Utterly lovely song - heartfelt, melancholy, yearning. This comes from a long-gone time when you could get a deal with a major label, retreat to a remote gamekeeper's cottage in deepest Ireland, and conjure up four lovely albums that almost no one bought. Subsequently, Terry became a Pogue, while Gay reinvented herself in Auto da Fe. There's a palpable sense of rural isolation about their story, and especially this song, that I recognise ... been there, done that, here in upland mid-Wales ... lost love, silent days, cold nights.

Joyous! One of Sandy's finest vocal performances on the studio version of this (among so many) and this live performance is excellent too. Like Fairport's epic A Sailor's Life it tells a sad tale of old England pretty well. All the Sandy vocal tracks on Fotheringay's first album are top notch.
