eh. i mean i could do all that, but it'd be neat if minecraft put some more legwork into inspiring such ideas to begin with. not with specific plot details that narrow down the possibilities, but simply...... making the villagers less mechanical. yeah i could stop treating them mechanically, ive never been the type to do villager hall stuff anyways, but they just behave so _rigidly._ they wake up, they work if they have any work to do, the wander around aimlessly, they might trade with eachother, they can potentially reproduce, and then they go back to bed. they run from zombies and illagers, and have a chance of creating an iron golem if they're sufficiently spooked. that's it, thats the long and short of villagers. this is information that is seared into my brain, and i feel like i can hardly do anything about it because of how _simple_ they are, how frustrating they can be to work around. i genuinely struggle to see them as anything more than trade dispensers when barely anything is done to convince me these are genuine, thinking people in the story. they just feel like entities generated in a world with pre-generated houses they didn't actually build. maybe if villagers ACTUALLY meaningfully interacted with their environment, repairing damage to their homes and crops, gathered resources, maybe even make plans to expand their village on their own, maybe THEN i'd have an easier time believing that _anything_ matters to them. so long as they're kept relatively primitive and their enemies have means of circumventing their defenses, then i dont think that would interfere with the idea of fortifying the village and giving them nicer homes and structures yourself. maybe make some villagers have more specific roles for interacting with the player outside of trading, like an Elder villager who keeps track of how many local villagers have died or vanished, and will show gratitude to the player for protecting the village with a permanent buff akin to hero of the village. (not to say that there needs to be an intrinsic reward here, i just imagine players would appreciate it more than just getting a thank you card from them) that way the game reinforces meaning in protecting the lives of these villagers. Or a bardic villager of sorts that improves the village's morale. or a guard villager who accompanies and supports the iron golems. Or how about a guide who'll follow you to other villages if prompted, and would help connect different village populations? in the sense that the guide would help lead villagers to new places without having to stuff them into a boat. I'm sure there are more ideas people could come up with, but this is all i got for now, and i think a direction like this would do a lot to immerse myself more in an imagined story of my own, without intruding with specific plot elements.

I once had this problem of meaning in Minecraft, but I found it by roleplaying peoples and creating stories that interact with each different peoples. The first story of this world started with the first two people wondering in the unchanging greenery landscape hunting peaceful mobs eating their meat. It all changed when the moon over took the sun. Creatures of evil attacked these two people for no reason, so they ran and ran until they found a black structure that lit up the dark land guiding them into a village. They would create a village that would create the first kingdom ever and change stories of many peoples else where in drastic ways. Right now that kingdom sacked another village and people of that village must rebuild themselves from ashes.
