When you can play all eight rhythms, go to level two: combinations of two different two-beat patterns, for example rhythm 1 and 3.

Swing vs straight beat

Shows the difference between a swung beat and a straight beat
Really dumb question from a bass player. How would a drummer (or any other musician) describe the difference between these two examples other than one is a straight beat and the other is swung? Would you just say the feel is different? There is no difference in the notation between the two styles and I just assumed you'd note the eighth and quarter notes differently between these two examples. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

dude, most explanations for swing is just WAYYYYYY to complicated!!! thank you for this simple explanation!!! the other tutorials are like going into first grade math class and having to do calculus. no, you have to have the simple first!!! ive actually been needing to figure out swing for awhile, but i havent been able to, but this is super helpful for making swing music!! thank you!!

Waltz Rhythm is like Straight Rhythm, but there’s only 3 beats in each measure.

Most India beats are swing beats. I was trying to program my native Indian beat in DAW but it wasn't sounding good and my friend suggested to read about shuffle/swing beats.

@@SuperPussyFinger Think of the "one beat" as striking the hi hat.. "two" as tapping the hi hat... The "and beat" as closing the high hat as an accent... Does that help?
@@HammerGruvin1 - Thank you for your earnest comment. Regrettably, however, I am unable to intuitively recognize a swing rhythm. I’ve been searching for an explanation that I can follow, to no avail. In the examples used in this video, I hear different kinds of confusing beats for both the straight and the swing rhythms. I feel like I need a simpler, more straightforward example. I don’t know what a hi-hat is, quite honestly. You seem to have appreciated this video, perhaps because straightforward explanations are hard to come by. I’ve been pulling my hair out, and it’s maddening.

@@SuperPussyFinger I know this is old, but think triplets. First eighth note in straight rhythm would have the duration of two eighth notes in a triplet. The second eighth note in straight rhythm would have the duration of one eighth note in a triplet.
People that don’t just notate swung rhythms as triplets or dotted 8th followed by 16th notes.....
That's not the same! Think of Swing like a spectrum. 50% is straight eighths 66% is triplets 75% is dotted 8th with 16th You can have swing anywhere in between!
