5 paddles Braca 4, Flow MS3, Jantex Gamma, Braca 11 and Epic Mid Twist. I look at the catch and exit portion of each paddle and discuss the pros and cons. All great paddles. I am currently working with Flow kayaks who make the MS range (1,2,3) although I'm not obligated to use the paddle in races it is a sponsored paddle. This Video is usable for Surfski, and multi-sport paddlers, K1 paddlers t...

Wind and Swell Downwind on a Fenn Elite S surf ski
Переглядів 1834 місяці тому
A downwind run with wind and swell, Both wind and swell were coming over the left shoulder, meaning the speed was to the right but the direction was left. Still lots to learn in these conditions but here's how I did it. Northerly wind was a bit inconsistent, gusty and never really knows what it's doing in chch. We had to punch out into a small surf and water temp was around 9 degrees. For more ...

How about the shaft stiffness, 19k? And do you like the metal connector or plastic
Yeah 19k seems good 👍 happy with the plastic adjustment works fine and harder to accidentally knock, draw back is the angle indications have 10 degree intervals where as the metal ones have 5 degrees intervals. But again I don’t have a problem getting my angle right with the plastic adjuster. 👍 thanks for commenting
I tried that... but I have a chronic pain condition that has no tolerance for the legs being involved😢
Bugger yea always work within your own limitations.
Awesome
It would be interesting to compare the Epic mid twist with the Braca VIII. I have not really found much info on the Braca VIII, just that it has quite a bit of twist.
Yeah the epic mid twist has a fixed size of 700 in combination with a stiffer paddle shaft, where as the braca 11 will come in a range of sizes. I’ve tried both, both work on Similar principles of big catch clean exit (twist) I feel the braca has a bit more flexibility in the stroke path than the epic.
Thanks for the compassion. Is the Epic midtwist their new model of paddle? Would you use this paddle in surf conditions?
Yep it’s their latest paddle. Haven’t tried it in the surf would be interesting to see how it behaves through white water. Never had any issues with using a flat water blade in the surf however 👍 Fred and rooster like theirs also has an oval shaft for hand placement and is stiff.
Love this exercise as it really helps with the rotation.
Thanks 🙏 Think the weighted rotation with the sling instead of the band is even better 👍
@@oceanskicanterbury Perhaps another vid?

Is this a harness/rope set up you can purchase or a hack from another use?
Hi, nelo sell something you can purchase I think. here I’ve used a GoPro chest mount strap and a gym strength band. 👍
@@oceanskicanterbury Thank you. :)
The main section of the Columbia that folks do downwinders on is well over 100 miles long and conditions can vary over that length on any given day. I suppose on smaller days, "short period chop" is not inaccurate. Usually the waves are pretty well lined up, although there are a few notable short sections where there can be significant cross wave action (the prelude to Swell City, and some of the river bends) But on bigger wind/wave days the waves can get ocean swell size and stretch out the period quite nicely over a number of river stretches. When Swell City is running big, the waves still tend to be fairly close together and can get quite steep. You really need to check it out for yourself!
Hey thanks for that, thats the sort of info I was looking for. Was thinking of going coming over this year but boat hire was an issue
@@oceanskicanterbury I understand about getting a surfski - particularly the one you really prefer. For future reference, the Gorge Champs website has kept a link to a google spreadsheet for listing locals with boats (the sheet was created by a paddler from Bellingham, Washington) available as well as a tab for paddlers who are looking for surfskis and outriggers to rent. The race is particularly popular for outriggers now and getting canoes for everyone who wants them is a real challenge. But there were a number of local surfskis available that did not get used. Usually there are so many folks (some with trailers) going to the race from Bellingham that burrowing a local boat and getting it to the Gorge is not a big problem. If money is an issue (there is a bit of range in what some folks want to charge) I don't see why you could not at least try to negotiate a deal where you possibly help the boat owner out if they think they ever want visit your part of the world...
@@paulreavley5900thanks for the info 👍
@@oceanskicanterbury Sorry to hear about boat hire issues. Outriggers are really coming in big numbers to the Gorge race now and they have a big problem finding an OC for everyone. The Gorge Champs' website includes a link to a google spreadsheet for renting surfskis and OCs that locals from my town - Bellingham, WA have been using for several years now. It has a tab for available boats and a tab for paddlers looking for boats. I'm pretty sure not all of the surfskis on the list were taken this year. But I guess you also have to see one that you would be happy with.
I find your exercizes very useful and smart. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for that ✌️
I had a similar situation quite a few years back. Using big bladed Bratcha 2 from South Africa gave me more stability and confidence in really bumpy water, compared to my Bratcha 1, which was a few cm shorter and maybe a cm narrower. However, I found that sticking with the smaller blade size, the body soon adapted and it didn't take long to feel just as comfortable using that instead of the bigger blades.
Big blades B1 and B2 😳where they for surf ski?
@@oceanskicanterbury I was doing a lot of lifesaving surfski races, so the B2 was my round-the-cans sprint blade, and the smaller B1 for distance. Now I'm getting older (57) so I'm finding the need to use smaller blades!
Woooowww ! I'll put my surfski on my wagon car and i'll drive till your places !!!😂😂 It's only from side of the world to the opposite one
Ha nice
Nice! I agree, a real fun spot on an ocean ski. Good speeds!!
Yeah love a good Scarborough wave session ✌️
Great idea ! I'll try it for sure !!!
Cool let me know how it goes 👍
Cool. Had a seal do that once and it scared me just for a second. Thought it was a great white.
Ha nice 👍
You truly had a great day!
Cheers !
It's my dream... maybe more interesting than winning a race...
Yeah sometimes just being out there is all you need
I use a Braca IV paddle when paddling in a K1, but have changed to a Braca XI (Van Dusen) for my surf ski because it has a better catch in the rough and extra reinforcement for bracing etc. I take a slightly different approach dependent on the conditions and distance to be covered, changing the length of the shaft rather than blade area. Mine is a 760 and in lighter conditions or shorter distances I use a longer shaft (218cm) and when conditions are bad and/or I’m paddling a longer distance, I shorten the shaft to about 214cm. I find that altering the shaft length allows me to benefit from the larger blade for both drive and stability.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Twisted blade may suit, braca xl, jantex gamma, epic mid twist . Concrete catch, easy release power and efficiency with 700 cm size
Yeah they seem pretty popular now I actually suggest these to most people I just haven’t changed myself yet 😅
This video is awesome
Yeah pretty sweet day out
Sea drift?
Hi are you asking how to allow for drift? Point your ski into the drift 👍
Which surfski did you use in this video?
Using a FENN Elite S in the video
Well done!
No. That is wayyyyyyy to hard.
Seems excessive
Its for lifeguards/lifesaving sport
So is backflipping anything that can be backflipped. Everything isn't about practicality... People do things because they're fun
:o I never seen that before ✨
This is great! I'm looking at a spec ski for my rather frequent surf sessions, which I now surf on an ocean ski. Can you compare spec vs ocean ski, downwind? 😀
Hi Josue. Ocean skis typically a bit more maneuverable in the chop but if you have to punch through any surf breaks bigger than a few ft we preferr using a spec ski. Similar skill set just not as comfortable to sit on for long periods
@@oceanskicanterbury Thanks for your suggestions 😊 I try to refrain from punching through white water on my ocean ski, either by choosing surf breaks which have a non breaking channel, or reducing speed when approaching a steep wave. But reducing speed makes a ski unstable, increases effort to bring it up back to speed, and there's the risk of being catapulted backwards😬 So, I avoid breakers most of the time if there's no channel. I don't go for long paddles on the ocean ski, I prefer to surf. If no waves, very rarely will I do a traditional downwind with upwind taxi. Mostly, I'd go upwind a few km, turn back downwind, rest and repeat. I think that based on your suggestions, a spec ski could open more surfing spots for me. Thanks again ‼️
