25 Kickass Non-Sonic SEGA Genesis songs (part 5 - Pop music) [HD Audio]
READ DESCRIPTION PLEASE
"Wasn't it meant to be just 20?"
Hell no!
Sorry about me taking so long to do this! I've just gotten out of two of the hardest weeks I've ever lived through. It's over though (I hope...).
This time around: Pop music special!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ho, yeah, hey!
Pegasus steps forth with some music once again. Good? Bad? You decide.
These videos are a little sample of what the Genesis' awesome sound chip(s) could deliver.
The SNES had a chip (SPC700) that gained fame because it could sample instruments, whereas the Genesis' YM2612 had only one channel for samples, and the rest was all FM synthesis, paired with square waves from a second, older chip (SN76489, also found in the Master System).
They are different and have different capabilities of their own, but there is a major asymmetry from one to the other, not related to the sound: Programming FM sounds is difficult.
Whilst in Japan and Europe developers made absolutely amazing things with the Genesis sound, in the United States, lazy and incompetent as FUCK developers used a generic tool - an awfully bad sounding driver with utmostly primitive pre-written instruments - instead of making their own.
This tool, "GEMS", was used in almost all U.S. made games. What did this lead to? To make people from there believe (and spread the word saying that) the Mega Drive is a terribly bad sounding system, when it could very well be the best sounding system not just in the 90's, but in all gaming history.
Worse, Super Nintendo fanboys from then and now take pride in making comparisions using only U.S.-produced games. They've made the phrase "well, in comparision, the Genny sounds like shit" widespread.
They don't know how wrong they are.
So I made this series to prove it. One by one, all shall witness the chiptune magic from SEGA's console!
Twenty five songs.
It is dedicated to two persons: First, Cluh, who made me feel that making this series and getting it up in UA-cam was worth it.
Not only he gave me positive feedback on it as a whole, but he went all out and gifted me what I consider the best game in my favorite console's library (and simply one of the best things I've ever played): MOTHERFUCKING THUNDER FORCE IV!!!
I will not forget that until the day I die.
Plus, he's cool.
And second, my "bro". Not in the way of blood brother - the modern sense of "bro". We constantly fight over which console is better as if we were still living in 1993. We're both rabid fanboys and we love doing that, So, I won't allow him or anyone else to badmouth the Genesis, as is my favorite console of all time.
This big headed guy dared me, saying "the only thing that it had was Sonic", so I decided not to just not include any Sonic game, but to also leave out Street Fighter 2 and all Streets of Rage games, since they are amongst the most popular of the library.
I decided that it'd be far more interesting if I used only ONE song from each game. The only common denominator between these are the same sound chips.
I haven't played more than 50% of the games it had; I just picked some of my favorite tunes.
Sega CD and 32X games are out as well. No expansions. Just put the cartridges in and listen!
I won't say the sources, but I'll give you some images and hints - very obvious ones :) You're free to guess, if you feel like doing so.
Hey Bro! The Genesis was absolutely-fuckin'-awesome... deal with it!
DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the songs or images portrayed here. All artists have been given credit. This video does not intend to infringe copyright, nor to make any profit.
PS: Big thanks to Project 2612! You guys rock!

A very particular song, that oscillates between rock, latin rhythms and jazz. Even if it's a combination you wouldn't have ever imagined, Dimension managed to make a very nice combination of the three. As always, comments and thumbs (?) are welcome. Thanks for passing by!

Es un hack en el que se le agrega a sonic, el homing attack, mas velocidad ya que le quitan la capa de velocidad clasica de sonic 1 y 2 y lo dejan mas rapido que el sonic 3. Hello, i have watched these videos many times and also came here back today, its been quiet long time since i last watched these but now that i got inspired again to make sega genesis musics with deflemask again (and this time im not giving up) these are really inspiring me more. Yes, very hard times have passed (and are still ongoing), and I got busier and busier (being an adult sucks) so I kept delaying it until I had no room for the series in my mind. What happened, also, is the fact that I wanted to do thematic videos (heavy metal, pop, orchestra, etc) and I never got to be satisfied with how they turned out. Essentially, the series went into what they call _development hell_ I'll get back on it. I am still not done with it! Please keep it up, and post a comment here if you ever upload your work! Thank you very much for your comment - it made my day :)

And I'm not trying to say "oh the snes is better" I'm just being real here. None of this sounds like actual instruments, it sounds like lo-fi synthy music.

    Love this video, but I kinda wish there was a little more quantity here, particularly since I personally feel metal was the Gen's strongest genre (other than SOR techno). Like instead of Metal Squad looping for 4.5 minutes (as incredible as it is), half some tracks to throw other songs in for more exposure, like Whirlwind from Shinobi 3 or something from Musha, but that's my 2 cents. Great vid though and I love the passion!

    • @SpiralPegasus
      @SpiralPegasus 8 років тому

      +Retro Soul There will be more, no doubt. I just don't know when, and I don't feel like promising a date I will not fulfill. Whirlwind is in part 2 of the series; MUSHA will be featured. As for Metal Squad being so long... it's just two loops of it. Every song in here is looped twice, save for Big Boss from Advenures of Batman & Robin, because _every loop _*_lasts_*_ four minutes_. Eventually I'll get back to making more videos -better, even! But on the last years I've been fighting against a lot of shit and delaying things I did just for pleasure's sake. Thanks for the comment! Oh and you're free to suggest more if you feel like it!

  • @DehnusNorder
    @DehnusNorder 9 років тому

    Also Emulation doesn't do it justice as FM is analogue and Emulators have to use sample rates to approach the wave forms digitally. It never really gets as close. Especially if you used the chips errors (Ladder Effect for instance) to your advantage :P.

    • @SpiralPegasus
      @SpiralPegasus 9 років тому

      DehnusNorder I get that it's not _one hundred percent_ accurate, but isn't 90-95% just fine? I've heard pretty much 3/4 of everything in Project 2612 and I've only really heard two or three games where there's a noticeable difference in emulation vs. real hardware. Besides, when you go and consider "real hardware" most people seem to forget that throughout the MD/Genesis history there's been like a billion revisions of hardware and only "pre-TMSS" and _modded_ (not necessarily "real", per se) are the only ones that seem to count. Also every time I read one of these "no emulation" comments I can't help but wonder what would be the relevance of 10+ year old gaming systems today...

    • @DehnusNorder
      @DehnusNorder 9 років тому

      SpiralPegasus Ofcourse, it is "good enough" however, effects are missing (like if you try certain demos they will just garble rather than let you hear the samples) and people compare it to SNES emulators. And that isn't a fair comparison and why so many Meg and FM fans are so miffed about it. The SNES "solution" borrows itself perfectly for using filters to improve the sample quality. Also it often removes the interpolation filter that an SNES used by standard. This filter actually degraded the sample when playing it back (and couldn't be turned off as far as I know). Yet it is that music that they then compare to an FM solution.This does not benefit from these filters, outside of it's one PCM channel. It also even degrades compared to the actual wave forms. That is why people go "REAL HARDWARE!" all the time, because they are sick and tired of a bunch of uneducated nutters screaming that the SNES was so much better based on what they hear in an emulation environment. It is like claiming the AY8910 was better than the SID because in emulation it sounds "clearer". This will also, and rightfully so, rile up a lot of SID fans who know that the SID kicked the AY8910's booty from here to Pluto. In case of the MEG vs the SNESSY, it isn't that big a difference as the SID vs the AY8910. But let us at least treat it fairer. For instance one big difference is the change in pitch and base. The emulated ones very often sound too high and scratchy, while actual high tones are lost.

      DehnusNorder I think that's going a bit over the top. I mean, I'm not saying you are wrong (at all) - it's just that the uneducated man bases himself on things that he listens to when he plays games. You and I know a lot about the techical side of things, but they don't. It's true that on real hardware SNES playback sounds as if it were being played inside a tube of toilet paper whereas bass sounds are clearer on true MD. But they don't care. What they care about is the music itself rather than the quality - and that, I divide on "instrumentation" and "composition". The most spoken of games (for quite some time at least, less so now) are/were Sonic, Ecco, Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2 and a plethora of other multiplats that always sounded better on SNES because the developers couldn't bother themselves to write proper sound drivers for the MD - composition was the same but the instrumentation was horrible. The uneducated man doesn't know this either. So what you've got to do is show them that _in the hands of people that knew their shit, MD handed the SNES it's own ass in a silver platter._ Which is what I aimed to do with this series... And in these terms, whether you're using a modern emulator or real hardware, makes no difference. If you take Doom for the 32X, you can record it with a pre-TMSS Genesis and the highest fidelity player on earth and it'll still sound like shit. Meanwhile a mediocre recording of SNES doom is OK - not mindblowing, but far better than the former. And then you turn to something like this ua-cam.com/video/eLPCuuiSh5k/v-deo.html and no matter how bad the recording, anyone can tell it's FM, and they can tell it sounds better. Get what I mean?

      SpiralPegasus I guess I"m just a bit sick of a huge group of people claiming this that are simply untrue about FM. For instance I really love Amiga, which is sample based, but I refuse to diss the Megadrive for it's chipsets. I'm the first to admit there are some faults in there, some could be "abused" to gain some nice new effect (which would then nto work anymore at other incarnations of the hardware which fixxed those flaws). But my biggest gripe with the Megadrive is simply that the timer interupts are not connected to the Z80. Had they been then they would have been able to pull of a lot more with it than we see today. Ontop of that the audio line is running throught he cart, yet SEGA never really took advantage of that, I know the FM chip in there was great for it's time.. but really they could have added a secondary YM2612 on the cart for RPG's or a SEGAPCM chip for Fighting games or having allowed third parties to do so. I never understood why SEGA limited themselves while Nintendo used On Cart chips to keep up and go beyond. I know it is a price thing, but it is one of my gripes with the Meg. That said I refuse to put down it's sound setup, as it is rocksolid for the price and memory requirements of the time. Samples take more memory than FM patches :P.

      DehnusNorder An audio coprocessor on the cart would've been a wonderful idea. Have you ever seen Virtua Racing? SEGA *did* use a "superchip" in a cart like Nintendo did, although just once. Watching it running the game 30x faster and smoother than any Super FX chip and allowing for 2P gameplay at the same time always led me to question why on earth did they decide to make the 32X when a couple of carts like that would've let the Genesis fight on until the Saturn came out... And FM is a sound like no other. I would've loved for more consoles to use this type of sound.
