SILENT NIGHT Guitar Tutorial | Beautiful fingerpicking arrangement
In today's Silent Night Guitar Tutorial I have broken down my own arrangement of the classic, beautiful, Christmas song.
🎸 PREMIUM PDF (tab, chords, lyrics) - jobywaterguitartuition.com/product/silent-night-arr-by-jo-bywater-pdf/
I have arranged the song for the Key of C so we can use some nice resonating open chords - C/G, G, F/G, Am7 & C. The slash chords mean we can alternate the bass notes without interfering too much with the melody. The aim here was to create an open, ringing, flowing song that embodies the lullaby qualities that characterise the song.
I have broken this down section by section and included tab. There are chord boxes at the beginning so you can see an overview of the chord shapes and aim to keep your fingers in these positions to maintain the ringing feel.
There is a play-through at the end complete with animated tab and a straight on view of the guitar.
Silent Night is a stunning, gentle Christmas song that is an absolute joy to play on guitar.
Enjoy!

☕️ QUESTION: WHAT VIDEO WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO MAKE ON THIS CHANNEL?
I have played a variety of guitar styles since I was inspired by Nirvana and GnR in the 90s. I have been involved in countless bands and projects over the years and have been teaching guitar since 2002 and full time since 2012. I work with and have worked with a vast range of learners face to face and online. Online is an excellent and very effective way to learn guitar if you have the right teacher.

    Sorry - I bought one, and I am not impressed at all. The ART system is really stiff, so it doesn't deform to the string profile very well unless you apply a considerable amount of pressure. If you squeeze it with your fingers you can see the pressure needed to fully reform the profile - it's way too much! I expected it to be quite easy to deform - it isn't. I have a Lowden with a 16" profile. I'm finding 50% of the time when applying the capo I have to apply more pressure because the high and low E strings aren't getting held down properly and buzz. That's not great because I have to start playing to find out if the capo is doing its job. I never have this problem with a correct radius Shubb - I can tell immediately if it's applied correctly before playing, and can set the tension perfectly and set and remove it easily without affecting that tension. In summary - is it worth twice the cost of a Shubb? Absolutely no way!

    The way I remember chord recipes, you just need to know about thirds, there are 2 types of thirds, a major third (M) and a minor third (m). A major chord will be a major third, followed by a minor third (Mm), a minor chord will be a minor third, followed by a major third (mM), a diminished chord will be a minor third, followed by another minor third (mm), and an augmented chord will be a major third, followed by another major third (MM). The way I count through chromatic scale, if my thumb is root note, my little finger will be the major third, and my ring finger, the minor third.

    • @jobywaterguitartuition
      @jobywaterguitartuition 2 дні тому

      Cheers for sharing 😊 You’re right it is about the different thirds stacked to create the variety of chord qualities. This lesson is a bit prior to that level. Not everyone understands thirds and it can get terminology heavy. Once people have some foundations in place moving onto 3rds combinations is the next step 👍😊🎸

    Great review, thanks! I've been using the Polytune for about a year and really like it. It's fast and accurate. Not cheap, but worth it. And the clip opens wide enough to fit on the headstock of a classical guitar which tends to be thicker.

  • @PeterWasted
    @PeterWasted 2 дні тому

    I find most headstock tuners break quite quickly. Snarks seem to be one of the worst. Not polytunes though. I have three and they are all quite old and still going strong. I don't find the polytune function that useful for me so I bought a Unitune recently and it does everything I want for a fair be less money. One thing I have found with all headstock tuners: They are not ideal for setting intonation on electric guitars. Sometimes they work but I suspect there are resonant frequencies generated at the headstock end when fretting at twelfth fret that muddy the signal.

      I have tried one of those a couple of years ago, a friend had got one she was really pleased with it! I favour the Perterson Stroboclip, similar thing really but not polyphonic. I found myself getting confused by it, no idea why but eventually I found it irritating 😂. When we go to our holiday home (static caravan) I use either the Boss tuner app or another strobe app that I got fed up of before I got the Boss app 😂 It’s all down to personal preference really, we’re all different aren’t we!

      @DarrellW_UK absolutely! Not heard of the Stroboclip, will go take a look. I’ve been using my Boos foot pedal but wanted a clip tuner. One of my students has the Polytune and I wanted to try it. I like how sensitive it is. I’d been using the Fender app which is great but not always as accurate as a tuner that pics up on vibration. I’m really happy with this one and no confusion from external noise 😊🎧

    Interesting list, I use a few of those in your list there are a couple of exceptions: I don’t use a Pedal tuner, I don’t need one but my favourite tuner is a Peterson Stroboclip, it’s a strobe tuner and is really accurate. I don’t use Guitar Pro, but I’ve got 3 apps that work well for me, Moises - for separating tracks out, Chord AI - it works out chords from Audio input and will transpose them to any key, also it can give you TAB. Tux guitar, a Linux or multi platform App that gives you TAB editing tools and can transpose them plus add lyrics. I don’t use the Positive Grid amp, I got a Blackstar BEAM not long after it came out, does most of the stuff the Spark does and is very compact. Finally the Cooper stand, I have a metal version of it, don’t need it to be portable.

      Great! There’s a couple of things on your list for me to go do some reading on. I’ve heard of chord ai. It sounds great! Cheers for sharing those. There’s so much decent gear and apps around 😃

    Some great ideas here Jo, that amp and it’s app looks amazing! Modern technology really is something, I wasn’t aware something like that existed (I need to get out more!).

      Thanks 👌 glad you like the vid. The amp is great. Really. For the price too. I was recommended it a few years ago and have used it a lot. You’re right technology is fantastic. I couldn’t quite believe this when I first saw it 😆

    Hey there! It's been a minute. Good lesson, Again. I find as I was geting into it, that this is something I already know. And I have to take this a a good sign. So what's the problem then? It's notes on the fretboard. This is essential and I have just not wanted to go there. And it really just comes down to practice and discipline. Which you, and the greats, obviously have.

    • @jobywaterguitartuition

      Thank you very much 👍😊 how are you getting on? It’s true. All of the above. It only becomes easier when you’re in a place when you’re interested in it and then it’s about repetition. I was not interested in theory for years when I started playing guitar. Only riffs and pedals. Once I got interested though it became mind blowing and REALLY useful! 🎸😊

      @@jobywaterguitartuition What's cool here, is there is a point in your recent triads lesson, that you actually pause and emphasize that knowing the fretboard is essential. And I really think - for me - that I need somebody to practice with. Somebody who is better and can put up with me. I THINK THAT MAY APPLY TO LIFE TOO! My best to you and yours this holiday season.

      Diminished 5th chord is a chord with a b3 and a b5 in it. If possible could you explain what aspect of it you didn’t understand so I can better help you?

      when teachers explain the theory of music no one says about diminished, according your scheme I constructed only one BDF diminished chord. Am I right? Very sorry I am not native speaker, it's the reason. I try not bother you again.God bless you. Thanks a lot

    • @jobywaterguitartuition
      @jobywaterguitartuition 11 днів тому

      @Манзура-с2ф that’s right. There’s only one diminished chord in a major key. The vii chord in C Major is the B diminished chord. People also call the diminished chord a ‘minor b5’. Have you heard that before? I’m happy to answer your questions it’s just not always easy with only a bit of information about what you know. I hope this helps a bit?
