This short project was kind of a proof of concept test for myself.
I wanted to see if I could transfer my digitalised handwriting (via an iPad Pro) onto a piece of vinyl floor laminate (via my CNC)...
All in all, I would call it a success!

Creating a high-res map using a drone!

Today we are using a drone to create a high resolution, up-to-date map. This map can be overlaid onto Google Maps or Open Street View. Accurate volumetric and distance measurements can be taken from it. This map can even viewed later in 3D!

My first real life test of the new DJI Phantom 3 'Follow Me' mode. I was sitting on the back tray of the leading VW Amarok Utility controlling the Drone, with my mates being general hooligans in the trailing 4WD's. 'Follow Me' worked exceptionally well, and nearly almost all of the hard work framing the shot was done for me! Very impressed.

To map large sites, it may be worth considering a fixed-wings drone such as the Delair UX11
Its necessary more to be a high res ! Aplications need to work better !

Hi Evelyn, one radio transceiver was actually plugged into the computer via USB, the other was plugged into the flight control board on the drone. I used the data radios from 3DRobotics: 3dr.com/blog/introducing-the-new-3dr-radio-d68c7b4b6a69/

I know this is an older video, but how do you send the joystick controls to the multirotor? Is the rc controller hooked up to the computer or are you sending the signals over 433/900mhz radio?
Hi Jon Neubs ! So the Joystick was connected via USB to my laptop which was running my groundstation software, ‘Mission Planner’. The signal was then sent out over the 433/900 MHz data radio link.
It was ok for automated missions, but I found there was a little too much latency for accurate real time manual flying
So in this APM setup basically you don't have to have a transmitter (like turnigy 9x or frsky) just use the air to ground modules?
Gwyne Gomez - correct, it is true that the transmitter is not actually needed to fly & control the drone in this setup. However I always had it nearby just as a backup.

Izak Van Coller the camera was set to 90 degrees downward. This was actually done automatically by the mapping app too!

For this video I used a stock standard DJI P3P. The only mod was the HDMI port installed in the remote controller, which provider the live video feed on the aux. monitor.. That isn't necessary to make a map however.

High guys - yes the stitching was done by uploading the photos to 'Map Pilot' via the website.
What software did you use for the stitching? Or does Map Pilot also offer this functionality?

Well this is using Mission Planner ground control software, its fairly basic really. Just plug in the USB, calibrate all axis, and setup which buttons on the joystick control which functions of the drone... I am using a Pixhawk Autopilot from 3DR here.
Hey, nice4 work. Long time but I am interested on it. I have some questions about Mission Planner. You calibrate joystick in Mission Planer, ok, and then you have connected the TX via USB to the PC, and the RX to Flight Controler. My Question is, do you know the RFD900, I think this device works on the same way right? I should connect the RFD900 via _USB to the PC, connect the Joystick via USB to the PC, setup everything in Mission Planner, and that is all?
