    Has anyone ever sprayed foam on metal porch roof for a house? I would think, if possible, it sure would make the area underneath much cooler.

    If you have a small section of flat roof that was coated with 100% silicone over the modified bitumen. And, you want to install another layer of torch-down bitumen to the whole roof. What would you do to make the torch-down modified bitumen stick to the small section with the silicone coating? Would this work: put another layer of silicone, then spread coarse sand on it, and when dried use the torch-down modified bitumen on it?

    • @captaincucaracha
      @captaincucaracha Рік тому

      Please do not try to torch down the silicone with a layer of sand, that won’t work well and could likely start a fire if a polymer is mixed with it. Removing the whole roof would be the best option, since there is no way to install a new torch down roof over the existing silicone roof. If that is not reasonable, then installing a new layer of nail base for the torch, throughout the whole roof would be best. Probably double the layering to avoid any fire hazards with the silicone below. But it should not have too many issues with a new nail base. Also useful are the cool self-adhered roll torch, no flame and the nail base they have are easier to apply overall

    • @MJ12830
      @MJ12830 Рік тому

      You could install self adhering torch down over the silicone, to avoid entire removal.

    I live in S Florida and have a 1971 built concrete house - block walls and 6" slab decks and slab roof with elastomeric white roof coating. Zero Insulation. I have solar panels on stanchions and they are trapping heat between the panel and the roof, and the heat is passing through the roof. I've thought about laying tpo under the solar panels, but the time to cut/fit around all the stanchions, wiring, etc. is daunting. I'm wondering if a layer of spray foam insulation, topped with elastomeric roof paint might offer a solution. Any insight, experience, comments, welcomed.

    • @JimYeats
      @JimYeats Рік тому

      The panels shouldn’t be trapping heat. If anything they should be shading the roof while also allowing an air gap. Are these panels new and you have just noticed some sort of significant difference, or have these panels been there long term and you’re just trying to sort out why the roof is allowing so much heat to pass through?

    • @frederickmatthews4259
      @frederickmatthews4259 Рік тому

      @@JimYeats I initially thought what you are thinking - ie the panels will shade the roof. In actuality, the heat transfers through the panels and then is trapped between the underside of the panel and concrete roof deck.....which according to thermodynamics the heat radiates through the roof to the inside of the house.

    • @JimYeats
      @JimYeats Рік тому

      @@frederickmatthews4259 Maybe you have a very unique situation. I guess I could see if you have a flat roof and block sides that extend past the roof height and then solar panels on top of the roof and you have basically created a hot box, then maybe. But for everyone else out there solar panels on a standard roof reduce heat since the panels reflect sunlight, and there is an air-gap that doesn’t easily allow for the transference of heat, particularly on a normal roof where a breeze is removing that air between the panel and roof.

    • @frederickmatthews4259
      @frederickmatthews4259 Рік тому

      @@JimYeats You are failing to understand the solar panels DO NOT reflect sunlight any more than a black asphalt surface reflects sunlight.

      @@frederickmatthews4259 My apologies, I used the wrong terminology. It doesn’t change the fact that solar panels cool a standard roof compared to not having solar panels.

    That shit is garbage... after a few months it looks like a the moon surface. Al the moisture trapped in the BUR blisters the shit out of the foam. Thermal scans should be required before applying this BS. This system just rapes the owner once the foam fails and it needs a real roofing system with a double tear off cost. That’s why they only offer a material warranty and not a NDL... meaning that if their roofing system fails because of the existing, they ain’t paying for shit...lol

    • @insulatedroofingcontractor9967
      @insulatedroofingcontractor9967 6 років тому

      Hi JG 3542. There are a few issues with your comment that I'd like to address. 1 - No, it doesn't look like the moon's surface after a few months. A good installer is able to install the foam so that it is extremely smooth, as is visible in this video and the rest on our channel. 2 - We do perform thermal scans on every job and remove any trapped moisture to prevent blisters. 3 - We offer full system, leak-free warranties. You may be referring to a different contractor who only offers material only warranties. 4 - We don't apply foam to a roof with a substrate that appears likely to fail, so the scenario you described of the existing roofing failing and us not paying is extremely unlikely. Thank you for your interest in IRC, I'd love to answer any questions you may have that pertain to our company.

      I had a rigid urethane roof put on the bigger roof of my apartment building over tar and gravel. That was September of 1996. When we sold the place in 2018, the 3800 sq ft roof was in excellent condition with the exception of maybe 2 sq ft where tree branches scraped the coating off the foam. The buyer opted to repair only a few places where there were nickel to quarter sized holes and will have it recoated next Spring 2019. The original color is the light gray. the neighboring building has a white foam roof that is just too bright to look at in the mornings. We found acorns stuffed into some of the holes possibly done by birds. When the buyer walked the roof with his inspector, it most certainly did not look like a moonscape. They were surprised to hear that it was as old as it is. I have to say that the top floor apartments were at least 15 degrees F cooler in the Summer than before. In the 22 years since the foam roof was installed we did not have a single leak. I put zero maintenance into it. The roof was low sloped 1 in 16 with curbs at the low end so there was always some standing water at the low ends and it never leaked. The roof is over the 3rd floor and the heat from the second floor units warms the top floor units. 3rd floor tenants reported lower natural gas bills in the winter. This is is Northern California SF East Bay Area so I do not know how other weather conditions affect it. I hope this helps. I am sold on rigid urethane foam roofing.
