsa form on or do I have to fill out the form on both accounts?
If Im a citizen in california do I still fill out the legal residence date question?
I was loggin in to my parent account but I dont see anything to sign, When I did my section it also have my parent section in there so I just sign 1 time, it not look like your. What can I do right now? I'm so confused.
If you are a returning student should you still choose a "new form" or "Edit existing form"?
New form
With the delay in 2024-25 Fafsa, do parent have a choice of using 2023 T/R instead of 2022 T/R?
I didn't see where you would report Veteran's Compensation or SSDI on the form. Do you know how that income will be reported?

Hello i am 35 years olds starting college in july i am waiting for the 24-25 fasta to come out.I am married but have been separated for 7 years.I am not legally separated due to how much it cost I live in texas.but we have been living in different households since 2016 so my question is what documentations would i need to provide to them to prove that we are separated.since we are not legally divorced.
What if students don’t have a tax return?
My students aunt has been buying the savings bonds for them since birth. Do they report that as a student asset?
Do both parents have to create their own FAFSA I'd or just one?
From my understanding, only one is needed. Two can be created in case the other parent wants to enter information too. Unless the parent is undocumented, they do not create an FSA ID
Hello, I been separated for 6 years. Divorce is in court process. I have been filling as head of household. I know I am the only one required to fill fafsa because my daughter has been living with me since then. So the question is what status do I fill? Since I been separated but not legally divorced. Thank you for all your help.
If your divorce is not legally finalized at the time of application, you would choose separated.
@@collegemoneymethod I was told if is not finalize I have to put married since I don’t have a proof of divorce yet. Hopping is not true. Please advise. Thank you for your quick response.
This is not the case. I have been in trainings directly with Federal Student Aid. If you are separated, you will choose separated, and be the sole parent contributor to the FAFSA if you provide your daughter's greater financial support in the 12 months prior to application.
If you didn't consent and submitted the fafsa do u have a chance to correct that decision?
How does a contributor go from their cell phone to a desktop to enter their information?
So if you do own a farm, but have a family size of 9 and all seven kids are on Medicaid and one on WIC, will you be exempt from reporting assests?
Yes, according to the new FAFSA rules, you would be exempt for reporting any parent assets, including your farm.
I have a unique case where my son lives and studies in the US IN his senior year so going to apply for fall 2024. I am a non-US citizen living overseas . How will I create the FSA ID?
Is your son a US citizen or have status? That will allow him to apply for Federal Student Aid with the FAFSA. See this link : studentaid.gov/understand-aid/eligibility/requirements/non-us-citizens The process to create an FSA ID without a social security number has yet to be announced by the Department of Education.
