My favorite fractals I've made so far with Video Feedback Device & remote fishes (shorter version)
Here, live images of fish are used as the secondary input on the Video Feedback Device, influencing the fractals being made.

Three high definition camera feedback loops and beam-splitter glass, combined with an Insanity Mode of a feedback loop between feedback loops themselves, mix together to create fractal sets within other fractal sets, cell structures, strands of DNA, trees, insects, tentacled primordial creatures - a combination of movements and settings that result in never identical ephemeral visual output.
New anodized aluminum shafts are used with Ewellix linear bearings for much improved sliding and rotating. The wooden linear motion transfer parts are replaced with radial bearings for improved rotating and zero-dead zone when pushing and pulling the shafts back and forth.
Both structures have two HD monitors (with analog hue/contrast/saturation knobs) at right angles to one another, with a sheet of beam splitter glass between them. The feedback loop between these two monitors, the reflection in the glass, and the camera, creates fractals in real-time, without a computer.
Using the video switchers, the left monitor structure can interact with the right monitor structure, and vise-versa. When they both interact with each other at the same time, yet another feedback loop is created, producing unexpected and strange results (thus, Insanity Mode).

Switching quickly between an input and the camera looking at that input on a screen instantly "traps" that image within the system, now cycling 'round and 'round between camera and screen, contorting with each iteration.

Feedback loops are all-important, and are present in ecosystems, geological systems, social systems, biological systems, and it’s no wonder the images created using the structure are so organic looking. Gazing into this feedback allows for insights into the magic of recursion.
But where do these images come from you might be thinking, and why do they actually exist? Once initiated, they come from themselves, and exist because they exist.
Imagine a dark room where a camera is looking at a screen which displays the output of that camera. The screen will stay void of an image forever until a “spark of life” (say the lighting of a match) brings forth an image, which will then continue on and on, changing through iterations. That pattern now exists within the wires of the system, long after the original spark is gone.

But, then imagine something blocks the camera’s view of the screen, just for an instant. All of a sudden, the image goes out, and the camera sees a dark screen again, which displays what the camera sees, etc... now blackness replaces the pattern. A pattern that can never be exactly repeated.
It would be impossible to find these feedback images by looking at the wiring of the system, by dissecting the cameras and monitors. This may be like the mind - you can't find consciousness just by inspecting the nerves and connections of the brain. The mind is a pattern that grows through feedback, iterations over time. Once that pattern is interrupted (something blocks the camera's view of the monitor), the pattern disappears, leaving just the organic mechanism.
So this may answer the question "where do we go when we die?" - the same place the snowflake's pattern goes when the snowflake melts?

WOW! I've been playing with video feedback for about as long as you have... but I think I can safely say you have taken it to it's ultimate conclusion!!! But I've got to question "final build"? ;)
This is amazing... I've been playing round with video feedback (mostly on old school CRT TV) for years and years and years, and I've never seen anything quite as... ... ... intricate as this. Do you have a video online where you go deeply into the specifications of what you're doing? Once you've got the controls "dialled in" just right, it looks a lot like the IFS fractals you can generate on a computer. Imagine a stage show with a human drummer and somebody operating one of these in time to the music... You could create a 1990's techno video without a computer in sight.... Even though your cameras and monitors are... technically... computers... but let's just overlook that ;)

Love this video, and learning about how you have developed this over many years, its impressive. For 4k have you considered incorporating computers, using a touch designer patch with luma/chroma controls mapped to midi knobs? Maybe latency would make it not as beautiful. I love the fractals, originally started looking more after seeing your fish video. I have a set up of vision mixers, processors crt screens and a matrix, statted doing diagrams a bit like yours but so far just experimenting, seeing the fixed goal you have and what youve achieved is inspiring
Thanks, yes that midi control is an option, I don’t know what the latency would be like. I’m still holding out for some kind of direct control of a monitor without having to go through a computer like that. Incredible device. Thanks for sharing your hard work. Any reason you couldn't just use some 4K OLED monitors with software controls for hue/brightness/contrast/saturation/etc?
Could pass each video signal through a computer and use midi to control software.l that would change those parameters. As for software to control the monitor itself (where the video would not need to go through the computer) , there are monitors that do connect to a computer like that. Not sure if using external midi knobs would be possible with that option. Also, I haven’t found 4k switchers as small or as inexpensive as the HD ones I’m using. Might just have to wait some years from now when everything will be 4k, like I had to wait to be able to do it in HD.

Is there a reason why you couldn't use live color grading software + some color wheels to get a similar effect to the knob adjustments currently? That would allow you to bump the resolution. If not, I work in the film industry along some video playback guys -- I can ask them if there's anything?
I think there’s a midi control knob solution, but would be pretty involved though. Also, hard to find 4k switchers that are small and don’t cost a fortune. I guess computers could be used for that too. Not sure I want to do all that though. In 2012 I wanted to go from SD to HD and it wasn’t feasible then. I’m thinking in a few years everything will be 4k and it will be possible to go from HD to 4k without needing all the computer stuff.

Those are the control modules the are part of the Panasonic monitors. I lengthened the control cables to be able to bring them up front (the cable that attaches the module to the monitor is very short).

@@thelightherder thank you! missed that part oopsie. also dont you prefer to use a midi controller instead of that? that way you can assign whatever setting you need to a knob, fader, joystick or whatever input you desire while also using any monitor you want. the current monitor looks good and does the job but probably there are more modern and better monitors out there
@@danielliberty7559 At some point I would like to use 4K monitors, and the control knob situation is tricky with that. When you say midi controller, do you mean connecting a midi-enabled monitor to a computer, and then using a midi module connected to the computer? Any specific information would be appreciated.
@@thelightherder i am still a beginner in this so take everything i say with a grain of salt: pass your camera input through a computer that will perform all of the graphical manipulations like contrast, brightness and everything you want. the computer will perform these tweaks through an app and there are a couple of options but id highly recommend "touchdesigner" which works great with live input and output. the manipulations will be done according to input from a midi controller that is connected to the computer via usb or midi cable usualy. after that you output to your monitor for example through an HDMI cable. midi controllers have a bunch of names as they are used by a few different proffesions including dj and vj. this means you can basically use any fancy dj box with knobs and faders to control your app. also id recommend looking more into the workflow of a vj because theyre work is very similar to what you are doing here, manipulating live graphics (which are usually also derived from the music being played hence vj). midi controllers can get pricey but from my research "MIDIGrade" offers exactly what you need for a fair price. another options is building your own midi controller if you like electronics. sorry for my broken english if anything is unclear feel free to ask more. also forgot to mention touchdesigner has a builtin feedback loop 'node' that perhaps means the program can virtualize the entire (absolutely amazing) machine you have created. usefull links: www.midigrade.com/ ua-cam.com/video/8qxgQYpHFX8/v-deo.html derivative.ca/ ua-cam.com/users/shortsBIVExpt40jo ua-cam.com/video/xiZ_aWyoJGo/v-deo.html

How's the latency with the wireless receiver? Been debating on these but latency matters a lot to me.
I had originally bought these to use on the cameras looking at the monitors to eliminate the need for HDMI cables, but the latency on these is pretty bad (maybe two seconds?), so they are no good in the feedback loops. They are good, though, for something like this secondary input, where it doesn't matter if the fish movement is two seconds behind reality.
