Navigating the Challenges of Using Multiple POVs in Your Story
In this episode, I discuss the pros and cons of using multiple points of view (POVs) in writing.
Takeaways
- Point of view (POV) is the narrative perspective that guides the reader through the story.
- There are different types of POV, including first person, second person, third person limited, and third person omniscient.
- Multiple POVs can add depth and complexity to a story, but they also come with potential pitfalls, such as character chaos, plot complexity, and reader overwhelm.
- It's important to develop distinct voices for each character and maintain consistent character voices throughout the narrative.
- Before diving into multiple POVs, it's recommended to start with one additional POV and practice distinguishing character voices and maintaining distinct perspectives.

Excellent notes. I've jotted them down, and, for inclusion in my fantasy saga debut, I'll be using a tightened up version of them I think. Thank you.

I have just recently decided to try my hand at writing a novel, hopefully more than one. I had been worldbuilding a fantasy world off and on for around 25 years, initially for a homebrew D&D campaign that never came to be. I kept at it as a hobby because I just enjoyed doing it. It had been my own little world, but I didn't want all those uniquely creative ideas to be buried with me. Anyway, before I attempt a novel, I was going to write a backstory novella or novelette for the character planned for the novel. The backstory involves her parents who become involved in a forbidden love scenario and flee the city. It is intended to be a Romantic Tragedy set in a Fantasy setting. While brainstorming the outlines I came up with some scenes that had me in tears, so I think I'm on the right track.
