Glider pilot and private pilot from Slovenia.
Gliding 1500km along the Croatian coast
1500km wave flight that I've done in November 2022. I flew from Slovenia to Bosnia three times on altitudes between 4000 an 6500 meters. I took off before sunrise and landed after sunset. Wave flight with Stemme S10. I was trying to break a Slovenian absolute altitude record, which was at 7600 meters. Flights at altitudes this high can be really dangerous without a proper equipment. Flying with a glider Duo Discus FES along the coast of Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro in incredible weather conditions. The flight was more that 1100km long and we were flying in temperatures between -20°C and 30°C. We completed a first 1000 kilometer out and return flight from Slovenia. www.weglide.org/flight/333022

Due to the storm there was a strong sink that didn't allow me to reach the airport. I landed a few hundred meters before airfield. I did the retrieve myself :)

Hitting a bird at 220 kph on final glide during FCC 2020 in Prievidza, Slovakia. I was flying with DG 100. There was no damage on a glider.

througing out the landing gear at that speed above 200 kmh is not good according instruction manual of dg glider.
I know, I never put the landing gear down at such a speed... In this video I think I put the gear down at less than 150kph. I extended the airbrakes before the gear.
What does the FAA say about flying with no shoes on? (Note reflection in canopy)
As far as I know there is no rules regarding this here. As this is Europe we are inside EASA and not FAA.
Cool flight Bernard! Although watch out next time for using cannula at specific altitude. It is more efficient as you are saying, but you may be inhaling not enough oxygen with it. Full mask above 18000 ft is not recommended, it's mandatory according to MH manual! I wasn't aware of that for quite some time either. Keep on posting gliding videos and safe flights!
Thank you! I will do more research regarding canullas/masks. When I am flying above 18000ft, I aways set the EDS to face mask setting. I usually have oxygen saturation well above 95%, so I never felt any need to switch to mask. The biggest issue that I see with cannula is that if I take a breath through mouth, I don't get any oxygen. Safe flights to you too!

May i ask why you didnt land on the runway?
I landed on the grass runway. I prefer to land there, as I can exit the runway at the trailer (on the paved runway you have to stop at the end of the runway, so that there is enough room for aircraft landing behind you)

They say, PIK-20's really suffer from rain interference. But I would love to have one, with the 90 degree flaps.
I've never flown a PIK 20, but it looks like an interesting glider!
@bernarddobre A circular crank takes the flaps down to 90 degrees, unless it's the PIK-20C, which I believe has more standard spoilers, and flaps.

Flight level 280 with only a canula that is recommended to only FL180??????
Cannula is actually more efficient than the normal face mask. Most of the pilots that I know fly only with canula.
I have struck buzzards twice while thermaling. In one time I could see it falling in a spin but recovering the flight around some 300 mts AGL !!!
That's really interesting, it's nice to know that it survived. I had the same experience once, I hit a bird while thermaling and it flew further like nothing has happened...

I don't understand why you are flying that fast in a glider. Your are in the yellow zone, close to your speed limit. The only reason to fly that fast in a glider is to perform a loop, but you are even going too fast for that. If you pulled G's at that speed you might have seen your wings fly off and you would be dead instead of the bird. Go buy a BD-5 if that's your thing.

No; potentially a competition finsh. On a long long final, significant manoeuvres are fairly unlikely.
I was nowhere close to the speed limit. I was flying 200kph and Vne is 250kph. On competitions you have to fly fast, that is the whole point of the competition. And there is no such thing as wings just falling off - those gliders are designed with huge safety factors and can withstand significant loads.
The safety factors are not huge: gliders are designed (like other aircraft) to meet specific codes. I'm not sure I'd fly at Vne at low level; more likely Vra, but 200kph is fast but not excessive.@@bernarddobre
@@lautoka63 you are correct, the word huge might be excessive. If I remember correcty (please correct me if I'm wrong) according to CS22 at gust speed (in this case probably close to Va) the glider has to withstand the vertical gusts of 15m/s and at dive speed it has to withstand the vertical gust of 7.5m/s. To have gust like this the air has to be really turbolent.

No, it just starts shaking really bad and the nose drops. Also the string on the canopy starts dancing.
Usually the gliders don't have a stall warning. Normally it's easy to see when you are approaching stall... Most of the gliders are designed in a way that they don't spin after a stall (without too much control surface deflections) and also the ailerons are usually responsive at high angles of attack.

Birds are truly oblivious to the speed of anything coming at them. I once just missed a hawk climbing out at 70 mph. He didn’t even budge until i was 100’ away the tucked a wing and dove under my wing. Never plan on the bird moving or which way they will go.

After every flight above FL220 check for ‚Altitude Decompression Syndrome‘! Little N2-bubbles are forming in the blood and blocking little arteries, e.g. in the brain, resulting in headache…
That is correct, one can get that when flying above FL180. However, I try to minimize the risk of this by breathing the oxygen on the face mask setting of EDS from the beginning of flight. I always pay attention to any signs of Altitude DCS (headache, pain in the joints...). Thank you for your concern!

There was more than enough energy, as I was flying fast. And even if I wouldn't be able to reach the airfield there was enough fields to land before.
Very typical for gliders returning to base, convert height into speed. Final glide computers help you judge
Not when you are doing 100 odd knots.

I was carefull not to exceed the Vne. I am always aware of the TAS at high altitudes, as this is the biggest limitation on long wave flights... Thank you for your concern!

What a great flight Bernard, glad you had a second OX system on board, better to be prepared than not. S-10 must be a terrific ship to fly! I would have had to get a ladder to get into the cockpit....too short. LOL I liked the cannula (US spelling) better than a ox mask, more control over the amount of oxygen you need. How long have you been soaring? Thanks for another beautiful flight!

With the system that I'm using it better to use a canule, it's more efficient. And also with mask you have issues when talking to ATC (except if you have a mask with a microphone).

You need a flight plan, transponder and a bit of luck😉

Thank you Yves! With flight plan we would most likely be able to go another 100km further. We are planning to extend the flight to alps next time. I think that there is a lot of possibilities also for big triangles, by extanding the flight to Maribor and to Brunico...
I recall visiting family in Slovenia back in the 90’s and we were in Tolmin and I was asked if I wanted to go in a glider. I said no but watching this video I should have said yes! Well done on the flight 👍

What an incredible soaring flight...! Hope you've been able to make a longer one with such great clouds especially the Lenticular's! I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains in USA, we have beautiful Lennies also. I'm a old glider pilot now enjoying the flights of super glider pilots in other countries, I was a teenager back in the 1950's learning to fly gliders. Flew a lot of ships over a long period of time, motor glider too, one one built in the late 1950's called the Hummingbird 2 place self launch motorglider, way before any other motorgliders were built... Now they are so beautiful with such long wings! You all are very fortunate to have such wonderful soaring conditions. Happy soaring. Thanks for posting, very well done.

Imam eno vprašanje. Kako vam na teh treningih merijo daljave? Z uradnimi video kamerami ali ročno? So te kamere, ki sicer pokrivajo doskočišče v času tekem prazprav nonstop vklopljene? Tam pa je nekdo cel čas v sodniškem stolpu tudi v času treningov in vam s pomočjo video kamer in računalnika meri uradne/natančne daljave ali kako? Hvala.
Na treningih nam ponavadi sploh ne merijo daljav. Če pa jih, jih pa merijo ročno. Sistem za elektronsko merjenje daljav je postavljen samo med tekmami.
