Pigpen - Solo Acoustic - Family Dog 4/18/70
Katie Mae (Incomplete)
Ain't it Crazy (The Rub) (Fades in)
Roberta
Bring Me My Shotgun
The Mighty Flood
Black Snake
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan
Recorded at the Family Dog concert hall in San Francisco on April 18, 1970
Pig's set is two Lightnin' Hopkins covers, two originals/ad-libs and two John Lee Hooker covers. Given his more limited guitar skills, he stays in the same key and reuses the same couple of riffs for all songs. Setlists for decades included an unidentified "Walk Down the Street". It was later secured that this is Hopkins' Bring Me My Shotgun. But wait. While that song was missed by setlists, note that Pig plays that for a bit, but then he does continue with an original, featuring the "Walk Down the Street" lyrics. He also ad-libs through part of John Lee Hooker's Tupelo Blues (The Flood).

My first year at Uni in London and the first year I was introduced to the Dead. They've been my constant companions ever since.
Love how unhinged this is! 84 is great!
Resting in Aloha, Ioane! We miss you.
Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo!!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Try 1969, not 70
I can’t believe they brought all that shit to Europe.
Rock Scully said Pig was in his most natural state with a guitar and some Southern Comfort.
I believe that’s the first time I’ve heard the J-Man playing slide on Scarlet Begonias. Wonder if he did that more than once.
Everyone wants to be Jake Shimabaura.
Saw the concert at Ally Pally. By the nature of such things I don’t remember much about the day.
Can Josh sing by himself
My First show! The balls on the guy sneaking a relatively giant camera into the greek. Thx for doing it!
Early 70s, my fave Dead era. They were on fire these days.
Best 30 minutes of concert I've listened to in a long time!
100%. Not listening and most importantly, hearing this… is to not understand the beginning, the genesis of the Grateful Dead. Pigpen was the Grateful Dead. Don’t you ever forget that! @bryanswagerty
Just happened to stumble on this EXACTLY 54 years later. Gold
Pig should have been the deads opening act every show.. better yet, the dead should have been his opening act.
Pigpen was the shit
Absolutely beautiful! Hula is amazing 🎉
I didn't know they took the Wall Of Sound to Europe. It must have cost an absolute fortune in shipping costs. I know The Who would ship their own custom sound and lights to America in the 1970's and it almost bankrupted them. Like The Dead, The Who never sold that many albums. But unlike The Dead, after Tommy, The Who didn't tour that much. Where they found the money, who knows.
Rest in peace sir.
much love and light Ron Mckernan...you and Janice were a hoot..
Crazy how much weight Pig Pen lost as his health started going downhill .
Friday night- stars were bright illuminating the wall At Watkins Glenn. Beautiful music floating- then: THUNDER; Phils Megatron bass. Wharf rat appears and shakes the earth. What a Night. ❤
If you love your life, thank Betty Cantor Jackson
So awesome! Thank you!
I was in Hawaii with family and friends in the middle and late 90s. Heard and loved this song. Must have been new cos no one knew it. Was all on the radio. Was told it was Ernie Cruz junior, when I saw John in the world wide version of The Weight I had to look it up and find the connection. Here it is.
Lovin' a little Ron McKernan ⚡️P I G P E N ⚡️

I drank hard liquor every night till early in the morning in my twenties. And I’m fine. How much freaking drinking do you have do to get sirrosis of the liver and die at 27. Smh😢
That does seem crazy. Maybe another factor, another toxin. Or maybe people are just different.
Probably something else going on to,combined with the liquor it ain’t always booze that gets your liver.
He had genetic liver issues. That with heavy drinking is what hurt him.
Woah, is there like a whole crowd control drama happening in the background and being signaled and handled by all... while they play without missing a beat, and in fact they alter the playing to cover the commotion?????? Or did I imagine that?????? Can you imagine having that much skill!
This is great, except for the f’n commercials that hit like train wreck . Damn that hurts!😢
Get UA-cam premium. I share my daughters.
That’s not the point. No one should be making money of this music except the musicians and/or the producers.
Never knew this existed

This is exactly what I wanted to watch! After this life, I want to reincarnate into the Wall of Sound
Hippies with guns I love it
yes. somewhere out in cyberspace is the vid of the Hells Angels layin Pig to rest. dont know how the dead took that, and dont care. RIP Pigpen
Thank you for an excellent collection of McKernan Blues.
This set was fire
The guitar work on the opening track is just stupendous. It is truly glorious and there are so many Sublime aspects to it. It's pure Magic
Beautiful
Beautiful. Great Photos!
The song at 14:00... I was just listening to the wake of the flood podcast about the vanport flood in 48. Hunter lived there with his mom after his dad left them. He and a friend had a rowboat they would go adventure in and when the floods came they went out trying to save people and livestock. Row Jimmy anyone? Here comes sunshine... The whole album is about the story. Neat pigpen picked up the story and made a song.
IAORANA maururu
My favorite member of the Dead. May he RIP.
Nice❤❤❤
I love that photo o of Bob Dylan holding the Pigpen sign.
Heard the wall of sound at least 3 times and some of it at Watkins Glen Summer jam. It is still the best live audio system that I have ever heard. It was sublime...
I took my future wife to her first show/3 day run of shows at the Geek this weekend. 18 years later, I run into my now ex-wife at the Geek for Phil and Phriends. I guess I shouldn't have shown her so much, so fast. The Geek in Bezerkeley will always be a special place for me. Take a big deep breath of that eucalyptus and redwood. Only two venues smell like that, Geek and Frost. My home outdoor venues.
The best descriptions always include the smells, the greek definitely had the eucalyptus. Redwoods, sequoias in general need heat and moisture for the full nose bloom.
