Mothership Marine, established 2013, are experts in electric narrowboats with an emphasis on solar powered boats. ‘A majority of the power used on the boat comes from the sun’ says owner Tim Knox.
Technological improvements in batteries and solar panels together with tumbling prices mean better quality boats at more affordable prices.
Mothership Marine designed their own solar panels for canal boats, they fit seamlessly to the roof and can be walked on.
Whilst we build extremely modern narrowboats much is done to maintain a ‘country cottage’ ambience inside the boat. These boats are an antidote to the stress of modern life.
Electric motors are near silent. In demonstration, we often film conversations with owners and experts whilst travelling on an electric narrowboat. Subjects have included retirement, entrepreneurs, innovation, dyslexia, the environment etc.

Diesel to Electric - Part 5. Owners verdic on converting a diesel narrowboat to electric.
@mothership_marine Owner and banjo player Steve take his narrowboat Miss Amelia and her namesake, his daughter, Millie out on the River Nene for the fisrt time. Steve is returning to his home mooring in Rugby.
En route he talks about the conversion process and renovations he made to the boat himself while the Mothership team carried out their tasks.
Jobs performed by Mothership were as follows
- Take out old diesel motor
- Prepare engine room for new motor
- Install new High Torque PMAC Electric Motor
- Install lithium batteries
- Install Victron equipment
- Install solar panels
- Install Reflecs stove, calorifier and radiator
- Survey hull
- Repair hull and black
- Reworked kitchen
Jobs performend by Steve
- Renovate water tank
- Paint topsides
- Fit new solid wood floor
- Repair window seals
- Various other maintenance task
I left Steve later that day happy that he had things under control.
However a few day later the weather drastically changed and Steve had an unplanned stay in Wellingborough.
Here's the full story
The downs and ups of narrowboating life
The backstory - Steve, the banjo player, set off on his lovely boat Miss Amelia to his home mooring a little over a month ago, full of optimism. Then, the heavens opened and the normally very navigable River Nene turned into a torrent of brown angry water, very much of a soul searching downer. His passage was brought to an end in Wellingborough. He was forced to stay for a month. There were times when the Wellingborough embankment was seriously flooded we were in fear of Steve losing his boat and possibly his banjo. Fortunately the local community stepped in, hats off to Prestige Scaffolding prestigescaffold/ who, free of charge, pitched in and saved Miss Amelia and another live-aboard narrowboat that was stuck close by. There were also 3 visits from the local fire brigade too. Each a heartwarming moment.
Another person of note was Andy Hall from the Environment Agency who over the last month got to know Steve well, the two were constantly in touch and last Friday Andy called Steve to say that the month long strong stream advice has been lifted and he could make his way up to Northampton. Thanks to Andy for looking after Steve over the last month.
In walks Chop. Chop has a very traditional narrowboat and is based at Blackthorn Lake Marina. He has a great knowledge of the river and agreed to accompany Steve up to Northampton.
Journeys like this need to be broken down into chunks. The goal is of course to get to the end but with the river flow seriously against them they had to play it by ear and think of their ‘get out’ points along the way. These were White Mills Marina and The Northampton Boat Club with the end destination at Northampton Marina in the centre of Northampton town.
A quick recap as to what Miss Amelia has in terms of equipment, a 30kWh lithium battery bank, 1.6kW tiltable solar panels, a 15kW water-cooled PMAC motor with 143Nm of torque. No generator.
Steve and Chop set off in the rain at about 9am on Saturday morning, the current was very strong against them and they were making 3km/hour overground using between 2 to 3kW of power. When the river gets narrower the flow gets faster and more power is needed. Around 10am they were overtaken by a diesel narrowboat who said that they probably wouldn’t wait for Miss Amelia at the next lock. Steve and Chop, as predicted, did that lock on their own, however with Steve’s confidence in the system growing, he pushed the throttle forward a little more and by the next lock Miss Amelia had caught up with the diesel boat.
For me, as a boat builder, and the electrical system designer, I’m very proud of what myself and the team have been able to put together. In a world full of naysayers it sometimes feels like we’re pushing against a strong current in our day to day working life. But on this occasion, and with brass knobs on, we say Up Yours, love Tim and the team.
Miss Amelia arrived at Northampton Marina mid-afternoon. She started her day with a battery state of charge of 98% and arrived with 52%. The motor temperature never got above 24 degrees centigrade and in fact Steve only had the water pump running intermittently.
Pictured here is Steve, the banjo player, and Miss Amelia in one of the final locks on the Northampton Flight just about to join the Grand Union canal. This is an Up. Congratulations to Steve.

The next stage of Miss Amelia’s conversion from diesel to electric takes place. While she was out of the water we thought it prudent to get the hull surveyed and act on any repairs that need to be made. For a boat 25 years old she was found to be in good shape when her hull was surveyed, but there was a need for a little welding. Nothing critical, this was ‘stitch in time’ thinking. The engine ...

Beautiful boat
Thank you very much!
When Steve was thinking about a life afloat he came over to me and we had a long chat about living on a narrowboat, which I’d been doing for a few years by that stage. I think it’s my turn to get in touch with him and have a discussion about his boat. I’m one of those with a BMC 1.5 engine.
I’m sure he’ll be happy to talk. And his boat is lovely and warm now 😀
@ Yes I’ll be visiting him in a few weeks and may even be in touch with you at some stage …
Oh bliss, no noise, no fumes
You really get to enjoy the countryside - cheers Tim
The success of this project opens up serial hybrid narrowboating to a much larger segment of people afloat on the cut. There must be 1000's of older narrowboats afloat with diesel engines coming to the end of their economic life.
These old BMCs never die.
We're hoping so!
Such a fascinating series. And now it is a delight to see a happy owner reaping the benefits of your expertise. I hope many more owners see how relatively easy it is to change over and enter the exciting new world of cleaner propulsion. Thank you so much.
That's really kind of you - all the best Tim and the Mothership Crew
Best thing about electric power is the quietness just great
@chriswalker8378 its amazing
Agreed Chris
Thank you so much for sharing amazing figures considering the cloudy weather your definatley the leaders in electric boats well done to the team I've seen other company's and sadly they have failed your the top company

Another interesting video, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful woodwork and interior design. Only thing I would like to see is a gasket around the locker and engine bay lids to stop water getting in.
Thank you Sue for you kind comments. Because there is a lip on the hatch going down which acts as a drip there's no need for a gasket. Best regards Tim

Love the natural teak decking.. much classier than rubber matting or sand paint!!!.❤️🙏🇬🇧
I totally agree! Tim
A near 30yr old boat and the owner loves her. I really find that refreshing, being a bit of a boater myself, all I tend to hear along the canals are folk moaning about their own boats, 'flash new ones' too. Great to see him loving his boat and having what we all will have to have at some stage, an electric motor. Quiet and very peaceful I would imagine. Great video series.
Thanks for that - there's a lot of life in these old boats and it's nice to see the well cared for. Cheers Tim
Nice KISS video(keep it simple stupid) far easier for people to understand the importance of prop selection 👍👍
Thanks for that - Props are really important - people see it as a dark art but it's not really - it's just complicated with so many variables - cheers Tim
Is there a calculation that includes weight, resistance, motor, rpm, and prop to help with this?
Hi, do you mean the weight of the motor or boat. I'm not sure what you looking to calculate. Tim
@@mothership_marine The weight/mass of the boat - wondering if there's a formula to work to? I fully agree about the prop size, and the demo and explanation make perfect sense.
Must be one of the cheapest interiors I’ve seen on a so called modern boat, cheap wood and workmanship, looks like you got a load of softwood floorboards and used them everywhere, floor, walls, roof, cupboards. Hardly a professional fit out ☹️😂
Hi Paul - this isn't a modern narrowboat - it's nearly 30 years old and is very much of it's time. However, the owner who lives on her, and is very fond of the boat, wanted to upgrade the propulsion system. Diesel motor gone, inefficient coal stove gone. Hope you have a better idea of what's been done. Tim
As the expression goes “You can’t make a silk purse out of a Sow’s ear” as I said the interior woodwork is shocking, “Scaffolding planks” comes to mind.
@@paulduff3810 I think its a great boat - maybe my photography isn't doing it justice. Over and out.
Beautiful boat. Thank you for the tour. Just a little tip for the cameraman: point the camera down a bit.
Thanks Simon - I'll pass on the tip to my trusted assistant😁
Great job! What is the battery voltage, 24V or 48V? How many Ah do the batteries have on the boat?
Hi Wayne - 48V and 600ah. Cheers Tim
@@mothership_marine Thanks. That is a decent amount of battery power. I presume the boat also has a generator to recharge the battery if needed.
@@waynegardella6263 yep that's right a Mase. Cheers Tim
That is an excellent explanation.
Thanks Keith - but there is a lot more to it than this - so many variables it hard to talk about them all. Fluid dynamics is really complicated and very mathematical. Cheers Tim
Great job again Tim. And congratulations John, I'm glad your happy with the new motor and prop.
You and me both!
🥰Thank you so much Tim. Excellent video and now I finally understand why Narrowboat Watt Way works so well. 🎉🍺🎉
You're welcome Anita
Brilliant. Loving this journey.

Could have done better 😮
Always trying to improve - how would you suggest?
@@mothership_marine looked cheap In some places, don’t think many of the items would last long.
@@johntreadwell6846 This is a well crafted boat, very similar to Shine who looks as good as did when launced 7 years ago. This is a very easy boat to maintain. Might help if you are a little more specific John
Hi Tim, Why are the electrical components not situated in the engine bay where there is ample space? Considering the weight of the batteries I understand that they need to be easily accessed and thus the engine bay could be awkward. Finally, have you ever considered building cabin walls and the roof out of fiberglass/carbon fiber? Mark Alberta, Canada
Hi Mark - it always gets a little damp in the engine bay because its not insulated. And yes I have considered a fibreglass cabin but everyone boat is so different and it would be pointless building a mould. Tim
In the interests of perfection, I think we still need to have the HVO conversation, Tim!
I agree with you Jonathon - all the best - Tim
what is the costs involved please
It all depend on how much we do and how much you do and what you want to achieve - short distance vs long distance - please call me
I would think a small ATW (air to water) heat pump would truly green the boat and provide you with heat, cooling and domestic hot water. Add batteries, lose the diesel heater and add more solar. (fold out wings) A 3000 watt petrol generator is cleaner than burning diesel if you need supplemental electricity in the winter to make up for low PV output. Shore power to charge your batteries when the tariff is low might also be an option. Your electrical cabinet and motor looks really good. Do you have a fan to cool the electrical cabinet?
Thanks for your comments. Petrol is difficult on a boat. It's a little bit dangerous. Heat pumps use a lot of power. There is a vent in the cupboard but in actual fact there's not too much heat because the isolation transformer is elsewhare. Tim
Looks fantastic. Well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Very handsome boat indeed! And green!❤🎉❤
Thanks. Tim
@@mothership_marine do costs for a conversion vary or are you at a stage where it more or less has become a conversion kit style pack? 👏

@@mothership_marine exciting to follow your progress!
Loving this. Something I’d like to consider if and when I move onto the canals. How much does it cost to convert appx ? And intrigued either way the fibreglass hatch. Whys it fibreglass ? Is it that much lighter ? Brilliant conversion. Looks great. 👍
Thanks Trevor - fibreglass is stong, durable and most importantly light. Cheers Tim
I can’t believe that’s the same engine bay. In the first video in this series the boat looked like it was about to sink, now it’s just stunning. Well done to you and your team!
Thanks Malcolm - Steve was a lovely customer and we wanted to do our best for him. It's great to bring new life into a boat that was built last centry! Cheers Tim
Flexible solar panels lay flat on the roof. This would allow a Roomba-type robot to clean the panels automatically. There is absolutely no reason for anybody to put a diesel motor or a liter of liquid fuel into a narrow boat ever again. Even cloudy days will provide enough power to keep the batteries topped up and all electrical amenities powered sufficiently. That's all we really need to know.
Actually Jimbo the panels are self cleaning - Heron shit being the exception! Cheers Tim
Great presentation. That is also one of the cleanest narrow boats i have seen design and fiinish wise. Wiring is on point, everything is just so, wonderful.

Excellent tour, lovely boat. How much travel can you get on a full charge or half charge? And if the weather turns off gray for a few days with rain, and you are not near anyplace to get shore power, what then? I love the concept, but what are the contendgucies?
Hi Paul - It depends on how fast you go and how much sun is around. Normal boat speed takes 1kW and the sun can produce that. Helius has 38kWh in her battery. I have a feeling you didn't pick that there was a large marine generator on board. However on our boats generators tend to be the most expense and least used item on board. Cheers Tim
@@mothership_marine no I am sorry I didn't see the generator. I am 66yrs old and I see the world trying to get away from fossil fuel. Any time I see something new, like your boat, I find myself submerged in questions. Solar is a great alternative and I was just looking for a better understanding. Thank you for your response.
@@paulbauswellsr3296 You're welcome
All fantastic and quiet, and eco, etc etc. But slightly surprised you didn't fit a "azi-pod" instead of a traditional prop-shaft and rudder? Then, along with a bow-thruster, the boat could turn in it's own length (ie: spin on the spot) for super-manoeuvrability!
