Thermal pads is optional. But, it's better to have one installed. From this card, it doesn't come with thermal pads installed.
Does it run if you don't connect the 6-pin power, can it draw power from the PCIE?
It will probably start up but the PCI probably can't supply enough power for when the card needs to reach its high speed when you want it for gaming,which is the whole point of having it.
6pin connector is needed for this card. Without it, card won't function properly.
