Can you make these in order to buy them?
I've admired your work for a very long time! How does one go about learning your skills?
Have you ever made Backgammon or Chessboards?
It would be amazing! Please, do it.
Beautiful! They are like M.C. Escher’s work
Thanks, I would love to try this, but just watching the video, I can’t tell exactly what you are doing . A voice over with more detail would be welcome. Great work, btw!
Thank you. In my last two videos, I actually started using voice overs to provide more detailed explanations. You might want to check them out and let me know what you think.
Danke!
Very impressive work! I've only just done a small, geometrical project myself so far and that was plenty tricky. Nevermind rounded or organic shapes! I took note of some of the techniques you used, hopefully my next will turn out better like that! Though I have a question, what kind of tape did you use at around 8:15? Does it need to be wetted?
Thank you! The tape is called veneer tape, and yes, the glue on the tape is activated with water. Wishing you lots of success with your future projects!
While you work on your piece you seem to use any tape to hold the pieces together from side1. Then you tape everything from the other side2. Is that to prevent the glue from coming through the cracks and ruining the side1? Is it also to have 1 smooth tapeline? Will several tapes show and push through into the inlay while pressing? Then you proceed to remove the tape from the side1, so you can place it top down into the glue. While doing that, i find that i keep ripping my work apart and accidentally pull out sensitive corners. Maybe you can help me with a tip :)
Hello, The tape on side 1 is masking tape. It's used to hold everything together and allows me to make adjustments while working on the project. The tape on the other side is veneer tape, which I use for pressing. Masking tape would create too strong of a bond with the veneer during pressing, and it would be difficult to remove without damaging the veneer. The veneer tape is much gentler, allowing for a cleaner removal. If you're having trouble with sensitive corners breaking, I recommend applying a thin layer of wood glue to the veneer beforehand. This will help stabilize it and prevent the corners from breaking as easily. I hope that helps, and good luck with your project!
@karlottoarts thank you so! Applying the wood glue before cutting my corners sounds like a good tip! I will try that!
Thank you so much for this commentary video! I'm working on my first marquetry project based on your rose video and it's so much tougher than expected. I'm really thankful for your commentary because I notice how many steps I missed without it - for example coating the inlayed blue pieces with glue. I thought I was doing it wrong when all my pieces started falling out. And the veneer wood I use kept splitting, so now I will try coating my wood with glue beforehand. It's little steps like this that really make a difference - thank you again! (hello from Canada)
Thank you for your comment! I'm really happy to hear that my video has been helpful for your first marquetry project. I can completely relate - when I started, I faced many challenges as well. The rose project is definitely a challenging one to begin with, but it’s a great opportunity to learn and grow. I wish you all the best and lots of success with your future projects. Keep going!
Wow that is beautiful, how long did that take you to make?
It is very beautiful. Could you maybe share the software you use to make the plan?
Thank you! The software I used for the plan is called GIMP.
@karlottoarts Thank you! Looking forward to your next projects
Great
Hello, very nice job, love it. Did you apply glue before cutting the pieces?
I bet it’s more work, but I prefer the voiceover. Amazing work as always
Excellent work and really enjoy the commentary.
Excellent, keep it coming!
You are great at this. I enjoyed the new format, would like to know some of your tips and thoughts as your doing a project. Always interesting to watch
Another great video. I really enjoy your work. The voice over was great and hope to see more in future videos. This is something I really want to learn how to do. Thanks
That was great! And I really like the format.
that is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this video.
Wow! That is impressive with such accuracy…Did you cut everything free hand or did you set up cutting jigs for consistency? Well done Sir!
Thank you! Everything was cut freehand using just a ruler and a knife. The only "jig" I used was graph paper for guidance.
Flawless work! How long did it take you?
Thank you! I’m not sure of the exact hours, but I had everything finished in about three weeks.
Lindo trabalho, parabéns.
매우 정성스럽고도 정교한 작업입니다. 정말 멋집니다.
Nice! I thought it would be a cutting board before I saw the video. I bet we can use a wood instead using a vernier. Right?
Nicely done!
I like geometric pieces. Great work as always
Beautiful work. Congrats!!!
Very cool! That definitely took a lot of work lining up all the piece’s perspectives. Great job!
Awesome! Did you apply something beyond masking tape to veneer before cutting?
Karl, your work is simply amazing. The patience you have is astounding. How you edge the ebony { I'm assuming} around leaf pedals to show definition has to be the most tedious thing ever, those pieces are so thin. This video is gonna remain on my watch later list forever, looking forward to future projects.
At 80 years old I am just getting into marquetry but I have started with a laser because my hands are not steady enough to cut with a knife. What you have created here is truly amazing and I know I will never achieve The level of quality and beauty that you have. Please post more videos. I really really enjoy watching your work. Tom
Muy bueno
Yeşil yaprakların ışıklandırılması nasıl yapıldı
Süper bir çalışma
WOW!! fantastic work.
Your arts are blowing my mind. :) Amazing precision. I'm trying with marquetery too. I have big problem with cutting some pointed, thin elemenents. They are breaking very often. I dont see it at your work. You have so amazing knife, or is it some way to make vaneer more soft?
Hello, thank you very much. To prevent the veneer from breaking, I often use wood glue or masking tape on the back.
Superb! Karl, do you mind telling me what knife you are using? Thank you.
I use a cheap knife that I bought at a dollar store. Unfortunately, I don't know if the knife has a special name.
@@karlottoarts Thank you.
Karl, can you identify the brand of knife you are using? They look to be much more comfortable that the medical scalpels I've seen others using. Thank you.
Yeah the knife is quite comfortable. But I don't recommend it. I bought it from a dollar store. It is pretty cheap and gets dull pretty quickly.
Where did you get the pattern
For this project, I use a template from the internet, which I then modify if necessary so that I can display it with veneer.
What a beautiful piece of marquetry art Karl ! Can I ask what graphics application you use for your plans ?
Thank you. I primarily use GIMP for my plans.
Your work is incredible! The thinness of the veneer, the detailed plans, and the precision of the whole pattern came together to make something I have genuinely never thought could be done in just contrasting woods. Awesome video, and I hope to see more from you!
lose the music
Hello Karl, How do you stick the isometric/graph paper to the veneer and still be able to peel it off?
Hello, I attached the paper to the veneer with tape, which makes it easy to remove the paper after I cut out the pieces.
@@karlottoarts Thanks for the reply. I have had the idea of taping the veneer surface with yellow tape, then spraying the tape with mounting adhesive and sticking the design paper to it. Do you think this would work or is even necessary? Thankyou again, your work is an inspiration to many of us.
I haven't tried it yet so I can't say much about it. But I would say just give it a try and see if it works for you :)
Thanks. I will try it and see what happens.
very nice work
Very nice, keen to know where you get the coloured veneer from?
Hello, I colored the green veneer myself with wood stain. I bought the yellow veneer from a German veneer store.
