I love to hike, wild camp and make videos of my little adventures, exploring nature and marvelling at the mighty and micro wonders of the world.
My wonderful wife Max and I are blessed with two beautiful dogs Bessie and Hetty and make videos of their big misadventures with friends - “Break In” being their big debut!
Also to come will be Guerrilla *Tree* Planting with progress updates, although these may be a few months to years off.
Happy to hear from you if you have any comments or questions, I hope you enjoy.
Happy trails : )

Giant Sequoia 2024 update
In 2015 I started growing sequoiadendron, and in 2020 I planted out the first three. In spring 2024 I planted another 5 and we return in October to see their progress.
This November I will plant out another ten and have started the giant batch with 1,200 seeds bought from Sheffields Seeds promising 51% germination (let's see!).
If you want to grow your own, you must check out George Maier and William Jin's work at Superlative Trees. They have trialled many conditions to maximise sequoiadendron germination, and it is this technique I use now. They also have YT how-to videos.

September 2020. Simon, Andrew and I managed to get 5 days out on the South West Coast Path, wild camping along the way. I held off editing the footage until now (January 2021) to re-live those wonderful days of freedom and adventure - just what you need during a long winter COVID lockdown. I plan to get back there in summer 2021 and pick up where we left off. If you're thinking about it, do it!...

Nice ! I am also growing them. Also make videos :-)
Beautiful video thank you for the sharing 👍 👍
Good on you man !!
Ticks - oof! How much bother are they when hiking the Pyrenees? Did any of you get biten?
@@Greg.Sutton Ticks preferred me. Horse flies preferred Chèvre. Yes, had to pull a few out. They grow in numbers in high summer and where livestock graze. Hate ticks!
Cool, but next time try pure perlite to germinate...it will come out well👍
@@thegreenmanalishiyamadori371 ah okay, thanks - I’ll try some in that 👍🏼
@jamaxadventures2068 you're welcome👌🏻
I love the Pyrenees and watching these is making me miss them right now. Been lucky enough to visit 4 times so far - all on a bike. 3 times riding on road and once off road. The off road was savagely hard (for me) but it was awesome to see a side of the area you do not from the roads..... this however is another level - beautiful! Well filmed! Those 2 lakes where you took the group photo at about 3:30 is that Lac de cap de Long? If so i am hoping to ride that area next year!
Glad you enjoyed them! The 3:30 pic was taken by a photographer we met at the Hourquette d’Aubert (such luck!), the long lake is Lac d’Aubert, a deviation we took to bypass Col de Madamete. One more vid to come this winter, then we’ll pick up the trail in Sept ‘25. Happy trails
@jamaxadventures2068 - ahh OK so Lac D'Aubert is the next lac up / over from de cap de long so your in a similar area. I think I might even be able to access lac Aubert aswell by bike on the same road up from Saint Lary Soulan. Looks amazing... gonna be a good day out riding that.
@ yes you can, there is a road from Lary to Fabian, then up to Aubert 👍🏼
That Tourmalet valley up the side through the village of Viella is stunning! Been lucky enough to ride my off road bike up there a couple of times. Then on up to Pic du Midi - now that is hard on a bike! I would however highly recommend anyone walking the GR10 to take a divert up to pic du Midi observatory at 2876m as it would be an epic walk and on good gravel track - stunning views back down the Luz valley.
Jamax try to emulate atmosphere conditions - increase atmosphere pressure up to 2.3 - 3 and increase CO2 concentration and humidity and you can speed up growth like in Noah times before big flood
do experiment how magnetic field will increase growth or electromagnetic field putting cord around roots and every seed in own condition
@@Petya_KM interesting! Lots of questions. Have you tried this? Is this just for germination or first years growth?
No i just thinking about but right now our country start war in ukraine. But this information about pressure goes from archeologists who tell about big grouth trees because of pressure was 2.3 -3 and humidity and oxygen 31 percrnt concentration. Right now 21.
But for trees grow co2 need , for animals o2 need, so was somw cool condition when big trees created o2 up to 31 percentage and from anywhere also have co2
@ I think it is not the country that wars but those in power. I do not know anyone who wants war, do you? We are the country, not the few who have control, spending our taxes on weapons. Peace ☮️
What about some Gingko, Wollemi and Araucaria’s?
They say that awe is good for us and I would agree. Some pretty far out awe moments here. You got the feet sorted and the Lanshan. Good going. Mark
Cheers Mark. I would agree and the GR10 certainly provides an awesome stage for a raw and youthful existence far from day to day life. May upgrade the Lanshan next year ; )
@@jamaxadventures2068 A pleasure Jam. Yeah, awe is all around there - a reality/dimensional shift for sure. I use the Lunar Solo - for higher up you'll need something else I'd imagine. Take care.
Considering the Durston x-mid 2 which will be same weight as Lanshan but much stronger. Like the space for a few extra 100g vs a 1 man tent. Reasonable price too
@@jamaxadventures2068 Yeah, good choice - Durston are a good brand. I reckon you've bought it already.
nice vid bro. Maybe try getting them in the ground early to reduce transplant shock
Cheers. Do you mean plant them when they are younger and less rooted in the pots?
@@jamaxadventures2068 yes. :) Some kind of shelter may help them be less exposed as well as your seedbed trial shows they like growing together.
Full happy view. I enjoyed the vibe throughout - great views and first pitch. Ha, you chose your time to arrive at the steep decline. A good descent mind you. Well, next one. Mark
@@WyeExplorer thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. There’s one more part to come this year, and we will go back to finish 3/4 in 2025 4/4 and 2026
@@jamaxadventures2068 A pleasure there Jam. I'll keep an eye out - I have the other to watch yet. Peace.
Looking forward to seeing some updates on these guys. Incredible growth in such a short space of time. I tried growing some - only managed to get one to germinate then it died as I accidentally let the seed tray get flooded :( Wishing you more luck than I had!
Thank you
Great video!
Respect mate. I started doing my own projects growing all sorts of trees for the past 4years I’ve only got 10 giant sequoias all officially Sprouted 21,3,21. Lost loads but the 10 I got are looking good about your sized ones. They ar going out this year can’t wait
@bencollyer2296 nice! I plan on getting my 10 planted in December. I run @salhousecommunitytreenursery (Facebook page) and have grown probably 50+ tree species, sequioadendron are by far the hardest to get past 3 years. Have fun planting Where about are you?
Have you tried root pruning on any? Their roots seem to be so vigorous which tells me they might love some chopping off and starting fresh rather than the old channels.
@@artistnumber12 I read or heard somewhere that they’re quite fussy when it comes to their roots. The ones that I’ve previously grown in air pruned root trainers have done very well. I’m going to use root trainers initially for my next big batch
Thats amazing!! It will grow into a great forest
I was just at trail of 100 giants, the forest surrounding the grove is burnt all the way . A control burn that became uncontrollable is what I hear, probably doesn’t help the govt is manipulating weather
Did the giants survive the burn?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've had the pleasure of seeing the General Sherman. Pictures don't do the size justice. It's incredible. It's like standing next to a giant building or something. Just massive. Also, I've been (many times) to a lesser known, but very interesting stand of Dawn Redoods, outside of Foresthill, California. The rare, 3rd type of redwood, and IMO, the most beautiful! They lose thier needles in the fall, need more water, and I would think would grow even better in the UK!
@@mp1039 ohhh, one day I’d love to come to California and see the redwoods - one day. I’ve grown some dawn redwoods, just need to find them the right home along with another 10 new sequioadendron ready for planting this winter!
California Redwoods that are self sewing is a very good sign!
Hi from France! Thanks for making this video, it was fun to see several trees we also have here and have planted. Lots of sweet chestnuts and oaks around here, so we planted a few of those, of course. The sycamores spring up everywhere and I collected a bunch of seedlings from the playground (with my kid) where they had sprouted in a sandbox and weren't going to survive anyway Actually, I wasn't aware they were sycamores until I watched your video! I also have one giant redwood that sprouted in April so it's still very small, hopefully it will make it. Another one of my favourite trees is the catalpa, I have about 5 of those (3 in the ground, 2 still in pots). I also have 35 avocado seedlings and about 20 Washingtonia palm tree seedlings from this year but those are all tropical so I don't really expect them to survive the winters here.
@@vegardno Bonjour! Glad you enjoyed. Growing from seed is fun and so rewarding. I’ve started a community tree nursery and we are growing hundreds of trees now to give out to the local community. Happy growing!
Where around the world do the Giant Sequoias grow? Well, I can tell you, they are growing ...actually in many countries! There are arboretums and collections of trees around the world, in England, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, even Romania, where former members of nobility in the 1700's and the 1800's collected strange looking trees from around the world, as curiosities. There are Monkeypod, Araucarias, Dawn Redwood, and many others, also Sequoias having reached tremendous size in the meantime. There in Vienna, Austria I know of at least two places that have Redwood groves, planted not to preserve the species, but to be showpieces, and they are doing a great job in that sense. And, recently the Wollemia Pine, a rediscovered tree that was thought to be extinct millions of years ago, preserved only as fossils, was found alive and ..not well, but alive, and has since then been planted in many places around the world. I am happy to say that I feel that the movement of reforestation around the world is gaining momentum, still far outperformed, of course, by the destruction of forests. But we shall see!
Don't you need to cold stratify them?
@@thegeniusofthecrowd354 if you’re keen to get growing then keep at room temp to begin with and a few eager seeds will say hello. After 14 days pop them in the fridge for 8 weeks, checking every 5 days and potting up new shoots. Happy growing!
Thanks for vidéo I also grow the giant séquoia I have 50 in a garden 😊
@@Séquoia8055 amazing, you could create something quite special with 50!
To all the people who waste their time protesting Climate Change.. they should each go plant 100 trees
Exactly. Actions speak louder than words
Nice job great exciting work
I uses scissors to cut out seedlings from paper towel and gently transplant paper and seedling in a potting mix . This greatly reduces chance of root damage in transplant .
That sounds like good advice.
I tried planting trees in my neighborhood. I put them in inconspicuous spots and people still bothered them and broke the branches off. It’s so upsetting.
I feel for you. Growing trees around people is harder than around wildlife. Just keep trying like nature does
Would it hurt to cut around the seed and plant with the root attached to the paper towel?
That’s a good idea which I think would work well
Amazing that such gigantic trees grow from such small seeds.
Good man👍🏼
where do you get all the acorns from and when?
In autumn, some years there are many, other years there are none. Oaks and other species have ‘mast years’ in theory to keep populations of acorn eating things in check. You’ll be able to tell in the summer what is growing. They grow so easy
@@jamaxadventures2068 danke danke
Are the trees native to your environment ?
Thank you for caring about trees we need more people like you . X
I will kindly suggest planting only native trees. In particular UK keystone trees. Not all trees are equally beneficial. Why plant what will be effectively just a sculpture since it is so far from it's native habitat? "In the UK, one of the best examples of a keystone tree species is the oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petraea)."
I have grown and planted 2,000+ native species too
will someone be willing to ship a few seeds of Giant Redwoods to EU, was looking for them locally but that become mission impossible?
You could try buying from Chiltern seeds or direct from USA. Good luck
@@jamaxadventures2068 will try, UK is also not in EU some maybe will be an issu with phitosanitary certificate, but I have friends living there 🙂
Sumatra PDF will open/read that pdf a million times faster than acrobat does
Hey I'm born and raised in Nor Cal. You're planting those sapplings too deep. Keep the root collar just barely proud of grade.
Hi Ben, thanks for the advice. I’ve checked the video and yes we did set that one too low. I was quite ‘green’ back then but now always plant with the root collar at the same level to soil line. Cheers
@@jamaxadventures2068 Hey if you ever decide to come see the native habitat for these trees, gimme a shout and I'll happily play the role of local tour guide (giganteum and sempervirens habitats are about 4-5 hrs apart)
@@benmiller3358 I really hope to one day , very kind of you - thanks 🌲
why are you planting non-native trees. you are NOT doing any good for the environment
I have grown and planted over 2,000 native trees
Glad to see our California trees being helpful far outside of their range. Since you already have them there, perhaps you could air layer or take cuttings from existing trees.
I heard they are cloning the giants in California… and giving enough sunlight and water they can grow 6-10 feet a year.. but 1-2 feet is common when small..
massive legend, so powerful
can i make a guess? They all died, right? I have raised between 400 to 500 little trees over the last couple years and all but one died within 6-12 months. I could never get them through the winter. During warm summer months they are fine outside, but as soon as i put them inside, they die.
Ah man, sorry to hear about your losses. Many of mine died but not all. I’ve around 14 still growing, 6 of which are still to be planted. Damping off is the main challenge. Google Redwoodworld where Ron gives the best advice for growing and planting your own
@@jamaxadventures2068 thanks a lot, ill look into it
We have 8 in Bell Vue Park Newport and surprisingly 2 in my town if Risca . Beautiful trees. Great video.
Did you use stratification? 2 weeks of stratification improves success rate by a lot for giant sequoia seeds
Yes, in a bag of damp soil in the fridge
I would rather suggest to people reading the Woody plant seed manual from USDA
Amazing! Wow
helps to soak them in a bowl of water for 24 hours before putting them into moist paper towels in my experience.
How are they going James?
temperature is the main driver in plant growth then light water nutrition obviously all are important .
