It’s Saturday, the 28th of September, and I’m at Deptford. Opened by the London & Greenwich Railway on February 8th, 1836, Deptford is the oldest railway station in London. The line would be extended to London Bridge by December of that year, and the line would be extended to Greenwich on Christmas Eve 1838. On January 1st, 1845, the South Eastern Railway would lease the London & Greenwich Railway, taking over all operations on the line. Which was authorised by the London & Greenwich Railway Act of 1845. The line would extend from Greenwich to join up with the North Kent line in 1878. In preparation for the extension, the platforms at Deptford were extended in 1876. In 1915, Deptford station would be closed by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway, with the station remaining closed for 11 years until it was reopened by the Southern Railway in 1926. Starting in 2010, the station would undergo rebuilding works, with the rebuilt station opening in 2012.
