I have had this footage on my desktop for the past year and felt it was a good example of the Cooke Mini S4/is paired with the full frame R5C shooting 8K. For those curious, I had to scale back to 55% for the 8K of fit a 4K DCI output. For the few 4K DCI scenes, I had to scale in to 107% to eliminate the worst of the Cooke Mini S4/is vignette...since these lenses are primarily made for the S35 ...

Thanks for watching, Brother. Blessings to you and yours.
I've had the C70 for 4 months now and I like it but it's truly a odd duck. Big step up from my C100 M2, and I understood the pro and cons of the super 35 sensor, but some things I don't like - NO EVF- I truly have found the camera USELESS to use outdoor without a EVF. Very difficult to see settings and critical focus outdoors. Canon clearly sold this partially as a run-and-gun camera and they should have had at least an optional EVF for shooters like me. The C100 also had a much better build quality and hinge on the display was bullet proof - not like the flimsy C70. That said I really like the feature set and codec choices on the C70 and the autofocus since the firmware update is quite respectable. Still overprice IMHO but solid workhorse camera.
Yeah, the flip screen doesn’t inspire much confidence. That being said, I have grown to rely on external monitors now and run a much brighter monitor (3000nits) on shoots. I dabbled with the C400 two weeks ago and it seems to be a great package out of the box but…..I truly love the DGO sensor in the C70 more. Also, if I need a compact setup, I use the R5C….which has an EVF. So yes, the C70 isn’t really a mirrorless with an EVF nor is it a box camera with a robust and malleable monitor….its an “odd duck” as you say. Hehe.
@@aregal The Panasonic S52 is an amazing camera for the money - terrific low light, unlimited shooting and a cooling fan so never overheats. My co-work (Panasonic fan) gives me crap about buying the C70, but once you've had built-in NDs hard to go back. The C70 is serving me just fine for my type of work. I'll rent a C400 in time, but no rush
Definitely no rush; cameras are so good now. Yeah, I think the C70 will be highly revered in the future, much like the BMPCC OG is now…but for its own reasons.

Good review. I love mine despite the quirks. What have been your favorite lenses to use with it?
My first choice would have to be the Cooke MiniS4i for their rich tone. Next, would have to be nFDs. They have a vintage Canon look that flares nicely. Third, believe it or not, would have to be TTArtisans, they extremely affordable and compact. Fourth, would have to be these quirky C Mount FUJINON machine vision lenses. They’re soft and can only be used in S16 mode but they have an indie feel to them. Fifth, are the non-L Canon RFs, they’re lightweight and the AF is nice.
@@aregalcan you post videos you shot with the Canon C70 on Cooke lenses and Arri Ultra Primes
@@aregal thanks for your response! I haven’t used any of these yet
I posted one a couple of months ago. My time with that lens was brief. We hired it for a job but decided to use CN-Es instead.
Hey man I’m looking to use this lens with tilta mirage matte box, wich adapter I need for that?
You would need a 95mm to 87mm mattebox ring adapter. I do not seem to see any available currently. 114 to 87mm yes but not 95 to 87.
Further, I got the BrightTangerine 87-114mm adapter ring to use with 114mm matteboxes.
Great lens unfortunatly not possible to attach a circular filter on it like
It accepts 82mm threaded filters if you need to use one.
@@aregal What!!!!! Do you mean Cooke Mini s4i has 82mm filter thread?
@@arunr4103 correct. It has an 82mm front filter thread.

Adapter for Arri PL Mount Lens to... www.amazon.com/dp/B08XQPTVXT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
@@aregal Do we need any lens support?
@@arunr4103 the PL adapter needs support. Cooke Minis average 3.5-4lbs each. If you’re using it on a camera that has a native PL mount, you don’t need lens support.
That slider push in on ur pup was equally adorable and cinematic, great stuff!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, he’s a faithful little booger. I just realized most of those shots are of him. Haha.
Lovely footage from a camera I still use on some of my projects. However, I noticed that you are not using lens support, unless the follow focus is enough. How heavy is this lens and how heavy of a lens can one use with this camera without lens support?
Thansk for watching! The nature of the PL mount is rock solid and the lens itself (3.5-3.8lbs) doesn’t need lens support. The support post is on the PL adapter which holds all of the lens’ weight.
Amazing video. Curious as to what slider was used?
Thanks for watching! I used the KesslerCrane CineSlider.
@@aregal are you happy with it or would you get something different today?
@@colinthomas2525 I love it. I’ve even put an ARRI Alexa MiniLF on it with my Cookes. It was just as smooth. The max load is 80lbs. On the daily, I use a DanaDolly for work. I love that thing too but it’s unwieldy unless you have a crew; like we usually do.

This is not hdr
This was shot in HDR PQ and exported REC.709 straight from cameras.
@@aregal I understand but we as the viewers are seeing this as 8bit and we do not see the High dynamic range. HDR exported to sdr is sdr for the viewer. I don't understand the amount of videos stating HDR when at the end, the viewer aka UA-cam users don't see the end product in 10bit
@@racecrashrepeat You are correct. This was to see if there was any gain in shooting in HDR PQ and exporting straight to Rec.709. My hopes were that at it would be like shooting in WideDR like I’ve shot on the C300ii and C200 but as you see in this video…this was not the case.
@@aregal don't get me wrong is fantastic footage. It's an awesome camera, this is actually not aimed at you as I understand the HDR PQ setting from the r5. But yes the amount of videos filmed and titled HDR when infact they are either made in 8bit or end up as 8bit in the final file. If a tv doesn't trigger the HDR mode then you know the file doesn't have the colour bandwidth of hdr. I'm saying that as it's the easiest way to know the data. But also on like a lg oled it's clear when the rec2020 profile is utilised correctly.
@@racecrashrepeat oh dang, that’s interning that LGs get the HDR trigger via UA-cam. I see it trigger when I stream from Netflix, Disney+, etc. I export 99.99% of the time in Rec.709. Maybe I’ll try an HDR post-production workflow in a future video and see what it looks like on my LG.

Hahah. Really? You don’t like the R5C and/or R5?
Well done my friend. You took the legendary lens and your gear out for a spin in L.A. A little too much flair from the car lights? Curious about what camera you used with it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and sorry for just replying. I used the BMPCC OG.
what monitor did you use?
I use the Atomos Ninja V. Thanks for watching!!
Interesting to see the Cooke S4 Mini on the R5. At Full frame I notice the Super 35mm lens does not cover the entire sensor. Causing it to vignette. I got the R5C and I'm sure the Super 35mm option in the menu can rectify the situation. Have you tried a 1.6 X extender to make it FF on the R5?
You are correct. A 1.6x extender would definitely as the MiniS4s are made for S35 and take advantage of that adapter I “pushed” the lenses by filming in UHD on the R5 and “digitally cropped” 1.1x by turning on DigitalStabilization. Unfortunately, this introduces a slight degradation in image quality and work on most of my Cookes but also introduced visible image wobbles since the vignette is so close to edge of frame. The 25mm has the smallest image circle which is why it’s vignetting when shooting FullFrame UHD at 1.1x crop. Earlier this year, I got an R5 C and the locked sensor makes it easier to frame for a 1.2x crop via the framing tools. MiniS4is have a slightly larger image circle when compare to the S4s…some say, this larger-than-S35-but-smaller-than-FF format should be called “Ultra35”. Haha. Thanks for watching and participating in the discussion!
@@aregal Are the Cookes optimized for 4K or 6K or 8K recording at all? I know the Sigma Cine 18-35mm Super 35mm is 6-8K ready. Obviously I can't afford the Cooke Anamorphic X2 lens, BUT Sirui Anamorphic RF mount is on the cards for me.
@@VIPAH I know people comment on the “Cooke Look” but I do not recall Cooke literally saying that their lenses are made for a specific resolution. What we do know is that Cooke has been making motion picture lenses since the beginning of cinema. I DO know that Cooke has been catering to larger formats like FullFrame. I also recall Cooke commenting that someone using their FullFrame Panchros thought they received a bad set since the focus was “blurry” off-center but Cooke commented that THAT was the Cooke Panchro look.
@@VIPAH to more directly answer your question, it would be safe to assume that Cooke MiniS4is are tailored for S35 film which roughly equates to 6K.
@@VIPAH the whole optimised for 6 or 8k is a little bit redundant as most modern sensors will out resolve even high resolution sensors. The Cooke lenses are very high resolution, but with a pleasing focus fall off which will make them "feel" softer than lenses like the Sigma. These lenses were made with an image circle optimised for S35, but like most sets the longer focal lengths will "cover" a FF / 135 sensor. They will work best however on a S35 sensor, which is after all the standard for cinema.
For the longest time I have wanted to shoot Cooke SK4s on my OG, but the only lenses available for purchase have been a £23,500 set that is on sale everywhere but with no takers, which is more than a set of MiniS4's..
who is the music?
Thanks for watching. The song is “Breakfast” by J French.
Is there a small gap between the cage and R5 body? Like it’s mostly flush looking until you tilt it and can see between the two?
That’s correct. The parts that could come in contact with the body, mainly during installation, is padded with rubber.
At the base too?

@@seannfkennedy Thanks for helping out your fellow ‘Tuber, Brother!
Great footage and nice grade! How do you perform your color grading with the BMPCC? I have a c-mount lens but only use it on my RetroScan Universal film scanner. I like the idea of that small, fast lens with the BMPCC and am considering the Laowa 10mm zero distortion lens for gimbal shots. Do you add small ND filters to that tiny c-mount lens for outdoor shooting? Nice shallow DOF.
Thanks for watching! I haven’t really shot with these FUJINON MachineVision lenses outside in a looooong time. I either iris-ed down or shuttered up back them. Now, I have front thread adapters that will allow me to use my 82mm Hoya SOLAS IRND filters which the BMPCC really need when you need to stop down. Normal NDs introduce IR polution which is hard to fix in post.
@@aregal Thank you for your reply. Yes, I always shoot with some type of IR filter on my Blackmagic cameras. I use a Hoya UV/IR filter and use it with an SLR Magic variable ND. It’s not a perfect variable ND. I have seen the dreaded X pattern in some conditions but it’s fairly rare for me and it’s too easy to dial in exposure with a variable ND (as a hobbyist).
I forgot to tell you. I grade in Premier using a variation of this method. ua-cam.com/video/RvFCnVRcT3Q/v-deo.html
@@aregal Hi thanks for the video. where did you get the front thread adapter from?
@@dominicpclarke Hi! Thanks for watching. Are you asking how I adapted the lens or how I adapt filters to the front of the Fujinons?

It’s a SmallRig Mini Top Handle for Lightweight Cameras (cold shoe version) which unfortunately SmallRig no longer sells.
@@aregal Oh yes - I see they still sell the other version w/ 2 1/4" screws- too bad.
@@TedBorel yeah, I’m seeing that nearly all of the cold shoe top handles are being discontinued from all brands. On my other rigs I’m using the Tiltaing COMPACT NATO top handle. That being said, this SmallRig mini too handles is perfect for the BMPCC

12” 15mm steel rods by SmallRig
Hdr and a ND filter is great for run and gun
Did you feel that setup needs a lens support? Thank for posting the video, great job!!
Thanks for watching! The PL mount adapter has a rod support mounted to the 15mm rods. That is more than enough for the Cooke Minis. Now, if I had a Varotal, yes, I would have another support post mount towards the front of that lens.
@@aregal Thanks for the info!
That lens with the BMPCC OG is magic
Thanks!!
Great work man...you've certainly captured the essence of the bmpcc OG.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
I have to agree with Adrian Aftene - I feel like I was there with you... However, I would really really like to know it this footage is straight from camera - no post processing - Please tell me this is straight form camera. I am looking at this lens right now for my D7200, and if the lens works in low-light like in this video - great.
I did not realize I did not respond to you. Unfortunately, I shot this in CinemaDNG raw which does require a post process. I performed a basic grade just to get a good image out of the camera; basics slider adjustments to shadows and highlights and maybe an S-curve applied…no luts, or crazy grades. Again, just a basic grade to extract the image from CinemaDNG raw. This is as close to out of cam from me.
Is there any reason why in 4K video looks smaller frame?
Thanks for watching. The 4K in the 5D4 records in DCI not 16x9.
Do you have any problem with AF in video with the 24mm 1.4?
None. And AF gets even better on my R5/R5C.
Further, this video was shot with Gen1 DPAF on the EOS R…..again, AF gets even better with USM L lenses and the Gen2 DPAF on the R5/R5C. Thanks for watching!!
Nice work!! I have the same lens, but on the back glass the coting is scratches… I make a few videos about it on my channel… now I cleaned all the coating and the lens is sharper that before. But you footage looks way sharper that mine !
