Twin outboard cats are pretty fast in that type of water, takes a lot of extra power to run them down.

Pirate Mark-Yes we have some of the best boatbuilders in all categories in the world in America. Mystic Powerboats owner John Cosker and his crew built this boat from Ocke Mannerfelt's design. With only Mercury Racing 1075s, LUCAS OIL came in 3rd in both the 2014 and 2015 Key West races. They were in the Superboat Unlimited class which also included boats up to 52' and running Mercury Racing 1650hp engines. This year the team has purchased brand new 1650s, hopefully to diminish the catamarans' inherent design advantages. But still, 2 third places finishes in arguably the toughest offshore race course in the world deserves respect, not only for the boat's hull design but the men who race it; Nigel Hook and Michael Silfverberg.

I've watch a LOT of races over the years and I have NEVER seen a boat as fast, as quick and with better handling than the Mannerfelt hull. I watched the 2014 Key West race that Sunday. The Fountain was ahead of them at the 2nd turn buoy but #77 caught them when they straightened out and just walked off and left them. IIRC the Fountain had 1550hp motors and LUCAS had 1075s. PLUS they came in 3rd in that race behind two 50' cats with 3300hp each. A phenomenal boat, the greatest V bottom design ever imho.

Hi Audigiant, Our class, Superboat Extreme, does not limit HP but does have speed limit of 117. During Key West 2012, attempting to decrease the number of classes, SBI merged 3 classes Superboat Unlimited, P1 & P2 into a single class Superboat Extreme. We HATE the speed limit, but we firmly support fewer classes and this was successful during Key West with 10-12 boats starting Superboat Extreme. We really hope more boats come and race and we also hope the speed limit is removed very soon.

Hi Audigiant, Well not exactly because that race had 2 starts ... we were in the first start and the cats were in the second start.
