If I Loved You - Carousel - Who Sang it Best?
Переглядів 89 тис.11 років тому
Thirteen different singers across different decades singing the same lines of "If I Loved You" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel. Most of these performers are actors who performed the part of Billy Bigelow on stage. Others recorded the song as part of their repertoire. In alphabetical Order. All are great and bring something a little different to the song. Perry Como (1957) 00:15 Robert G...
I'm partial to Goulet. Regardless, that song is so beautiful, it hurts.
gordon, haitt, goulet
Gordon ,Robert, Mario and Anthony Warlow
Gordon & Robert Goulet Love them both but one of the All-time Best R&H tunes! The best classical voice Mario Lanza too soon & too young!
I didn't realize Patrick Wilson had such a wonderful voice the first time I saw him he was a villain in p
I will say this. Patrick Wilson singing If I Loved You is one of my favorite takes on the classic song. There's a performance of him singing it at the Rodgers and Hammerstein 80th Anniversary Concert which I found on Facebook. I really hope someone finds that full video cause I wanna hear him do it fully!
Gordon. Definitely! His breathing. Phrasing. Tone. Sincerity
I’ll say only that we’ve had a lot of great tenors in this country, over the years.
Who Sang it Best? You must be kidding . Gordon MacRae without any doubt. Actually each one of these singers is excellent but the comparison is sort of unfair .Gordon Macrae was so incredible that he diminished the others . The exception to this would be Mario Lanza who had a fantastic voice but didn't do well singing popular songs. A question of style I think.
The year I was born
WOW
Gordon Macrae made it his own ..
\gordon every time, he makes me cry .
I’d have to say Patrick Wilson is my personal favorite. Apparently he performed it at the Rodger’s and Hammerstein 80th Anniversary Concert but I can’t find any video performances of it! Someone upload it!!!
I need to see this whole thing! Has anyone found a full video of this yet?
he is the only worthy thing in the phantom of the opera 2004
I liked the movie very much
Just finished watching aquaman 2 and need to comeback to this one
Yeah right ! Same here !! 🤚😅
Still one of my favorite clips ever
Same. I remember it every like 6 months and come back to watch it like wtf. watching/hearing this is like watching butter melt on a perfect stack of pancakes then taking the first bite
Robert goulet, mario lanza, gordon McRae, john raitt, anthony warlow, andy Williams,
Gordon Macrea. Close second Mario Lanza x
I always think of Carousel as an operetta and somehow John Raitt and Gordon MacRae just fit the bill for me in that department, followed by Mr. Tveit and then Patrick Wilson. It has to be powerful but gentle and some of these recordings - like Goulet and Lanza - just hit it too hard (I was surprised that Lanza wasn't higher ranked for me because I'm a fan.) I can't even discuss the more "night-club" interpretations. Hugh Jackman gets points for throwing in some Billy jauntiness - what a wonderfully charismatic actor. This is a great video - thank you!
All great singers with great versions of a classic song. After a while, it all boils down to personal preference. The song apparently requires an operatic style. Of all the popular singers Como probably had the voice most approaching operatic of his generation, with the possible exception of Eddie Fisher.
My favorite is Julian Ovenden from BBC Proms 2010. He brings me to tears every time. (UA-cam won't let me post the link, but it's on here.)
Gordon McRae for me. Sinatra sang it well though.
Patrick Wilson is my favorite . A very poor clip but his interpretation is best IMO❤
Also check out Nathan Gunn singing it with Kelly O'Hara at the fine Lincoln Center concert version in 2013.
This is a whole new version that makes the song really contemporary and hauntingly beautiful. Jordan is a new leading man for the 2020's! ua-cam.com/video/XFe3qrpGzyM/v-deo.htmlsi=z7d7ph6lD_pvfilK
Robert Goulet
Gordon Macrae hands down on this song.Lyrical quality of his baritone voice legato singing at it's fnest.
Shirley Jones and Frank Sinatra on Franks TV show!
Yes Mario Lanza has a rich mellow tone combined with a fine pitch and good ear.
I like them.all, each One has it's own style, all of them the best
Interesting to hear them all together. You can tell the stage singers from the pop singers in the clean way they hit the top notes. I prefer that style. Macrae, Raitt, Jackman…those who’ve played the character.
Both Gordon Macrae and John Raitt sing beautifully and in character. They are my strongest choices. Robert Goulet is hard to top though.
John Raitt, Gordon MacRae, two great Billy Bigelows and the two best renditions.
Gordon MacRae is my choice.

There should be an update of this to add some of the new ones. How about Jordan Donica?
Can’t separate the ‘song’ as a solo song, so it’s got to be Goulet/ John Raite in the part of Billy Bigelow. If you’re just gonna stand up and sing, it’s Perry Cuomo, but he could NEVER play the part of the “scallywag” in Carousel. Too clean cut. Need a rogue bad boy type like Jackman today.
Gordon McCrae every time. Utterly gorgeous.
Perry Como's voice is solid and convincing and contagious
Best above all others was Robert Goulet followed by Gordon MacRae.
Gordon McRae ❤
I saw Michael Hayden sing it at Lincoln Center (Broadway) in 1994. I had a front row seat; when he started singing If I Loved You, he moved to the front of the stage and sang part of it to the "fourth wall" looking directing at the audience--me. I found the effect hypnotizing: his voice, his beautiful face, his concentration, the yearning this song has. I found myself in tears even while he was singing. I'll never forget that moment. Thank you, Universe!
Robert Goulet
Gordon sang it best.
Robert Goulet was always my favorite
Sexy singer
Mario Lanza ! , but they were all sheer perfection ! Gordon McCrea was so good acting and singing !!
