Looks a lot like the one in my living room. One of my wife’s great aunts got it as a wedding present right after the war against the states.

He bullied a weak neighboring country and provoked a a war of aggression with the intention of stealing territory. During the same time period he cowardly avoided a conflict with the 19th Century superpower over territorial dispute in the NW. Despicable character!

Really good at getting things done though. Especially when it came to taking things from Mexico.

Since when was 1840s Empire of Mexico weak militarily. The Mexican Republic had a far bigger standing army than the USA at that time with post Napoleonic generals that considered themselves far superior to the country bumpkins and militias of the US. You seem to be suffering a reverse view of nations from a 20th century state of affairs, not an early 19th. As to the situation with British North America, the US got the border parallel she insisted was fair, and the UK, still not making any money off their Canada holdings, was not going to enter another border war for an unprofitable and expensive western Canada. The US completely conquered Mexico City itself, but didn't insist on annexing Mexico. Just required by treaty that Mexico SELL THE US the northern states they really had never utilized and respect the Santa Anna surrendered to Texas border of the Rio Grande. The US could have completed that treaty a year before it did if the government of Mexico did not change 20 times in one year through internal chaos and coups. Maintaining stable republics was elusive to many nations in the 19th century including thr US, but few topped Mexico in that respect for the whole century. The fault may not lie in your stars, but in yourselves.

In the Southern Appalachians these wheels were used into the late 1930's. This was mostly due to the economic devastation caused by the War for Southern independence. The war set the South back 100 years.
