THE CANONISATION of DEREK JARMAN: Toby Anderson @JAMontheMarsh
The Canonisation of Derek Jarman by Toby Anderson
Libretto by Grahame Davies
Premiered on 13 July 2024 at the JAM on the Marsh Festival
Ceferina Penny · soprano
Angelina Dorlin-Barlow · mezzo-soprano
Benedict Munden · tenor
James Emerson · bass
Travis Bloom · piano
John Frederick Hudson · conductor
SYNOPSIS:
Derek Jarman is sat in his garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness. While waiting to be canonised by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a protest group of gay nuns, he is visited by three time-travellers from his 1978 film Jubilee. Queen Elizabeth I, Doctor John Dee, and Ariel from Shakespeare’s Tempest appear one by one and immediately begin to argue with Jarman about art, gardening, and music. In the second scene the conversation drifts to queerness, with each of the characters offering insights into the relationships between gay identity, England, alchemy, love, death, and gender. In the third and final scene the nuns arrive, much to the distress of Queen Elizabeth I, to perform the canonisation ceremony; after everything, the group comes together to assert that love is no peril, only hate.
ABOUT the RESIDENCY:
The COMPOSERS’ RESIDENCY at the JAM on the Marsh Festival is an immersive experience for dynamic composers, wishing to take their skills to the next level. This course, in collaboration with the Royal College of Music, focuses on writing for opera. World-class tutors on this course included international composers Professor Paul Mealor LVO, Jonathan Dove CBE, Professor Shirley Thompson OBE and Dr John Frederick Hudson, as well as librettist Grahame Davies CVO and conductor Nicholas Cleobury. Composers will find themselves immersed in an exciting and intensive composition experience within JAM on the Marsh, a vibrant multi-arts festival.
2024 marked the 30th anniversary of the untimely death of Derek Jarman: artist, film maker, gay rights activist and Romney Marsh resident. Composers composed short operas focusing on Jarman's life to libretti by the celebrated writer and poet, Grahame Davies. As part of the course, they spent a day writing in Prospect Cottage, Jarman’s famous Dungeness home. The operas were composed and premiered at the JAM on the Marsh 2024 Festival.

Thank you. I will be looking at more of your videos. New subscriber. Can you tell me how you achieve microtones with the horn, say 1/4 tone. Do you use your hand in the bell to bend the pitch, or embouchere? or both depending on the amount of bend from the natural note. If writing microtones for horn should each microtone bear some kind of notation as to how that should be made? Also, when it comes to stops, you said if stop was written a horn player would know what that means. Were you saying that when a player completely stops the opening of the bell with their hand that is actually muting rather than stopping?...otherwise couldn't there be confusion about how much to cover the opening? I like the tip about a loudly played stopped note having that fuzzy or raspy sound...How loudly would you have to mark the score to achieve that quality. F or FF?

Can't agree about the key signatures. Everyone I ever played with had no problem reading key signatures. Having played both types, I found the scores that lacked key signatures to be a chore to read; my reaction was like "I know you're really in Eb, why won't you just admit it?". And it made it harder to catch mistakes in the score. When the engraver forgets one of the million accidentals, it looks exactly the same as deliberately going out of key, which a part with a key signature would make clear with an accidental.

Take a look at the attached PDF booklet with examples and you'll see the difference in the score. They were jumping from this C major chord to a high Eb major chord. (Andrea had to jump from E to a high Gb??) But this was funny. Voces8 are SO professional and serene in their manner that in all these 'bad' examples of this series they all remain ever so stoic. Only after Barney laughed a bit here did they break out in laughter for the silly writing.

Great masterclass series! Really appreciative! As a guitar player who cannot play the piano and have no access to an organ, I can acknowledge how complex it is to write for such a grandiose instrument. I will stick to composing for orchestra and harpsichord.
