A Summer in Summary: Brooklyn Kayak PDL 10(10.0) - “Second Moon” Edition
An action-packed summer in quick succession, showing just how much I enjoy this kayak. I'm also kind of proud of this video. While it may not be the most polished, or have edge-of-your-seat action, it's me to the core. That has been the goal from the beginning. Please feel free to jump around the chapters and see some of the weird stuff that happened over the summer.
Also, it’s the beginning of Fall, not the end. My bad.

Going into Blackwater Bay with little to no knowledge proved to be quite the challenge. I did learn to throw a cast net halfway decently though. I also chatted with some very nice locals who gave me some great advice. Go check out @CaptainCody7 for one of the best cast net tutorials on this website!

How To Set Up Your Brooklyn Kayak PDL 10 Rudder Deploy Cord

NOTE: I got this kayak with no instructions, and the video for its set up was recently uploaded by Brooklyn, well after I figured this method out. I was watching the PK10 rudder set up video. This is an alternate method for properly setting up the cord that deploys and retracts the Brooklyn Kayak PDL 10 rudder.

On July 23, 2023, my father, also known as “Is that Bill Dance?!?!?”, and who is one of my closest friends, went on to his next great adventure. I wanted to share one of the most interesting moments we shared together, along with my mother. This was 2020, just as Covid began really causing major trouble. I was furloughed from my job, but I had plans to go fish the Florida Keys, and I went. The ...

You say you’re 5’9”? How would it be for me being 5’5”? Would I almost be lying down in order to pedal? I’m thinking about getting this one but I’m not sure I want to do all that modification.
You definitely wouldn’t be lying down. In fact, I think you would be quite comfortable. I think it would probably safely accommodate someone well below that height. With it being only a 10 foot kayak, it’s probably going to be less accommodating to taller folks. I personally would focus more on weight than anything. This kayak without my gear weighs in at 58lbs, which is feathery compared to some similar models. My paddleboard before this was 50lbs before I added a chair and basket, so I would estimate 54lbs for the paddleboard+mods. That’s not light, but after watching people trying to work with 100lbs+ of kayak and gear, with their kayak on its own weighing 96lbs, I decided I want compact. On my heaviest days, I’m probably hauling 70+lbs of stuff. Once I try camping with it, I estimate the weight will probably be a lot higher, like 90 or so lbs. If I go any larger, I’d love a real boat big enough to mothership the kayak places, with a trailer. I’m still loving the kayak by the way. I was out on it yesterday evening, and I will be back on it again today.
Just ordered mine yesterday
I hope you like it as much as I like mine. I plan to do a follow-up about the honeymoon phase, but I have been too busy to get much editing done.
Just got this kayak and used it for the first time this last weeekend. I agree with everything you said in the video about the kayak and the company. Did you find a resolution to the seat issue? I have the same problem. Also, have you had any issues with the paddle locks? Mine haven’t broken but they loook like they will not hold in the long term.
Thanks for watching! I do have a separate video called “Additional Updates” where I do show how I used some pieces of PVC pipe to fix the rear legs of the chair into position. The PVC was slightly too wide for the front sections. In regards to paddle locks, do you mean the locks that hold the pedals in place? Or the bungee that lashes the paddle to the kayak? Or maybe even the Brooklyn paddle itself. If it is about the paddle, I had my own, so I didn’t purchase one. The paddle bungee has worked fine for me so far, as have the pedal locks. The pedal locks did feel a little loose when I first got the kayak, but one of the first things I did was get a philips head screwdriver and 5mm allen wrench, and tighten everything on the kayak. This did help the pedal locks feel much more secure.
This ABSOLUTELY helps to make it easier to pull the rudder up! Thx
Thanks for the feedback! I almost took the video down after I posted it, because Brooklyn uploaded theirs while I was editing this one, but I noticed in their video, they did a different method. It appears to work fine, but I like the reinforcement this method provides more. It’s also gotten a LOT easier to pull up as it has become more broken in. I changed out the pull ball with a fishing reel knob from on old unfixable reel, and that has worked really well. I was about to use a much larger lawnmower pull handle until I thought of all my old reels I have gathered up or been given over the years. I was able to learn a ton about reels using these old broken ones before I ever opened up and worked on one of my good ones. That was a huge help. I have even been able to repair some of the old reels and give them to neighbors, plus repair some of my own.
Can you show the design of the bottom? I can't get Brooklyn Kayak to respond for that request at all. You can PM me if it's easier. Also, how do you like that fin drive? How is the steering going left vs right? My current kayak's steering tends to not move the rudder to the right as much as to the left.
Thanks for watching! I plan on getting a second video up sometime soon, but I keep spending too much time on the water. I will make sure to show the bottom. I swear I saw a picture of the bottom design on the BKC website, but I could be mistaken. The rudder on the kayak is very good. I have not had any issues with it at all. It turns very evenly, and can make a nice tight turn. I’m sure someone else has done this before me, but I have become a fan of what I call “rudder bumping” where I move the rudder back and forth in the direction I want to turn the kayak without pedaling. It’s great for fine tuning your positioning on the water.
@@bitefishing I went and watched your other videos and saw the bottom when you first received it. Thanks. But yeah, love to see more of your experiences with it.
@@bitefishing Do you have any friends with a Hobie? I wonder if the Hobie's drive would fit in this.
@@tdok I don’t know anyone with a Hobie sadly. I did do a lot of research before I purchased, and this does appear to be a mirror image design of a V2 mirage drive, so I am 99.9% sure it would fit. If the drive ever goes out, I’ll probably get a Hobie drive, in fact
I really like this model’s design! Either will be getting this or their two pc kayak! @Brooklyn Kayak Co all the way!👍🪡<“)//>{Tim ❤✝️
I’m still loving mine very much! I was out on it last night simply pedaling around for hours.
Thanks for the video, do the fins kick up if they hit something? Also what is your height on setting on the peddles ? Thinking about getting one but I am taller 6'5'' not sure if the peddles are compatible with me.
Thanks for watching! The fins don’t kick up. They also don’t have a reverse setting. They’re basically a generation 2 mirage drive knock off based on what I have found. They do have a decent clearance though. I’ve been in some skinny water, where I wasn’t able to pedal, but was able to still paddle around with ease. Just make sure one pedal is pushed as far forward as it can go to get the fins pulled up as far as they can go. In regards to height, I’m 5’9”, 165lbs, and currently on a pedal setting of 3 out of 7 total settings. I’m not sure just how much more height that would allow for, but on 7, it is definitely way out of my height range. You might try emailing the Brooklyn team though, because they might have some height limit details. If I had anyone handy near your height right now, I’d have them test it and give you a definite answer!
Good video thanks
Glad you are liking it! Just bought 2 of the pk11's with the pedal drive for the wife and I. Should be here in 2-3 weeks! Any advice for some beginner kayakers?
Thanks Joey! As I play around with it, I like it more with every outing! Number 1 would be gear for me. Do the kayaks come with paddles? I know mine didn’t, but I have several already. If not, you’ll want them before the kayaks arrive. Life Jackets/PFDs would be my next objective, though that depends on the water you’re going to be on, as well as your state’s laws. You’ll probably also want to eventually see how hard it is to tip over, and how hard it is to recover if tipped over. I have played around with stability, which has been amazing, but I have not pushed it too far as of yet. I’ll do those tests without gear in the kayak. You do want to know this kind of info, especially if you’re going to launch somewhere that winds and waves can get bad. If you’re going to fish, the main rules are as follows: - Try to keep the rod tip near the nose of the kayak. If a big fish runs and you are holding the rod to the side of the kayak, it can really increase the chance of capsizing. - Remember that you are not on shore, and are not reeling in a fish: you are reeling yourself TO the fish. It’s best to keep them at a distance until they tire out a bit before trying to land them. Big and green fish, connected to a line, connected to you and your kayak, can spell trouble. - Secure the lure you are using as quickly as possible when landing a fish. If they flop and the lure is free, it can hang into a multitude of things, including you. - Everyone likes different things when it comes to fishing. Don’t mimic someone else’s layout without doing some testing of your own. Find what you like best, and what suits your fishing style. You also don’t need name brand items. My paddleboard crate was being thrown in the garbage at my work. - Depending upon your financial situation, and how much you want to add to the kayak, prepare to spend either money or time. Enough money can save you time, because you can often purchase ready-made solutions. If not, it’s a lot of trial and error trying to make things work for you and your craft, often out of items or equipment that may not be a perfect fit or work as intended despite your best efforts. I am sure there’s about a million things I have forgotten, so hopefully we get some more comments that help you get the most out of your new kayaks. I hope you have many years of enjoyment with your kayaks! It’s been the best purchase I ever made! Thanks for watching!
I’m glad I came across this video. This Kayak is on Amazon and it has no reviews. This video gave me a more realistic view on how this looks. Thanks for the video.
@AxelfoleyTheGreat Thanks for watching!! As a follow up, I’m still very happy with the kayak. I should also add, make sure to look closely at the Amazon models. They can sometimes be confusing. The older model is a PK10, and this one is a PDL10 or 10.0. The PK10 is a bit different body style and hatch layout, and it is also a propeller drive instead of a fin drive.
Great video, thank you
Does it have “cover plate” for the peddle opening for when you just want to use paddles and not the peddle/fin drive?
I think they are called cassettes for this kind of drive, and I do think a Hobie Mirage Drive style cassette might work. I’ve yet to try it though. It may be easy to fabricate.
I’m very curious to see how stable it is. Can you stand up on it? Also, does it come with w w cover for when you do not want to use the peddle drive?
I can definitely stand on it, and it feels very stable so far. I’m pushing it a little at a time. Stay tuned; there’s an update coming soon!
ya alot of southern states didnt build there infrastructure for extreme weathers and are now experiencing them more which is bad but snow is beautiful im from michigan so its a bit more normal lol but nice video
Thanks Spooky! Our infrastructure is not really prepared for these kinds of things, so it causes major trouble. I still enjoy it when it happens though!
Wow! So big!
Bo, this really touch my heart so much that God allowed and favored you to spend awesome and fun time with your dad on earth doing what he enjoyed doing and it gave you enjoyment to spend that time with him doing what you enjoy as well❤
Sara, I appreciate that. I’m so glad I took these videos to be able to go back and watch.
Awesome fish
Thanks a bunch Silas!
Happy Anniversary to your parents ❤
Thanks! Very thankful for them!
Thanks for the support and making this video! We might as well do our best to ensure the ones we can't keep survive release to be caught again.
I agree 100%
Nice one..good job Bo!
Thanks Sara! Stay tuned for tomorrow!
That's a nice one!
Thanks Sara!
You're welcome 😊
nice one mate, nice idea having floater on multiple softbait, imma gonna try that out...
Definitely give it a try, with or without the float. The water there is shallow with a lot of structure, but if it was deeper, I might forego the float too.
Good stuff mate!❤️
Thanks Leon! I definitely enjoyed myself.
looks like you're doing well! for keeping panfish pinned try side pressure instead of a high rod tip. also, keep your rod tip low while you're making a presentation, the reduced slack gives you more room to set the hook harder and faster. keep it up and you'll be bombing 100 foot casts in no time!
LOL, I don’t know about any 100 foot casts in my future, but I do appreciate the advice! Keeping the rod top low has been a real weak point for me, but I’m definitely learning, and enjoying it enough I only hope to improve some. Thanks!!
Is your body glove still in good shape? Any leaks
Hey Jerry, this board is still going strong. I did read some people had issues with delaminating on them brand new, but this one, having been reconditioned, is holding up very well so far. I’ll add an update video sometime soon!!
