BIG STEAM IN SOUTH AFRICA 2024 DE BRUG TO BLOEMFONTEIN - 20th July 2024
Please note: Videos are not being posted in calendar order.
There was a slow start to our day's activities on Saturday, 20th July 2024. Issues with watering the loco gave us time for a morning coffee around the pool in Bloemfontein. So, it wasn't all bad!
Once we 'hit the road' it was a very successful afternoon! 25NC No. 3437 does the honour's again with some nice photo runs between De Brug and Bloemfontein.

J 611 - Shenandoah Valley Limited - Sunday, 22nd October 2023

The third day chasing J 611 and it's another beauty! What a stylish locomotive it is. By now we feel like 'locals' and know where we are going. The challenge is the number of fellow railfans on the roads, so we chose specific locations in advance to ensure that we got to the spots in plenty of time. The countryside in Virginia is beautiful with rolling green hills and beautiful autumn colours. ...

@roundtheworldinasteamyhaze2942 The second day of our adventure with J 611 is almost perfect! The sun makes a sustained appearance and 611 is simply stunning. It's 'one of those days' where you just had to be there! Hopefully this video conveys the vibe.

For five weekends in October and November 2023, Norfolk & Western J Class No. 611 hauled the Shenandoah Valley Limited excursion train, twice a day each Friday and Saturday and Sunday between Goshen and Staunton in Virginia. J 611 is arguably the world's most stylish operational steam locomotive. The dates of these excursions coincided with my visit to the U.S.A. Naturally, the opportunity to s...

Following the success of the FarRail tour to South Africa in June 2023 another tour was organised by Bernd Seiler for July 2024, this time featuring both 25NC and 15F class locomotives on the Bloemfontein to Kimberley and Bloemfontein to Bethlehem lines plus narrow gauge steam (two foot gauge) at Sandstone Estates. The first day of steam was spent between Bloemfontein and Petrusburg with 25NC 3437
BIG BOY ROAD TRIP DAY FIFTEEN- 14th July 2024 - ROSEVILLE DEPARTURE
Переглядів 22521 годину тому
Unfortunately, the final day of the road trip didn't go exactly to plan! The 14th July was the day 4014 departed from Roseville at the start of its return journey to Cheyenne, however, it was also the date of my departure for South Africa for a FarRail steam charter (which had been organised prior to the release of the Big Boy tour information). As such I only had the morning available for the ...

To celebrate the return to service of the preserved Tait train (Electric Suburban Train), Steamrail Victoria operated a series of special trains on Sunday, 3 July 2022. The first train/s consisting of the four-car Tait train and a steam-hauled excursion train ran parallel from North Melbourne station to Box Hill, with both trains continuing on to Ringwood. This video, filmed from the steam-haul...
BIG BOY ROAD TRIP DAY TWELVE 11th July 2024 - Portola to Roseville
Переглядів 130День тому
Big Boy 4014 ventures down the Feather River Canyon on the final day of its journey to Roseville. As expected, huge crowds have gathered to experience this majestic scene. To complicate matters, the two-lane road is undergoing extensive road works which hamper the movement of traffic through the canyon. So, Neato and I have chosen two prime locations to view the spectacle. To complicate matters...
BIG BOY ROAD TRIP DAY TEN 9th July 2024 - Winnemucca to Portola
Переглядів 40621 день тому
The tenth day of the Big Boy Road Trip provides us with limited photographic opportunities, principally because of the remote countryside that the train travels through. Departing from Winnemucca approximately one hour ahead of the train, we drive along a gravel road to Jungo, then proceed cross-country south-west to the interstate while the train heads north-west to Gerlach. Eventually, travel...
BIG BOY ROAD TRIP DAY NINE - 8th July 2024 - Elko to Winnemucca
Переглядів 19721 день тому
After the rest day at Elko, and our side trip to the Nevada Northern Railway, 4014 heads further west to Winnemucca. For much of the journey the railroad follows the Humboldt River, which creates a ribbon of green through the desert. It's another fabulous day!

Back on the road again, heading west, after the rest day excursion to Ogden and Promontory Summit, 4014 skirts the southern shores of the Great Salt Lake and heads for Elko in Nevada. It's an eventful trip through contrasting scenery. The highlight is self-explanatory, as you will see! Overall, it was an excellent day!
BIG BOY ROAD TRIP DAY FIVE 4th July 2024 - Evanston to Salt Lake City
Переглядів 23428 днів тому
Day five of the Big Boy Road Trip and the action is heating up! For almost the first time, the scenery is staking a claim to outdo the impressiveness of 4014. To start the day, we have the climb up to Wasatch, which is followed by the descent through Echo and Webber Canyons. It's the 4th July public holiday and the road is crowded with railfans and curious locals out to see the Big Boy. There's...

Following the rest day at Rock Springs, the chase recommences as the train travels from Rock Springs to Evanston. The day begins with regular service action at Rock Springs prior to 4014s departure. More action takes place at Green River and Granger before the train arrives at Evanston, relatively early in the afternoon.

The second day of the road trip is a relatively short drive from Rawlins to Rock Springs through some-what uninspiring country. We begin with a quick look around Rawlins, before resuming the chase. It's a blustery day with strong winds and high clouds and with rain brewing as we arrive at Rock Springs. In view of the somewhat boring scenery, I brought out 'Big Bertha' my 100 to 400mm lens, whic...

God I love the class 25s
Yes, they are (were) impressive beasts!
It hurts me to see these beautiful steamers in such a sad state
At least they are relatively safe there!
Lovely work Allan, been enjoying all,of your recent videos but this one is a bit extra special!
Thanks trw1089!
Hi Allan a bit of O.Winston Link there with the inside of the sunroom and the church and cemetery and the bridge at Goshen well done cheers Henk
Thanks again Henk. I'm about to post the third video and it's quite good too!
The Train! Glenn
Magnificent
You Could Have Not Gotten Any Closer For A Place To Stay. That Was Cool, I Stayed Over In Covington At The Best Western.
The Hummingbird Inn was fantastic, comfortable and homely with excellent breakfasts and very friendly hosts. I twas the 'icing on the cake' of a marvelous weekend!
This Is Some Of The Best Coverage Of This I Have Ever Seen.
Just Subscribed .
Thank you! It was an incredible day!
Thanks, again!
You do get around one minute chasing big boy in America next minute chasing big 25nc still can’t keep away from the wind cheers Henk
Yes, Henk the wind follows me around! I'm a lucky man, I bought an around the world ticket!
That canyon shot is gorgeous!
Thanks Darryl!
I was looking for a steam engine video posted in the last few days to hope to get a response and being your name has steamy in it I think this might get the best answer. Thanks for posting this, I see a lot of videos that say these are "live steam." I am not being a wise guy, can you tell me why they call it "LIVE." Is it because the steam is under great pressure, making the engine come A-LIVE?
A steam locomotive is considered to be 'alive' because it has a personality. Like a fire breathing dragon, it is visually appealing, the fire burning in the firebox, emitting smoke and steam from the chimney (funnel), add the sounds, the whistle, the bell (in America) the sound of it working hard gathering speed as it departs from a station or climbs a grade, plus the smell of the hot oil and the smoke (particularly with coal burning locomotives). In addition, they have a personality that is largely unique to each individual locomotive. Finally, their performance is dependent on the skills of the driver (engineer) and fireman (fireperson). The combination of all these makes them 'alive'. Raising steam in a cold locomotive is truly an experience of waking a beast!
@@roundtheworldinasteamyhaze2942 Wow! That is a very well though out and worded comment. I appreciate that and it now is crystal clear to me. We have the Cuyahoga Valley Railroad in Cleveland that runs a steam locomotive on tourist runs. I love to watch it and listen to all the sounds.
Es gibt keine neuen Ideen in diesem Video.
Es gibt keine logische Struktur im Video.
Chill
One thing we can’t control is the wind bit like the western plains here in Victoria but worse great perseverance cheers Henk
Thanks Henk! Yes 'the pleurisy plains'! In Wyoming, in July, the risk was heatstroke and sunburn! Although it was much hotter in California!
Hi Al, thanks for sharing... These crowds - absolutely crazy. However, I am still thinking of going there myself next year... 😀
Absolutely amazing shot Alan!
Thank you! 761 at her best!
Beautiful ride!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing!
How very cool this of steam running way over in Africa, especially at South Africa.
What are they hauling?
I've been there. Januari 1979. In hot summer. Even with a mechanical stoker, it was hot on these engines. These days people are complaining about 40 degree Celsius, without hard work. Sissies
I grew up with steam trains running in those days between Cape Town and Simon's Town in beautiful South Africa. At eighty years young, I still thrill to the snorting, belching, puffing and pure power sound of these amazing machines! Well done to all for the great video, and long may they continue!
Great to see this but backing trains up is a no no.
Without a pilot...
Ai mense wat is nou mooier as daardie kla k - hoender vleis mooi
Fabulous iconic locomotives. In the US we had the Big Boys, in Zimbabwe you still have your beloved Garrats that still run! ❤👌
Wow Wow Wow 👍 big thank you for posting, and to all behind the scenes that made this possible 👌👏👏👏😀
How much?
i was one of the lucky ones travelled on taits year in year out then got to drive them later on they were my favorite electric train to drive after that comes the L class english electric long live the vr
Big thumbs up - another epic railroad (and video from you). Thanks.
Thank you Hendrik
That was awesome. Great work. From Liz from Utah
Thank you Liz. There's still a video of scenes chasing the train by road, to come!
Cool can’t wait
the engine crew does a grand good job . thank you for sharing.
😎
😎🦘🚂
You've done it again Al.
Thanks Pete!
Thanks for very nice video! When I visited a few years back the train unfortunately didn't run because a rainstorm had washed out a portion of the tracks.
Thanks Hendrik, I was very fortunate, basically everything that I planned to see on my five week trip came to fruition.
😀@@roundtheworldinasteamyhaze2942 Thanks for your comment. You have a Danish fan here! I really like your nice train videos - from all over the world. You should visit my little country - we have quite a few old tracks operated by vintage steam trains.
This is Liz. That was awesome. Can’t wait for the return trip
Thanks Liz! Part two will be uploaded within the next week.
Very cool to see this. Can't wait for the return video.
Hi Greg, It's posted here: ua-cam.com/video/--EYM61ijN8/v-deo.html
I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay in Durango. The D&S is obviously the primary tourist attraction in our town. The D&S has 8 operating steam locomotives, and they all have, with one exception (#493) been continuously operating for 98-100 years. They were not salvaged from some museum or static display. Their roster of operating steamers constitutes one of the largest collections of running steamers in the U.S. All are 2-8-2s, 3 Alco K28s, 4 Baldwin K36s, and the one Baldwin K37. All the enclosed passenger cars were built in the 1880s, but obviously been upgraded through the years, such as with air brakes and heaters. You caught the D&S at the end of its summer tourist season. Normally during the height of the season, the 8:15 train is powered by twin ALCO DL535 diesels purchased from the White Pass and Yukon railroad, and intended for yard and track maintenance work. They have "C" trucks for more traction on the outbound leg, which has some steeper roadways. They proved to be simpler and cheaper to operate than the steamers, and so the engineering and sales departments were able to put together a plan whereby they gave their passengers a $10 discount (each), which for families of (for instance) 4 people, husband, wife and 2 kids a $40 savings. Normally during the season this train has 11 cars. The 9:00 train is nearly always a double header, dual steamer powered, and with 15 cars, which is all the turnaround wye in Silverton can accommodate. This train is nearly always sold out in advance. The 9:45 train only goes about 5/8 of the way, to Cascade Canyon. It is set up for people with a) younger kids with reduced attention spans, and / or b). those wanting a steam train ride without it being an all-day trip. The concessions car carries a good supply of sandwiches and other lunchables, or a passenger can bring his / her own lunch. The route is spectacular, going through the San Juan Mountains nearly the whole trip, and paralleling the Animas River, once the trains clear the Durango Metro Area. It has been voted the nation's top scenic railroad for each of the past three years by a national travel magazine. Enjoy,, and again, thank your for visiting our town, and making this fine video of the scenic trip. In the winter, there is a daily trip to Cascade Canyon, steam powered, with the engines used having good sized snow plows, as at the higher elevations the snow gets to be some feet deep early in the season, and stays that same some feet deep through most of April.
Thanks for the additional information. The first of three additional videos of the D&S will be posted tonight!
😎
Well done. I think that this line that received world heritage status a few years ago if it is the one they call La Trochita. I'm off to Wikipedia to see how wrong I am. One of those airport strikes by baggage handlers in Buenos Aires stopped a party of us from the UK riding on the line. Reliability can be a serious issue when planning to see La Trochita and I do not just mean the unions.
Hi Tom, Yes, it is referred to as La Trochita. It's a fabulous part of the world. I've been there twice both times with FarRail Tours. Videos of the 2019 tour are also on my UA-cam site. I have more videos from the 2023 tour to post. Thank you for your feedback.
I might add that the quick whistle after passing was a hello to the Cameraman after being recognised by the Driver.
Thank you Slidebar 525! Happy days!
Where is the picture of steam train to Silverton, Colorado
NICE TRAIN AND NICE VIDEO. I JOINED THE OCTOBER 1995 DORRIDGE TRAVEL TO ARGENTINA & PARAGUAY. WE COULD RIDE FROM I. J. TO ESQUEL. ENGINE BALDWIN.
What a huge country. At the bottom of the world. Astounding.
Nice looking countryside, steam locos are living identities. My friend Jeremy Brown suggested that I look at your videos and he also suggested that when I retired, I should join the Pichi Richi railway and work in the loco worjshop, which i did., don't go up there now, as it is a long way and the cost of fuel is more than I can afford now. I now spend time at the National Railway Museum, at Port Adelaide, which is only 40 mins away.
☝As with most Garratt locomotives very poor sanding gear. Have a look at American freight locomotives have sand jets on every drive wheel
Beautiful. Thank you!
As always nice work Al, will be following you.
Thanks Peter! There's plenty more to come!
6:18 That's me! Wonderful video!
Most excellent. Like that scene at 8:30 with the sun coming in the door! Hope there were no collisions this time!
Hi Darryl, No collisions, however, a few other adventures that will become apparent as I post the videos. (and no derailments, either!). Overall a fantastic trip!
It worth pointing out that this train would not be running without the hard work of the Steam Net 2000 group.
