Keep my water from freezing in my coops

Simple way to keep my watering systems from freezing during cold weather. It does require management. You must keep lamps clean. Do this at your own risk. Improper setup can cause fire. Using bulbs that are to hot can cause fire. This does require some common sense
Stands for your chick water and feeder
Переглядів 955 місяців тому
This is how I made the stands for my baby chick waterer and feeder. The building blocks lock together well and hold the feeder and waterer into place. They can not knock them off until they get big with an empty feeder or waterer. Sand a stain for easy poo clean up. This is how I did it. Been using them every hatch

Chick no waist feeder

How I heavily modified a farm babies feeder for chicks. Created an insert to slow feed flow and cut down on wasteful chicks. Also made 2 options for insert. A heavy pvc custom crafted insert and a simple plastic insert made from a plastic container.
Chick food containment box
Переглядів 289 місяців тому
3 stage boxes to help contain food for wasteful baby quail. Helps hold the food around your feeder. Keeping food contained in an area makes guests chicks eat the food dropped and stops them form kicking it all around your brooder. Great for the first 2-3 weeks. Until a larger feeder can be sure. Or in my case a custom pipe feeder to cut food waste.

    This is awesome! I use a big open bin but they definitely kick it out all the time which is super annoying. I’ll give this a try. Thank you for giving your quails a good life! No matter if they’re being used for meat, eggs, companionship, all 3, or something else, it’s important they’re treated well and given the right kind of setup with the things they need to thrive.

    Nice! I thought about mixing everything together as well. I just started my “quail adventure” with 250 newbies. They are a week old now and I’ve only lost 6 which I feel like is a good ratio so far. I thought about a dust bath (sand) and my wife said “yeah but mites and other bugs” so I said “I think DE would handle that” and this video is where I landed. I didn’t think of ash even though we use it in our gardens and under rabbit pens along with DE. So now I’m thinking of ALL the possibilities with mixing like this and basically making a huge litter box under my rabbits and quail and just scooping it out like a litter box lol my view on life has been changed forever!! 😂 great video, thank you!

      Really hope it helps.The main thing is keeping it dry. That’s why I use buckets plus is contains the substrate making it last longer and turns into a great egg collection area. They love laying eggs in them. I actually have been wanting to try your exact idea under my larger brooder and like you said just scoop it out like cat litter. I’ve thought about adding fine pine shavings/saw dust to the mix as well. Only concern I’ve had is how wet and how much poo a full brooder of quail can produce. That’s on my to do lists of experiments. Just remember the diatom fit much is really dust and can be bad for your birds. I don’t use it autumn through winter. I have 3 year old birds with no bad health effects but again a little goes a long ways so use it sparing. I only add full scoops when remixing a new batch. I’m happy the video is helpful. I’m currently doing a series called (chick food waste experiment). I’m about to do my final video using all that I’ve learned and tried. Cut chick food waste 60 percent if not more down to a minimal. Game changer on saving food cost for chicks. Worth it if you hatch a lot. I’m always trying creative ideas to change the many bad habits/common beliefs people have raising quail. Trying to find better ways.

    My quail had a prolapse. I got the egg out and she prolapsed immediately with a second egg. Now she's delivering a third!!

    • @practicaljunk836

      I actual just had one of my adults prolapse I removed her a few days. She had a few eggs with no issues and she a fine now. I did notice a double yolk xl egg which can cause this because the eggs just to big. If she is laying over sized eggs this can continue. Is she is laying normal sized eggs and keep prolapsing. This is a serious concern. Other birds could peck at it and causing injury. Prolapse if not addressed could get an infection. If this continues it will result in the bird passing. I would cull only if it is a continuous issue only because I don’t want the animal to suffer from infection or injury both can result in the bird passing inhumanly. If the egg ruptures inside it can cause infection. I rarely have these issues. I encounter prolapse while handling or moving them due to stress. That’s exactly what happen in the video. She tensed up and prolapsed while handling. No one wants to cull our birds but I never want them to suffer. I’m sorry this is a continuous issues. How old is your female? Did she just start laying for the first time or did she just start laying this season?

    i need a machine that removes seeds from weed! now they do make such machines, but they require you to basically break up all the weed first! so i guess i need 2 machines! 1 that GENTLY breaks the buds up (cant be damaging the seeds) despite them being stacked with trichomes and then empties it in to something that removes the seeds from the plant materials. im VERY open to suggestions (im sure the rest of the global "community" would like to see what can be done too).

    • @practicaljunk836
      @practicaljunk836 6 місяців тому

      I don’t really specialize in doing that. Maybe look up some type of commercial grinder and try to replicate it. Then maybe a machine similar to this one could sift everything out for you into different stages.

      @@practicaljunk836 ua-cam.com/video/IYPghEkEags/v-deo.html theres also a way to make one using a shop vac or other vacuum to pull the air instead of pushing. you are working almost parallel to this machine. i think if you used some of that sticky foam tape around the bottom of the sifters as a gasket it would fit tighter and increase efficiency in your design AND keep the dust down. until legalization got more common there was VERY little use for such a machine which is why theres not many good consumer design options. considering the explosive growth of the cannabis industry theres actually a market for such a thing. i appreciate a creative mind, and you sir have delivered. best of luck.

    I had birds where the tissue was also torn by other birds pecking. Is that too late to rescue ?

    • @practicaljunk836
      @practicaljunk836 5 місяців тому

      I’m not sure why but I’ve responded 3 times to your comment. It’s not staying. Yes extensive damage to tissue by other birds can lead to infection or improper healing causing future egg laying issues. You can try but it is humane to cull at this point. I’m sorry for a seemingly late response I do hope your girl made it.

      Alot of thought went into this. I published it here so there is proof of the idea. I almost didn’t when I realized how effective it is. The point of me doing this is to help people. So it would defeat the purpose of doing the work to help others if I didn’t put it on here. I’ve been thinking of creating an actual feeder for chicks that will work properly. Also making a line of inserts for common feeders. Looking into getting a 3D PRINTER but it will be a learning curve. Future projects and ideas

      To my understanding, you don’t want to feed them any citrus, no avocado, and keep them away from tomato plants. They can eat tomatoes do not feed them the vine. Basically no nightshade family. I choose not to feed them anything that’s been cooked in oil or processed it’s really not healthy for us so I don’t feed it to them. I rinse everything well.
